One night on SEN Mark Fine asked listeners to ring in & talk about the cricket bats they used.

It was riveting listening to people talk about the bats they had as kids & which test cricketers used which bats.

Remember Viv with his SS jumbo, or Lance Cairns with his shoulderless bat, I think it was called an excalaber?

As a kids my first bat was a Stuart Surridge. I had to oil it & 'knock it in' before using it. After a couple of years it started to crack so I had it coated with pigskin. That was fun seeing the cherries appear on it as you tonked a new ball.

My first bat was a Slazenger with the black Puma sticker on the back.

I had a G & M Diamond that was so heavy I couldn't play any horizontal bat shots, but man, anything I did manage to hit went like the proverbial...

I also had a David Hookes double scoop at one stage there.

My first name brand bat as a kid, was a Dean Jones Supreme. I've still got it, although it has seen better years.

I had a SS Junior Jumbo, then when the twin scoops were in fashion I had the GN Hurricane Dynadrive.

In my latter years as a cricketer when I discovered I couldn't bat I just borrowed one, my favourite the was a mate's Maddock's Sports Heritage. The bat maker for Maddock's back then was local bat maker Lachlan Fisher and it was a damn fine bat.

A lot of guys are playing with Fisher bats that are made in Gelong rd just down the road from the footy ground. Adam Gilchrist uses one despite the fact he's got a sponsorship deal with someone else. They just brand the fisher bats with whoever is sponsoring him.




Bought a bat called Rocky by a Pakisani company called Ihsan a few years ago. Very big, with a massive sweet spot but as light as a feather. It was a great bat but that's what all my teammates decided too and the bloody thing wore out quick smart.


I gave a puma bat now that looks, feels and plays exactly the way slazenger used to feel. It's a pretty good blade, nice bendy thin handle, good height-I like it.

Do you remember the Crochet bats that were made in Spotwood? I think Ray bright had something to do with them. Every club kit in Melbourne included at least one because they were really cheap, they were also really crap.

They made thim in a little factorette in Hudson Rd.

I didn't play outdoor cricket for a few seasons as I was busy with some other sports.
For indoor cricket I used a Kookaburra which was a terrific light weight bat but then I purchased an SP bat without the shoulders like Lance Cairns used which was a great indoor bat.

When I stared playing outdoor cricket I had great success with a GM Maestro.

The Kahuna from Kookaburra is the best bat going around at the moment IMO. Anything that costs you a fair bit is pretty much guaranteed to be a good bat these days. You get what you pay for I have found. Their is a shop in Footscray/Yarraville that custom makes bats for you. Pretty sure its on Willy road and I think they are called Fishers. Used my mates a few times and they are a good bat. They will give you the meat of the bat where you want it.
