Cameron White - Could he play test cricket?

We have been searching for an all-rounder for a number of years and I have given up on thinking we will every unearth a Flintoff type.
I actually think the all-rounders position is somewhat overrated mainly due to Australia success for so long with out one but I do think we need someone capable of bowling a few overs tightly.
White is an excellent batter and is a more than capable slips fieldsman and while his bowling isn't great, he does bowl tightly and and could be handy on a 4th or 5th day.

Does anyone give him a chance of getting into the side as a number 6?

He'll need a lot more penetration with his bowling. Good batsmen and a brilliant fielder though.

Wouldn't his batting and fielding be enough though? His bowling is never going to return 4 wickets in a test let alone an innings but a 10 over none/one for 30 return might be just what we need. On some tracks a 2nd slow bowler might be handy.

His other barrier to selection is that he plays for Victoria. He'd be captain by now if he came from NSW.

Kumble out thinks some batsman which currently White cannot plus he bowls very tightly which pressures them into making mistakes. If White can become a bowler that gets a wicket every now and then and bowls tightly then he becomes a viable option with the ball. At moment he wouldn't scare any batsman.

White needs to make it as a batsmen who bowls a bit. I had never really seen much of him live and was having trouble figuring out whether he was test material with the bat until last season. I lived on punt road straight across the road from the MCG for 3 months last summer and walked over to watch White bat against Tassy. We lost 2 early ones and it was about 2/50 and the Tassy guys were right into him. He didn't score off his first 34 balls with Hilfy and co getting right into him. I thought he was going to crack but he worked through it and went on to make a 150 in good time. Once he got going he looked fantastic. After seeing that I certainly think he has what it takes to make it as a batsmen for Australia.

The fact that he can bowl those skidding leggies and is one of the best slips fielders in the country are a bonus. Batting at number 7 in the one day team did nothing for him though. Makes him look like a slogger.

I can't imagine there's anyone who bats above 8 in a test side who'd be scared of his leggies, which seem to only be mysterious in the fact that they never seem to turn much. If his batting improves a bit more, that and his fielding are more likely to grab him a spot. Probably a few guys ahead of him for a batting spot though.

There is no way he is ever going to land a spot as a bowler but he does have the potential to bat at 6 and bowl a few overs when required.

I was reading the Australian cricket list of injuries at the moment and with Hussey not likely to be available for 6 weeks we might just need to have someone to bat at 5 or 6 for Australia.
