We have seen the AFL poorly handle the issue of ‘alternative’ strips in my view. To be honest I reckon they are terrified of Eddie & by extension, Collingwood & to a lesser degree Essendon.
The whole idea of a ‘clash’ strip in the AFL was to avoid just that, a clash of colours. So how do Collingwood get away with a clash jumper that goes from black & white stripes to white & black stripes? Seeing as I’m talking about colours, perhaps we should use one to describe the AFL on this issue, YELLOW!
To a lesser extent we still have problems in the NRL where sides have 2 strips, a home one & an away one. It seems sill when a team’s away strip closely resembles some parts of their opponent’s home strip. I’ll give you an example. Brisbane Bronco’s played Melbourne Storm. Melbourne’s shorts & socks are navy blue. Brisbane’s away shorts & socks are also navy blue. From a viewing perspective it was difficult at times & could have easily been avoided if they had worn their maroon strip,
The A League also has the same policy as the NRL where teams play in a home & an away strip. This annoys me when Melbourne wears their grey away strip against Sydney, whose home strip is pale blue.
For years in Europe we have been accustomed to seeing all the soccer teams wear different coloured shirts to avoid a clash. It has become so ingrained that I don’t really notice it.
As a follower of Liverpool it’s nice to see them wear their all red strip, but if they play away to Arsenal or Manyoo, I expect as a matter of course that I’ll see them wearing something different, be it black, green & white, yellow or as it was one season, ecru!
It doesn’t really concern me at all when I’m watching, as long as I can tell the difference between the 2 teams.
