Brilliant innings. He's a class cricketer but not one that ever made the most of his opportunities in the test arena.

The ultimate flat track bully.
In a tough situation couldn't make a run to save his life. When things are easy, though, look out!

Perception is an amazing thing. I actually find him to be a cricketer with a hard edge to his game and have a fair bit of time for him. He is a little unorthodox but has been unlucky at times in the past. Might be just off the pace in terms of test level quality.

I heard a guy on SEN mention that Katich is an eye batsman. I hadn't really heard that expression used the way he did but it was interesting to hear him speak. Katich is just short of test standard but is a very solid player.

'Batter'-has great hand/eye co-ordination and the shots to match to match it. The naturally talented bastard that we all want to be like. Prime example is Mark Waugh
'Batsman'-has endless supplies of guts, patience and determination. Helpful if he can hit the ball of the square. Prime example is Steve Waugh.
You need both types in your batting line up and the best batsman can play both styles (prime example is Ricky Ponting) but if the selectors are faced with a choice they'll go for the safe pair of hands every time. That's why Katich missses out. Bit of a liability in the field too, compared to the other ten blokes, which kills his chances.
