Actually had a bit of a 'pep' talk from Merv about halfway through this season. Our coach had played junior football with him, so they went back a little bit. Anyhow, there was some interesting points he raised. One of them was being resilient; told us of a few stories how people at a football club told him to blatantly piss off, and told us about how he'd deal with people like that. He also made mention of not touching alcohol for two whole years at a point in his career, which was fairly incredible considering his well known reputation as a 'beer lover'.

Made numerous other points, but he's quite an interesting man to listen to. He's got some good stories to tell and plenty of helpful advice. And as most of you know, he's huge to stand against. I didn't think he was as big as he actually is.

Not sure if this is relevant to the cause, but thought I'd share it with you all.

Merv was a decent footballer from all accounts and I think he has a very good sporting mind. Whilst he never appeard to be match fit with his cricket the captian knew he could give him the ball anytime and he would bowl his heart out. Merv might have been aided by having some great bowlers at the other end but he was a good fast bowler in his own rights.
