View Full Version : Australia - Are they as good as the papers are saying?

I though Sri Lanka's effort in the test was lackluster and down on expectations but I'm surprised to see so many articles saying how good the Aussies are.
Was it that great of a victory all things considered? It was a comprehensive victory and very business like but I'm not sure that we won't have our share of ups and down over the summer either.

The Aussies are an exceptional cricket team, but I think it has more to do with everyone else being hopeless. Some of the batting from the Sri Lankans was just school boy stuff. Very average.

Sri Lanka are a team that play there best cricket on the sub-continent or against teams who play spin poorly.
There fast bowling lacks penetration, Vaas has ssen a good servant, but is hardly a danger. Murali has a great record, but has struggled in the past against us.
There batting is suspect. The openers are past there best and without Sangakarra who is world class they rely heavily on M. Jarwadene. Silva looked ok and looks to have a good future.
India will give a much better account mainly as there batting is so strong. Our suspect bowling line-up will have its work cut out, but if it can do the job against the Indians then you would think that the future looks bright. In saying that our batting is still very strong and I can't really see the Indians having the potency to take 20 wickets against us.

I think this Aussie team is overrated - hopefully the Indians will have their house in order and be ready to test them

I tend to agree because the Sri Lankan team is very average at the moment. I can't wait until the Indians get here to really test us.

Having a think about the cricket state of world cricket I would say even with the current bowling line-up we are still along way in front of every other team.
Our batting is far superior to any other team, perhaps India may give us a run for there money, but they are a bit hit and miss. I suppose we will learn a more about them in the coming months, but in comparison to all other sides our depth is far superior. If we don't make 400 in the 1st innings of a test match it is a massive surprise and if you can do this you don't get beaten to often.
Our bowling when compared to the other strong teams still stacks up ok. Sth. Africa have Steyn, Nel and Ntini who are honest toilers, Ntini is ranked highly in world rankings, but never seems to worry us. England never have the same bowlers on the park, when they do they are a danger, but it rarely happens. From the rest I would say NZ have a good bowling attack fronted by Bond and Vettori, but I would think that a full strength Australian state team would have a better batting line-up.
All in all I would say that we will continue to say Australia continue to dominate while the batsman continue to rack up big numbers thus giving the bowlers confidence to attack the opposition without the threat of being behind the 8-ball.

India are really going to test us. Three decent quicks and 2 very good spinners will trouble us. Harbajan actually is a bigger danger to us that Murali in my opinion.
Lets wait to see if we are as good as the media seems to think we are.

The great West Indian were fantastic, but IIRC there was a time when Aust was poor and the English average, so therefore hard to really rate their greatness.
