STAR Western Bulldogs recruit Jason Akermanis appears to be having trouble finding his feet.

The former Brisbane Lion has spent the past two months training with the Bulldogs but admitted he was frustrated at the time it was taking to adapt to his new teammates' styles.

"There's a bit more education from my end to go," Akermanis said.

"While the preparation has been great, I've just got to know how I can help blokes like Brad Johnson and get in the right spots instead of just getting in the way."

Skipper Johnson is confident Akermanis will find his place after a few practice matches.

"It's certainly going to take a few games for Aker to understand the way we play," he said.

Akermanis's pre-season preparation was marred by a mysterious virus during Christmas.

Dehydration and an intensive training regimen contributed to the illness, which laid him off for four days.

"It was pretty scary," Akermanis said. "I just woke up one day with no sight in one eye and no feeling in my fingers."

Akermanis said his bodyweight had returned to the 77kg it was before the virus ? 5kg below last year's playing weight ? and he was eager to start the season.

Ruckman Luke Darcy is expected to return from his latest major knee injury for the NAB Cup game against Sydney in Canberra on February 24.

Absolutely.

It'll take Aker a few games to understand our methods, basically as Johnson said. I don't think he should find it too much trouble though, as his natural game fits in perfect with our structure.
