Teams level on points are separated by:

1) The results of games between the teams in the tie (if tied, by goal difference and then by away goals counting double).

2) Goal difference in all group games.

3) Highest number of goals scored in all games.

4) Highest Uefa ranking over the previous five seasons.

UEFA Champions League : Group A Table

P W D L F A GD PTS
1 FC Porto 5 2 2 1 6 7 -1 8
2 Marseille 5 2 1 2 6 5 1 7
3 Liverpool 5 2 1 2 14 5 9 7
4 Besiktas 5 2 0 3 4 13 -9 6

Put simply, if Liverpool beat Marseille in their final group game then they will definitely go through. If they lose they will definitely go out. Complications arise should Liverpool and Marseille draw. Marseille beat Liverpool at Anfield earlier in the campaign, meaning they would edge the Reds out on the basis of that result, assuming Porto beat or draw with Besiktas in the group's other match.

But if Liverpool and Marseille draw and Besiktas pull off a shock by beating Porto, the Reds would go through. In this scenario, Liverpool, Marseille and Porto would all be on eight points. Liverpool would go through with the best goal difference in the head-to-head matches between the three teams.

UEFA Champions League : Group B Table

P W D L F A GD PTS
1 Chelsea 5 3 2 0 9 2 7 11
2 Rosenborg 5 2 1 2 5 7 -2 7
3 Schalke 04 5 1 2 2 2 3 -1 5
4 Valencia 5 1 1 3 2 6 -4 4

Chelsea are definitely through as group winners, regardless of the result of their final match against a Valencia side who cannot progress. A home win against Rosenborg will be enough for Schalke to join the Blues in the last 16, but the Norwegian side would go through with a point away from home.

UEFA Champions League : Group C Table

P W D L F A GD PTS
1 Real Madrid 5 2 2 1 10 8 2 8
2 Olympiakos 5 2 2 1 8 7 1 8
3 Werder Bremen 5 2 0 3 8 10 -2 6
4 Lazio 5 1 2 2 7 8 -1 5

All four teams can still qualify but Real Madrid and Olympiakos will be favourites as they are at home to the bottom two teams in the last matches and a draw would be enough for either to qualify. Bremen will qualify only if they win at Olympiakos. Lazio will be sure of qualification if they win in Madrid but Bremen do not win in Greece. If Bremen do win in Greece, Lazio would have to win by at least two goals in Madrid to go through.

UEFA Champions League : Group D Table

P W D L F A GD PTS
1 AC Milan 5 3 1 1 11 5 6 10
2 Celtic 5 3 0 2 5 5 0 9
3 Shakhtar Donetsk 5 2 0 3 5 9 -4 6
4 Benfica 5 1 1 3 3 5 -2 4

AC Milan have sealed their place in the last 16 and a draw at home to Celtic in the last game will take them through in first place. A draw would also take Celtic through, but if the Scots lose in Milan, they will miss out on the knockout stages if Shakhtar beat Benfica at home.

That would leave Celtic and Shakhtar on nine points, but the Ukrainians would go through on head-to-head having beaten Celtic 2-0 at home and lost only 2-1 at Parkhead. Celtic will top the group if they win in the San Siro.

UEFA Champions League : Group E Table

P W D L F A GD PTS
1 Barcelona 5 3 2 0 9 2 7 11
2 Rangers 5 2 1 2 7 6 1 7
3 Lyon 5 2 1 2 8 10 -2 7
4 VfB Stuttgart 5 1 0 4 6 12 -6 3

Barcelona will go through as group winners, and Rangers will join them in the last 16 if they draw or beat Lyon at home in the final group match. Rangers won 3-0 in Lyon earlier in the competition so a draw at Ibrox would put them through thanks to a better head-to-head record against the French team.

UEFA Champions League : Group F Table

P W D L F A GD PTS
1 Man Utd 5 5 0 0 12 3 9 15
2 Roma 5 3 1 1 10 5 5 10
3 Sporting 5 1 1 3 6 8 -2 4
4 Dynamo Kiev 5 0 0 5 4 16 -12 0

Manchester United have taken first place in the group and Roma have secured the second spot.

UEFA Champions League : Group G Table

P W D L F A GD PTS
1 Inter Milan 5 4 0 1 11 4 7 12
2 Fenerbahce 5 2 2 1 5 5 0 8
3 PSV 5 2 1 2 3 5 -2 7
4 CSKA Moscow 5 0 1 4 6 11 -5 1

Inter Milan have clinched top spot in the group and Fenerbahce are favourites to go through with them. PSV must beat Inter at home and hope Fenerbahce fail to beat bottom-of-the-table CSKA in Turkey to take the second place.

UEFA Champions League : Group H Table

P W D L F A GD PTS
1 Sevilla 5 4 0 1 11 7 4 12
2 Arsenal 5 3 1 1 12 3 9 10
3 Slavia Prague 5 1 2 2 5 13 -8 5
4 Steaua Bucharest 5 0 1 4 3 8 -5 1

Arsenal and Sevilla have both qualified for the last 16, with Slavia Prague taking a place in the Uefa Cup. Arsenal will finish top of the group if they beat Steaua Bucharest at home and Sevilla fail to win in Prague in the last group games.

* Those teams in bold have already qualified.

Ties to be played 11/12 December.

Poor, poor day for Madrid.
If they can't get a point at home against Lazio they shouldn't go through.

Watched the Liverpool v Porto game on SBS.
Really enjoyed Finnan's game and Gerrard is worth his weight. Benayoun (?spelling)
was good early too.
Porto looked ok at times, although Torres first goal was due to bad marking from a corner, and how do you leave Crouch unmarked in the box from a corner for the fourth? Although that was down to some awful keeping too. Keeper looked scared of the big galoot heading toward him.
Be an interesting game at Marseille.

Anyone know why Group D was played today, a week before the rest?

Good result for Celtic but as usual they'll get beaten by a better team in the next round over 2 legs, I'm sure.

No idea sorry, often occurs with Inter & AC Milan both sharing a stadium should they both be drawn to play at home (usually occurs more in the knockout stages), but Milan are away at PSV so I am clueless.

Here is a first.

Surely there is some website or reference material you can check up on to find an answer. This response just doesn't cut the mustard.

Nah nah na na nah!

The Matchday six games in Group D of UEFA Champions League – Europe’s biggest and most prestigious football tournament – have been brought forward by a week because European champions AC Milan jet off to the Club World Cup in Japan following the match.

Liverpool were very good, thought Kewell was impressive and has added the left sided player they need.

Congratulations TCD, Liverpool came back from the dead and got through.
Only saw the first 10 minutes but that was almost game over anyway. Felt bad for the Marseille keeper, great save from the penalty but it just bounced straight back to Gerrard.
Oh yeah and the Marseille jersey was awful, fluoro Orangey/Pink. Bleugh.

Real got through on top of the group too, although I'm not super confident about their chances of winning it. Still leaky down back. Alla Madrid.

Thanks TU, at least Madrid won their group, which should help on 2 counts. Next opponent will come from one of the eight 2nd placed teams ( well, may not be much easier) & return leg is at home. Decided advantage if you need the crowd influence.
