Bulldogs on top
Footscray Edgewater has shot to the top of the ladder with a big win over the Cats, going past the Blues who went down to Melbourne Uni in a tense match at Princes Park. Pacemen John Hastings and Grant Lindsay, against his old side, were the stars for the Bulldogs today, while Richmond's English import Neil Edwards scored today's only first innings hundred.
Declaring at its overnight 6/339, the Bulldogs bowled out the strong Geelong batting line-up for just 137. Apart from Aaron Finch (44), the Cats crumbled to John Hastings (4/39) and Grant Lindsay (5/58). Following on, Geelong was 1/116 in its second innings, with Aaron Finch (57no) taking his season tally to 681, when the early stumps was called.
In a fascinating match at Windy Hill, Essendon (134 & 161) turned a first innings advantage into an outright web_blizzardloss to Ringwood (93 & 2/203). Set 203 off 59 overs for the outright, the Rams were guided home by Tom Stray (63no) and David King (57). The win has lifted Ringwood to fifth spot on the ladder.
Carlton has dropped to third on the ladder after going down to the Students. The Blues fought hard to defend its moderate 203, but Melbourne Uni, guided by a solid Alex Cairns (91no), just got across the line and finished with 227. Skipper Tim Welsford (5/34) was outstanding with the ball for the Blues.
At Central Reserve, Melbourne (310) easily knocked over Prahran (121), with extras (28) top-scoring. Paceman Mick Lewis (4/33) and spinner Sean Sturrock (4/18) did the damage. The Demons were 2/164 in their second innings at the close, with Andrew Kent (103) enjoying some useful batting practice, scoring his seventh Premier century.
In other matches, Camberwell Magpies (334 - Matthew Wade 55, Aaron Maynard 50, James Pearson 57, Peter Manser 5/111) defeated North Melbourne (262), Richmond (4/240 dec - Neil Edwards 115, Aiden Blizzard 78) thumped Northcote (145 & 4/95), Hawthorn-Monash Uni (9/369 dec - Ben Cookson 68, Darren Dewar 48no) held off a brave Casey-South Melbourne (348 - Chris Benham 69, Tim Dale 53, Clive Rose 70, Craig Entwistle 81), St Kilda (8/302 - Michael Klinger 65, Ryan Heywood 72. Andrew McGuinness 51) beat Frankston Peninsula 191 and Dandenong (369 & 4/125 - Brett Forsyth 54) had too many for Fitzroy Doncaster (186 - Lloyd Mash 85, David Newman 4/50).
