The Australia opening batsman Matthew Hayden is in doubt for the third Test against India in Perth after injuring his right thigh in Sydney. Alex Kountouris, the team physiotherapist, revealed that it could take Hayden up to five weeks to recover although he wouldn't rule out him playing the next match.
Hayden picked up the injury while turning for a run during his 123 in the second innings, prompting him to call for a runner, and he didn't take the field during India's reply. Hayden is set to return home to Brisbane for three days before starting his rehabilitation program.
"It could take one week to heal, it could take five weeks," Kountouris told the Courier Mail. "We are waiting to see how it looks in a few days. He is a chance to play in Perth but we are waiting to see."
Brad Hogg, the wrist spinner, is also in doubt for the Perth Test after sustaining a finger injury while fielding in Sydney. Scans did not reveal a fracture and Hogg is most likely to be replaced by Shaun Tait should Australia opt for four-pronged pace attack.
Chris Rogers, the Western Australia opening batsman, is a strong candidate to replace Hayden after scoring 362 runs in five Pura Cup matches this season. He and Phil Jaques were vying for the opener's spot but an untimely appendix problem ruled Rogers out of contention for the Sri Lanka series in November. Simon Katich, who is seeking a comeback, is another contender as he currently tops the Pura Cup table with 878 runs in six games.
The Perth Test is set to get underway on January 16, but the tour is in the balance after the Indian board complained against Harbhajan Singh's three-Test ban for racial abuse. India were also upset with the umpiring in Sydney and Steve Bucknor has been replaced for the game at the WACA.

Has Rogers done enough sincew his injury to warrant his selection at the top of the order? Does him being a local boy put him in front?
Would the selectors consider Hodge or Katich?

Katich yes Hodge no. Rogers possibly.
Maybe Dighton could be an outside shot but i would reckon Hussey would be moved up and then either Katich or D.Hussey with Noffke and Pomersbach a chance.
I'm a vic but at 33 Hodge is too old

Katich no. Had a number of chances already and failed while others don't get 1 chance.
Hussey yes.
Who is a good slipper from these players?

Katich? It seems all you need to be the next big thing in Australian cricket these days is to be from NSW. There are plenty who rave about him but in all honesty he never impressed me all that much.

I personally don't like him, yet he has dominated this year more than any other batsmen in the domestic comp.
Don't think i want to see him as I agree with Ernie that he had his chances but i believe he may be given one more shot if he is lucky.

I don't mind the idea of potentially using Katich, Hodge or Rogers as a one off but really this could be the ideal time to look towards the 3rd opener that we take on tours so I think Rogers probably should be tried.
He's a decent fieldsmen isn't he? or an I confusing him with Voges.
I wouldn't move Hussey to the top of the order. Why mess around with the conerstone of our middle order.

Dominated the domestic comp? Jamie Siddons did that for a good decade and look how far it got him.
Mike Hussey was making runs in the domestic comp for years but only recently got a chance. The selectors have egg on their face there IMO.
Katich has had his chances and hasn't made the most of them. With so many players in the test team nearing retirement age this is not a time for handing out "second chances".

I only know that Siddons is Australian. He is from before when i started watching cricket. And when i say Katich is dominating, i mean that he has been about 200 runs ahead of the nearest batsman for just about the entire time. And he has less innings than the rest of the top 4
Katich 878 runs 109.75
Noffke 604 runs 54.90
D.Hussey 563 runs 70.37
MJ Di Venuto 517 47.00
LA Pomersbach 488 97.60 (he has missed matches through team suspension)
If you think we need a younger player than name one. Pomersbach is the standout but he is only 23 and this is his real breakout year on the domestic scene so he may not be ready. Marsh might be one but the selectors haven't shown much interest in him.
We would only use this player for one match remember.

I think Rogers deserves his chance. Been the best opener in domestic cricket for half a decade. Wouldn't shock me if they brought in Voges and prmoted Hussey to opening. The selectors dont mind ignoring form or performances if they have an eye to the future or really like a player. Katich would also do a good job. Had one bad series in England when their bowlers were throwing down stinger missiles.

Really?
Matthew Hayden turns 37 this year, how much longer are we expecting him to play?
The selectors would be guilty of short sightedness if they didn't use this as a chance to plan for the future.
And here's a free History lesson for you on Jamie Siddons:
http://www.cricket.com.au/default.aspx?s=managementmens (http://http://www.cricket.com.au/default.aspx?s=managementmens)
"Played 160 first-class matches for Victoria and South Australia between 1984-85 and 1999-00 as a talented right-hand batsman, and his career runs in domestic first-class cricket (10,643) was for a time an Australian record."

Fair point on Hayden but even Rogers is 30 (2 years younger than Katich). Would he be a suitable player for the future in your eyes? If not then who should they pick?
Siddons sounds like he could have done well in Tests if he ever had the chance

Disagree that Katich had only 1 bad series.
Katich came back from England still in the test side and was dropped after poor performances in Australia.
This will be his 3rd chance in the side as well.

With Rogers being on standby the selectors have played their hand for any future tours.

The thing that works in Rogers favour is that he hasn't been playing the full international test schedules that the national squad would do, and as such IMO the body and mind would be in shape for a slightly longer international career. He could easily play 5-7 years of test cricket, whereas Hayden probably has one, maybe 2 more international seasons left in him. As I've stated, I don't believe Katich has made the most of the opportunities that he's already had, and as such shouldn't be as high in test considerations. I would apply the same logic to Stuart Clark who had to wait quite a while for a shot at the National team, whereas someone like Mitch Johnson, who has started his test/ODI career slightly earlier, may not play to the same age as Stuart Clark might.
Glad we're on the same page on Siddons. He's generally regarded as one of the best Australian players never to play test cricket.

And boy could he play. I think he went on a tour to Pakistan but still never landed a test.

Its a massive compliment to his contemporaries that he couldn't displace them from the team. He was a wonderful cricketer.

Not really. If he was from NSW he would just about have to commit murder to be out of the national team.
Mark Waugh was a good player but got more chances to prove himself than Katich.

Yeah, but the likes of McGrath, Lee, Bracken, Clarke, Clark, Haddin and Jaques wouldn't exactly be out of place in any other national team. But how the Clark(e)'s got into the team is a bit dodgy.
It seems like NSW WA and QLD make up nearly all of every squad except for Ponting and when Tait, White or Hodge is selected.
I think the dominance of these states in the national side is more than just favoritism. Tassie has often been bad but they have a few very good young players coming through while SA needs to get Cosgrove fit, wait on the Cullens and hope for Tait.
Victoria however doesn't seem to have many hopeful players. Hussey has come on late Hodge is unlucky (i do understand why they dropped him, however strange their replacement was) and if White could have kept on improving his bowling he would be in.
Most of the bowlers seem to be just over the age where they could make a test debut but at least we poached Wade who will compete with Ronchi for the gloves in the national side in due time

Who was the last NSW player to have been a top state player but miss out on test cricket like Siddons?
No, I can't think of one, either.
NSW players will always be given every chance. Then it's up to them to take it.
Sliding doors. Siddons get's a chance, makes a score and forces the selectors to drop someone else, Siddons goes on to play 50 tests.

Thats very true but also guys like Elliott didn't grasp their chance or chances when they were given a shot. Stuart Law scored a mountain of runs for Queensland and only ever got one chance mind you I think the selectors got that right but it's hard to say if the likes of Law and Siddons would have still missed out if they had played for NSW.
