The Blues are a basket case in a similar state to the old Fitzroy according to their recently resigned Finance Director. The club of Prime Ministers and Mercedes owners is broke and the board is dysfunctional.
Here we are at the Western Bulldogs about to announce the most significant investment in our history and one which will set the club up for the nest 25 years. On field the potential is unlimited

The irony has not been lost on me but until we start posting profits ourselves we are not out of the woods. Part of me takes no pleasure in what is happening at the Blues but a part of me remembers the 'Tragic' comment that John Elliott threw our way.
It shows how the once mighty can slip back so far if there is internal bickering and people putting their own agendas ahead of the clubs interest.

Why is their chairman called Smorgon and their (now ex-) financial director called Rose?
Why are they suddenly redevloping their ground as a community hub with a child care centre?
Really, I think this little clubs should get their own ideas. They can't just expect to copy everything we do and be successful.

We might have got the wrong Rawlings and Bowden, but boy, we sure got the right Smorgan and Rose.

I don't have a problem with the AFL bailing out Carlton but I want to see them cop the same conditions that we got.
They should be selling games, cutting expenses and have to get their business plan approved by the AFL like we had to.
The funds that the AFL have provided to us (which they now admit did not even cover the cost to us of things like scheduling, unfavorable draws, ground deals etc) have cost us wins (in all likelihood, from selling games interstate), Nathan Brown (from forcing us into pay cuts) and Spida Everitt.
I understand that a year or two before Spida went to Hawthorn we had convinced him to come to us, and we had enough room in our salary cap to accommondate him. It was the year of the first CBF payout and the AFL thought it would look bad if they gave us a payout and we spent it on a high profile recruit. The AFL stopped it by insisting on the "track down to 92.5%" rule.

Totally agree. I wonder if the AFL has the will to do it though?
