BUILDING work on the Whitten Oval redevelopment will start in about four weeks.

At last: Campbell Rose and Dogs skipper Brad Johnson welcome the OK for the Whitten Oval redevelopment.
The Bulldogs finally gained planning approval on Thursday, more than six months after receiving a town planning permit from Maribyrnong City Council.

The significant breakthrough with the council was celebrated by the entire playing list, administrative staff and board members at Whitten Oval yesterday.

Originally, the Dogs had hoped to start work in November.

"Normally it takes four to six weeks to get plans stamped and endorsed, but it took six months," Bulldogs chief executive Campbell Rose said. "It was frustrating for us at times, but we understand the needs of council. We had to meet particular requirements. It is a big development, which we have to get right."

The value of the project was initially listed at $19.5 million, but it will now cost about $25 million.

Rose said the added cost related to a community indoor sports complex, which will be built in stage two of the project.

The Dogs need to raise about $6 million to complete the redevelopment, but Rose said the club had exciting developments in the pipeline.

The Bulldogs secured $8 million in Federal Government funding to kick-start the project in 2004.

How will the club make money out of this?

I remember reading a small list of the benefits but I have forgotten them now.

I suppose it's the better facilities which cut maintenance costs for a long time plus being able off people a 1st class venue will drive a number of benefits.

It also give the people at the club a proper work environment which is sadly in a poor state.

Other than that I can't think of what the original benefits were.

Where are they going to find $6 million? I think they better start talking to the state Gov.

DR, there will be rental space that I believe Vic Uni, plus other groups, have agreed or has shown interest in leasing.

As regards the money we are raising, about a year ago I heard the head of the Bulldogs Forever Foundation or what ever it is called saying they had pledges for a large part of it. It is rumoured that Sue Alimberti has tipped in $1m on her own.

The more interesting issue for me is why it has taken so long. It suggests all is not well with relationships with the council.

I hope glimmerings of success have not gone to our head.

On another matter I'm going to start putting up the blog; Remembering the Western Oval; white man dreaming

It doesn't mean the relationship with the council is strained at all, they're tipping in a few mil as well remember. More likely a few residents have kicked up a stink.

I went to one of the original meetings where they first showed off the plans. There were about 3 Bulldogs supporters there and about 20 residents trying to find out what they could complain about.

Fair dinkum, one woman had a whinge about the club turning the paddock behind the Barkly St goals into a park because that was where she walked her dog. Cam Rose told her she could still walk her dog there and she would have trees, paths and nice grass.

The woman said, "Oh great. There will probably be people everywhere".

Some people just like to whinge.

Theres plenty of desolate, barren places that no-one in there right mind would go anywhere near in the immediate vicinity of Whitten Oval. I'd be more than happy to point them out to her.

The indoor sports centre is a great idea. It will enable the club to possibly run things like indoor cricket and netball, and other revenue raising ventures.

And it can be used an indoor training facilty. Seems to be the way of the future for coaches who want to practice tactics and game styles away from prying eyes.

Collingwood and hawthorn have one now and it wont be long before it's the accepted thing.

To quote Bobby Davis, "that is fairdinkumunbelieveable!"

If she wants to have a spot where she can walk her dog then go out and buy a block of land somewhere, or move out to the country. If you don't own it, don't complain when someone improves it or opens it up for others

What you say is true up to a point. My info is that there are noses out of joint over it and this showed up in some of the detail of that was requested in amendments etc.
