New Bulldog Jason Akermanis will miss the match against his old team, the Brisbane Lions, after injuring his hamstring in last weekend's game against Sydney.
THE captivating theatre that Jason Akermanis' first match against the Brisbane Lions is certain to be will no longer be staged this Friday night.
The Western Bulldogs will announce today that the former Lion is one of three stars who have been withdrawn from their second-round NAB Cup match, against the Queenslanders at Telstra Dome.
Akermanis, Ryan Griffen and Brad Johnson will all miss the match after being hurt in the team's first-round victory over Sydney at Manuka Oval last Saturday, with Akermanis in doubt for the following week as well after a scan yesterday discovered a hamstring tendon problem that may require a fortnight of rest.
What was going to be the most compelling encounter of the second round of pre-season matches instead will serve little more than its experimental purpose — not only because of Akermanis' absence but also that of Jonathan Brown, the Lions' superstar forward who played in three premierships and four grand finals with Aka but who has scarcely disguised his dislike for his former teammate.
The Dogs and Lions will next meet in the season proper in round 11, at the Gabba on June 9.
What Griffen thought was a corked thigh on Saturday was found to be a thigh tear after a scan on Monday, with a further scan tomorrow likely to indicate how long he will be sidelined, while Johnson could also miss more than one match with a leg injury.
