BULLDOG veteran Scott West is used to the rough and tumble of AFL football, but isn't quite as comfortable being tackled in the water.

West and his Bulldogs teammates were yesterday given a lesson in water polo by Australian men's team members Trent Franklin and Sam McGregor.
Franklin and McGregor took a break from their preparations for this month's world championships to test the Dogs' aquatic skills.

West admitted he was surprised at how rough the sport can be.

"It was an amazing work-out," West said.

"Especially when you had the one-on-one duels and you're being pushed under and you've got a 90kg fellow on you and you're trying to get some air.

"I had seen it on TV and you see the under water shots on Roy and HG where it was famous for their commentary of the underwater play.

"It is amazing just to see how rough it is and what you can actually get away with."

Franklin, the Australian vice-captain, said he was impressed with the Bulldogs' efforts.

"They were really good," he said. "They really took to beating up each other in the water, which is sort of what we do each day."

The Bulldogs bowed out of the NAB Cup on Friday night with a 32-point quarter-final loss to the Brisbane Lions at Telstra Dome.

While coach Rodney Eade described the loss as a useful "wake-up call", West said the Bulldogs' plans remained on track.

"It's disappointing that we lost, you certainly want to go as far as you can in the NAB Cup," West said.

"We'll be able to reassess this week, give some guys a rest, play some guys that will be back for their first game for the pre-season and really build for Round 1.

"There is absolutely no reason to panic."
