FORMER Western Bulldogs star Rohan Smith is keeping his roots in the western suburbs after becoming Werribee Football Club’s new forward coach for season 2007.

Smith, who retired from the AFL ranks last year after 300 games wearing the red, white and blue, will be taking on the role in addition with his work for AFL NSW and media commitments at Foxtel.

And the newly retired star is keen to make a start with his new club.

“I love footy as much now as when I was running around in the under 11s at Kingsville,” Smith said.

“I wanted to stay involved and see what I could offer as a coach and this role fits perfectly.”

Seniors coach Simon Atkins, who played for the Bulldogs at the same time as Smith, said his appointment would be a big motivator for the side.

“He showed during his footy career his footy smarts and he will be an enormous addition to our off-field resources,” Atkins said

Great news. Smith should be able to offer the Bees a fair bit and I look forward to seeing if he can make a coaching transition.

Good news too in regards to what Smith can probably offer our young, Dogs listed players in this role.

Seriously, how was anyone going to get Smith to have no links to the Bulldogs for a year?

Guantanimo prison wouldn't have held him.

He is also working for Fox as a boundry runner, so he is right in there.
