WESTERN BULLDOGS 4.1 6.2 11.5 15.6 (96)
WEST COAST 0.1 4.5 7.7 11.10 (76)
Goals: W Bulldogs: Johnson 3, Eagleton 2, Cooney 2, Higgins 2, Minson, Robbins, Ray, Darcy, Giansiracusa, Hargrave. West Coast: Lynch 4, Armstrong 2, LeCras 2, Hunter, Cox, Judd.
Best: W Bulldogs: Eagleton, West, Johnson, Cooney, Boyd. West Coast: Cousins, Judd, Wirrpanda, Lynch.
Injuries: West Coast: Hansen (groin), Hunter (head cut). W Bulldogs: Grant (groin), Skipper (leg).
Umpires: Hendrie, Bandy, Margetts, Keating.
Crowd: 6873 at Subiaco Oval.
VETERAN Western Bulldog Chris Grant limped from the field with a groin injury only four minutes into his team's 20-point victory over West Coast last night and looks a big doubt for round one.
Both teams have concerns stemming from the game, with West Coast forward Ashley Hansen also coming off with a groin injury and young Dog Wayde Skipper hurting his foot. Hansen pulled up short after taking a mark midway through the second quarter.
Skipper had to be helped from the field in the third quarter after stubbing his foot as he tried to kick. He struggled to put any pressure on his right leg after the incident. Eagle Adam Hunter left the field in the final term with blood pouring down his face and jumper after being crunched by teammate Quinten Lynch.
After a tumultuous week in which the Eagles were embroiled in a drugs furore, the home team took forever to kick into gear and was goalless until 10 minutes into the second term.
The Eagles imposed a media ban on their players after the match, banning the press from even entering their changerooms. It was the first time under coach John Worsfold that a blanket media ban had been enforced.
The Eagles launched a series of stirring fightbacks throughout the game, led by their stars. Chris Judd and Ben Cousins sprang to life midway through the second term, Lynch kicked three goals in the third term, and then the Eagles reduced the deficit to only eight points nearing time-on in the final quarter, before Brad Johnson sealed the win.
For the Dogs, Nathan Eagleton had plenty of the ball in the midfield, Johnson, Scott West and Adam Cooney were their usual prominent selves, Luke Darcy showed signs that he could return to the player he was before his knee injuries and Shaun Higgins was lively in attack.
