View Full Version : Morgan vs Doogs?

Last year Adam Morgan played the first 4/5 games for us - barely getting a kick, but providing an improtant big body for our F50 structure.
Obviously he is gone, but with Doogs coming into the side will he be able to fill a similar role? He has been impressive so far in the pre-season, but is he playing more of a mobile marking forward rather than someone who will take the hit to bring the ball to ground?

I feel that he is playing the more mobile forward role, leading up the ground a bit to take his marks, rather than just being involved in a lot of contests closer to goal. I don't mind that though, as long as his disposal continues to improve.
Darcy will more likely play the closer to goal role where more contested marking situations occur, and should hopefully be able to do a reasonable job. It seems as though we haven't experimented too much with having McDougall play out of the goal square and be that long target, but given his size, and his agility, I feel he could probably do a reasonable job in that role. Given his assets though, I think Rocket will prefer him to utilise his pace and ability to pick the ball off the floor a bit further from goal.
Interesting comparison.

They are different types thats for sure but McDougall offers us a more pure player than Morgan. I wonder if Eade has him penciled in as a jack of all trades type rather than just a key forward and occasional defender.
What he has shown over and above any reports we have been reading about him is that he is a better tackler and applies more pressure than most eagles supporters have ever given him credit for. Morgan wasn't bad in that area but had a bit more crash and bash about him. Shame he couldn't string enough games together because when he wasn't injured he fitted into the team well.

Doogs' second efforts, and his chasing and tackling, have been most impressive over the preseason. And he's shown he has been, and will be, a very handy mobile, leading forward. If he holds his marks and improves his decision making he will be a great asset, and could prove to be the coup of last year's trade period.

Couldn't agree more. He is a wild card from the teams perspective and one that could really kick start us. 197cm and athletic is just what we need and from what I have seen he is a better mark than I thought as well. If he gets his confidence up he could be one of those missing links we have been searching for. I'm still cautious but a lot more optimistic than when we first selected him.

That is pretty much where I am at too. I didn't have him in my best 22 (he is still unproven as far as I'm concerned) but I'd think he will play in round 1 - even if just to give as a plan B if Mooney or Ottens is killing us.

I think Doogs v Bandy or Darcy 2007 v Morgan is a better comparison.
Morgan sat in the square most of the time while we are asking Doogs to roam around CHF and some times in the back line.

McDougall is a certainty, make no mistake about it.
He's a player with a far greater upside than Morgan.
Morgan at his best was still of little effect.
McDougall has a lot more strings to his bow. He's a much better mark, both on the lead and contested. He's better at ground level - he is surprising quite good here. He's got a greater leap and is faster off the mark, thus demanding a tall/athletic defender which can be hard to find at times.
His pressure is first rate too, he has caught a number of guys with great chases. Its been the most pleasing thing.
His biggest flaw at THIS stage is his decision making, he's too predictable - he simply bombs it long, regardless of the situation.
Nevertheless, I think he has great ability and could be a fantastic pick-up for us. Form what I've seen he's OK as a backmen too.
