A sombre thought at the start of the season reading Glenn Archer's column this morning - how many champions will retire this year?

Grant, Archer, Roo (bad back may get him sooner), Hird, Buckley, Harvey - anyone else?

It's sad but it happens. I remember feeling much the same way when players like John Platten and Jason Dunstall retired, Sticks too etc. At least we have some younger champions coming through the game - and the Dogs are lucky in that Westy and Johnson will both play at least 1 more year - Johnson could play another 3. I'm not ready to say goodbye to Johnno yet.

Shaun McManus and Shane Parker will probably finish up this year. Parker's the last original Docker, and one of the most consistent and underrated players of the last 10 years. McManus endured hell as captain during some dark times but fought back to become a strong on-field leader, despite his kicks usually going over the neighbour's fence and into the petunias. They are both one-club stalwarts who have given everything for their club.

I also wonder for how many it's going to be one season too many, and whether Eddie will ever let Bucks retire. I hear he is going to have him progressively embalmed one area per year, and won't let him retire till he has no limbs left working.

Good query - looking that way for Roo, could be the case for Archer and Grant.

Roo is in a bit of strife on the injury front and could be a number of weeks away from playing.

In spite of my earlier cynicism Bucks is close to calling it quits. If the current hammy problem doesn't clear up soon he could pull the pin. I don't think they expect to make the finals, so if he's going to miss most of the season he'll go.

So he'll join Roo and Grant.

Think I've pointed the bone with this thread. Watch out harvey!

Peter Bell was an original docker!

I hope not; there's a certain number three I'd like to see play in a Grannie and there's only one left in his career.

Chris Johnson, Chris or Brad Scott.

Steven King maybe. Shane Crawford? Kouta. Gasper.
