So who will be relegated?

Here's how the table stands at present:

Stoke City 42pts, GD -15, GS 35
Blackburn Rovers 40pts, GD -16, GS 39
Bolton Wanderers 39pts, GD -11, GS 40
Portsmouth 38pts, GD -17, GS 35
Sunderland 36pts, GD -15, GS 31
Newcastle United 34pts, GD -14, GS 40
---------------------------------------
Hull City 34pts, GD -23, GS 38
Middlesbrough 31pts, GD -26, GS 26
West Bromwich Albion 31pts, GD -28, GS 35

* The bottom three teams will be automatically relegated to the Championship.
* If two or more teams finish level on points the team with the better goal difference will finish higher.
* If two or more teams have the same points and the same goal difference, the team which has scored the higher number of goals will finish higher.
* If two or more teams finish level on points, goal difference and goals scored, and the championship, a relegation place or European qualification is at stake, they will then play off to decide who finishes higher.

All teams in the relegation zone have 4 games remaining. Who do they play?

Stoke City - West Ham (h)(L), Hull (a)(W), Wigan (h)(W), Arsenal (a)

Bolton Wanderers - Wigan (a)(D), Sunderland (h)(D), Hull (h)(D), Man City (a)

Portsmouth - Arsenal (h)(L), Blackburn (a)(L), Sunderland (h)(W), Wigan (a)

Blackburn Rovers - Man City (a)(L), Portsmouth (h)(W), Chelsea (a)(L), West Brom (h)

Sunderland - Everton (h)(L), Bolton (a)(D), Portsmouth (a)(L), Chelsea (h)

Hull City - Aston Villa (a)(L), Stoke (h)(L), Bolton (a)(D), Man Utd (h)

Newcastle United - Liverpool (a)(L), Middlesbro (h)(W), Fulham (h)(L), Aston Villa (a)

Middlesbrough - Man Utd (h)(L), Newcastle (a)(L), Aston Villa (h)(D), West Ham (a)

West Bromwich Albion - Spurs (a)(L), Wigan (h)(W), Liverpool (h)(L), Blackburn (a)

I can't see any changes happening, so by my reckoning, the bottom 3 teams can kiss the Premier League goodbye.

I thinke one of Newcastle or Middlesborough will advance at Hull's expense, on the provisdo that one of them gets maximum points when they play each other in a couple of weeks - Hull have won 2 matches in 25 weeks and don't look like achieving a positive result at the moment. Newcastle and Borough both have similarly tough runs home but they have the capability to gain another 4 to 5 points which might well be enough - I can't see Hull getting more than 1 or 2 points from now on.

Stoke have managed to survive on the one tactic - the long Rory Delap throw. Amazing effort by Tony Pulis and ther players if they manage to keep their heads above water.

I reckon Hull might just pinch a win over Stoke at home.

If, and I say IF, Man Utd have won the title by the final round and they are still alive in Europe, will Fergie turn out a side similar to the one that played Everton in the Cup semi to rest his players, giving Hull City a chance to pull off a remarkable final day escape. Intriguing.

Villa is 5th and on paper looks like a tough opponent, but they are on the bottom of the 'form table' for the whole league, and haven't won in 12 games (all comps). Hull Boro and NU all get a crack at them over the last 4 games, so there is some points to be had there.

It's pretty much as you were after this week. Amazingly, 8 out of the bottom 9 all lost, only Bolton eeking out a draw. Blackburn were the only team in the bottom 9 to score a goal.

Stoke City 39pts, GD -17, GS 33
Portsmouth 38pts, GD -18, GS 35

Tonight's clash between the Toon & Boro will have a significant bearing on that. Phil Brown will be praying for a draw.

Geez, the sadist in me wants to get up and watch that, just so I can see the pain etched on the supporters faces with it all pretty much hanging on the result from this game.

FWIW i hope the baggies escape!!!

It is one advantage that Euro football has over Aussie rules, the relegation battles... if a team is down the bottom, the relegation penalty is much worse than it is for our footy clubs. Tanking?? Theres no point and the integrity of the competition doesnt suffer.......

Massive, massive win by Newcastle this morning over Boro 3-1. The win lifts them out of the relegation zone.

Hull City 35pts, GD -23, GS 39
---------------------------------------
Newcastle United 34pts, GD -15, GS 40
Middlesbrough 32pts, GD -26, GS 27

* Portsmouth & Sunderland still to play this weekend.

Table with 1 round remaining:

Sunderland 36pts, GD -17, GS 32
Hull City 35pts, GD -23, GS 39
---------------------------------------
Newcastle United 34pts, GD -15, GS 40
Middlesbrough 32pts, GD -26, GS 27
*West Bromwich Albion 31pts, GD -30, GS 35

Matches that matter:

Sunderland v Chelsea
Hull City v Manchester United
Aston Villa v Newcastle
West Ham v Middlesbrough

*West Brom have been relegated.

Other scenarios:

*If Sunderland win they survive. If Sunderland lose or draw & both Newcastle & Hull win, Sunderland will be relegated.

*If Hull win they survive. If Hull draw & Newcastle draw, Hull survive. If Hull draw & Newcastle win, Hull are relegated. If Hull lose & Newcastle win or draw Hull are relegated.

*If Newcastle lose to Aston Villa, Newcastle will be relegated. If Newcastle draw & Hull lose to Manchester United they will survive on goal difference. If Newcastle win they will survive only if one of Hull or Sunderland lose or draw. If Hull & Sunderland both win then Newcastle are relegated irrespective of their own result.

*If Middlesbrough lose or draw to West Ham, Boro will be relegated. Boro can only survive, if they win & Newcastle lose to Aston Villa & Hull lose to Manchester United & there is a 4 goal swing between themselves & Hull. In other words Boro need to win 2-0 & Hull need to lose 2-0. Anything less than a 4 goal swing will mean Boro are relegated due to goal difference or in the event of a 3 goal swing, they'll be relegated by virtue of goal difference or having scored less goals than Hull.

Interesting when you look at a map on North East England & then look at the 4 teams fighting to avoid being 2 of those to be relegated; Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough & Hull.

* Hull have a chance against Man United, given that United already have the title in the bag and will probably field a very weakend side. Considering how Ferg feels about Shearer (still loathes him I reckon from the fact that he never signed for him!) ... we might see Gary Neville and Edwin Van Der Saar up front.

* Newcastle away at Villa will be a titanic struggle. Villa are in poor form, and have nothing to play for but pride. Newcastle on the other hand will be doing everything in their power to secure a win. Let's hope Viduka can provide another magical effort in keeping a Northern team up for another season!

* Boro are going to struggle to get a result at Upton Park methinks. West Ham are fighting for a European spot and will be doing their best by fielding a strong side. West Ham have been super impressive under Snr Zola.

* Sunderland will play a strong Chelsea side - who will be hoping Liverpool fall over so that they can acquire that 2nd spot. Chelsea will be far too strong I think.

Dante's prediction: West Brom, Boro and Sunderland to go down. Newcastle will get the result they need and move to 37 points. Hull will get a win from their clash with Man United, moving them to 38 points. A point would not be enough because that would level them with Sunderland (presuming Sunderland lose) and Sunderland have the better goal difference. Can't see Sunderland getting anything against Chelsea, meaning they will be pipped at the last second by Newcastle and Hull.

Good post Dante ... but I hope your wrong ... I would hate to see the Black Cats relegated. What's working in our favour is the fact that Sunderland will know the results of the other two games just as they hit the park; therefore knowing exactly what is required to stay in the EPL

It's just me, but Newcastle deserve to go down, being the most mismanaged club in the Premier League of the past decade (with Spurs a close second).

Thing is, if they do go down, they will more than likely do a Leeds and get relegated again next year (the fallout from relegation -- losing most of the team, management etc. -- will be massive and will take some time to get back to even keel).

Giants fall hard.

If you want t see pure emotion; the agony & the ecstasy, then watch the final round of the EPL tonight.

You'll see fans erupting into spontaneous rapture as they learn of a goal at another ground that's as good as scoring one themselves or even better.

You'll see lots of tears as the emotion just becomes too much to bear.

Its what makes sport so great.

I wouldn't miss it for the world & really do hope Newcastle stay up, their fans are deserving of so much more than what their team has dished up this season.

The games that count:

Aston Villa 1
Newcastle United 0

Hull City 0
Manchester United 1

Sunderland 2
Chelsea 3

West Ham 2
Middlesbrough 1

The 4 sides facing relegation all lost, so its as you were, meaning Newcastle & Middlesbrough drop down to the Championship.

Has any team been relegated from the EPL and due to their geographical location looked to join either Wales or Scottish leagues?

For whatever reason I thought I read that Wigan looked at joining the Scotland PL a while back.

No, haven't heard of that one.

So Relegated are West Brom, Middlesbro & Newcastle.

Promoted are Wolves & Birmingham.

Tonight sees the 60 million pound clash between Burnley & Sheffield United at Wembley to claim the final promotion place into the EPL.

No, haven't heard of that one.

Here it is. I might have read it wrong.

The club was formed in 1932 following the demise of Wigan Borough the previous year. With Wigan County, Wigan United and Wigan Town also failing to establish themselves, this was fifth time lucky as far as Wigan Athletic were concerned.

Wigan hold the record for the biggest cup win by a non-league club over a league club. In the 1934/35 season, they defeated Carlisle United 6-1 in the FA Cup fifth round. This was achieved when playing in the Cheshire County League and it was not until 1978, and after appearances in the Lancashire Combination and Northern Premier League, that Wigan were elected to the Football League.

This came after numerous failed election attempts and a controversial application to join the Scottish League Second Division. They finished runners-up to Boston United in the Northern Premier League, but the latter's ground and facilities were deemed unsuitable for the Football League, and the Latics were put forward for election.

Wigan took their first step towards the Premier League in 1997 when they won the Third Division under John Deehan. Paul Jewell then earned promotion to the First Division with a points tally of 100 in 2002/03, just his second season at the club.

Can I say, quietly, that I'm stoked over this result. Not because I've got any affinity for Burnley, but because..

THE PIGS LOST!!!!!!

(I'm a Sheffield Wednesday man, just in case that didn't make any sense. Was dreading United getting into the premiership before the Owls, but now we'll have another season of Sheffield "Steel City" derbies to look forward to -- did the double over them this season, now to actually win promotion before they do...)
