I cannot get enthusiastic about soccer, so boring. The only reason the crowd sings at these matches is because they have nothing to do, they are bored, so they sing.

Do you really get excited, thrilled for 90 minutes?

I liked the World Cup and started to get into the Victory in the last half of the 07/08 season but since then it has become impossible for me to watch 90 minutes of this sport.

The transfers are at least interesting to watch.

Yeah you're right not the best forum to have a whack at aussie rules! Personally I'm sick of the jibes at soccer and the continual comparison by talk back callers,Sms messages with Aussie Rules. Why can't people just accept that people like all sports?Plenty of Aussie rules games i've seen that haven't had 2 minutes of excitement. Just preparing when the world cup comes along we're going to get the obligatory ''soccer's boring'' B/S not as exciting as our game. Just a reminder that Soccer has the biggest sporting event called WORLD CUP.

Don't understand your question. Most sports started in 1 country then grew. They are suppose to grip the world just the same way other sports grip the world.

Australian rules football existed before Association Football and Rubgy did.

One major reason Australian rules football hasn't taken off around the world is the rules are fundamentally flawed.

Australia was isolated from the rest of the world, for such along time and with no borders with other countries, very difficult for AFL to grow. Soccer, has had the advantage of European countries being so close, and therefore entrenching the sport into their culture.

I suppose I mean the game in general.
Well too much is open to interpretation of the umpire. 3 main officials mean you get no consistency. Too often a free can go either way- no wonder OS people get confused.

In 100+ years of Australian rules, you can still smash someone out cold, be seen but continue to play and influence the game on the day. How is that fair?

Australia has always been full of people from Europe originally so it's natural that their sports reach us and we probably know about American sports because we watch movies and TV shows made in America like High School Musical and Remember the Titans. But how do we get countries to even become aware of our sport?

That's why i think it's a bit dodgy to look at who watches the game rather than the actual game itself.

The european influence has been here since 1788 yet football(soccer) wasn't popular here til at least the 1970s.

Its 2009, we get plenty of exposure overseas, if the game was going anywhere it would have done so already.

Followers of Aussie Rules haven't migrated to other countries and brought Aussie Rules with them like soccer fans have done. Sure, there's the odd league in Japan and the US played by ex-Aussies but that's not on the same scale as what soccer fans have brought to nations across the world. I don't care if Aussie Rules is only played in Australia anyway. It means we get to watch the BEST players of the sport play in one league rather than being spread out over the world.

They kick around a football. Your arguements are flawed and you are making yourself look silly with this line.

As for the comparison with the NFL, the NFL plays a game in England every year and are considering adding a 2nd. They get 80,000 people to those games which are played at Wembley stadium. Once the AFL starts doing even a quarter of that we can compare the 2.

Now you need to re-read my posts...I said "we called it soccer" in reference to my own personal experiences. You can't call those experiences into question as "crap" - you weren't there. And then you make claims to know what sort of world I live in?

As for your claims of soccer being the "American name", well, I took your advice and hit the research trail. I discovered in my cyberspace travels, that the word soccer is NOT actually an American creation, but originated in fact, in England! True, it is most commonly called soccer in America, but the word came from a slang term for "Association Football" - and is believed to have come from a former England captain. According to www.expertfootball.com, a game of football existed before rugby and Association football split into two distinct sports. So it wasn't soccer first. Apparently.

So far you've claimed I look both an idiot AND ignorant. That's not very nice. I think I've shown neither to be true.

Secondly I don't doubt the origin of the word soccer is in England since the language is English and the game originated there. However no one in England calls the game soccer, its called football like everywhere in the world. The US have almost always been calling it soccer because they have their own version of football. It certainly doesn't mean that the game of association football isn't football over there too. Australia has adopted the name from the US not England.
