Reading some random comments about preseason innovative practice and conditioning remided me of North's new strategy for quarter and three quarter time breaks.

For those that didn't see it, basically they got them to keep walking around in a huddle rather than standing or sitting still, in an effort to reduce lactic acid buildup. Whether it was the catalyst or not, it should be noted that North did come out of the blocks better at the start of each quarter.

Do you think this is something that will catch on? It certainly makes a lot of sense but I am a little concerned about how well Rocket will be able to give his 'adrenalin injection kind words' while he is forced to walk backwards.

Maybe all that walking at 3/4 time tired them out - so in the last 25 seconds of the game Fremantle - Fremantle - were able to go coast to coast under little (and maybe even less than that) pressure and win the game.

I say FAD. I say meaningless FAD. If the players believes it helps reduce lactic build-up, then it does...but I cannot believe they will be able to sell that idea for 22 weeks.

I agree that it won't last but not because it wouldn't have some effect. I just think the small gain would be far outweighed by the loss of being able to give the address properly between quarters. Nevertheless an interesting idea.

Then they have players go and sit on the bench for minutes at a time.

Maybe they're just trialling it to see how it goes?

MJP you know your stuff, wouldn't it be better to cut the quarter time addresses short a bit and get them moving again for the last minute or so so they don't stand standing still?

but they all jog out to their positions after the talks anyway. I think it is pointless.

I guess only time will be the judge, but when Wallace first introduced the warm up out on the ground approx 1 hour before game time everyone also thought FAD.

Do majority of teams still do this?

Most clubs use cycles on the boundary line but I am not convinced walking around will make a massive difference. That said, clubs are always looking for anything that gives even a tiny advantage. Maybe they will start giving them all headsets for the address.
