Facial infection putting Dog 'in and out of hospital'

WESTERN Bulldogs midfielder Mitch Honeychurch is battling a facial infection that has seen him hospitalised several times over the past week.

The 22-year-old was a late withdrawal the day before last week's win over Essendon, and isn't registered on the club's injury list.AFL.com.au understands the fourth-year Bulldog experienced symptoms of the infection following the round 18 trip to Cairns to play Gold Coast, and that saw him seek treatment at a hospital.

Coach Luke Beveridge said on Friday that Honeychurch may take some time to recover from the ailment."Mitch is still a bit crook, he hasn't returned (to the club) this week because he's really ill, so that's really unfortunate," Beveridge said."He's had an infection, been really crook and been in and out of hospital.

"His energy is down, he's virtually got none, and it might take him a little while to recover, unfortunately.

"He's not in at the club, (and) he hasn't been in all week.

    "
Out of contract at season's end, the setback comes at a frustrating time for the Eastern Ranges product, as he'd played six games straight from round 13 after largely being out of favour for the past two seasons.Recruited to Whitten Oval with pick 60 in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft, Honeyhurch has played only 22 games in that period.

Any word on Easton Wood's injury?

Guessing he will miss a few weeks.

In his presser Bevo said with the straightest of faces we'll hopefully have Morris back in "a couple of weeks".

Knowing Dale, you wouldn't bet against it.

Depending on scans, could be out for the rest of the year.

Has anyone else noticed how horrendous our injury list is at the moment?

Would be great to have back in the side right now along with Marcus Adams.

Both in 2016 our premiership year and 2017 so far we have been very unlucky with injuries. The luck hasn't changed this year.

YES! Mentioned last night that we have 6 guaranteed starters out, 3 that push for selection and even Honeychurch who was filling in for those injuries.

Adams, TBoyd, Morris, JJ, Stringer, Dunkley, Dickson, Church, Jong & Crameri.

Now add Wood but get back hopefully JJ, Stringer, Dunkley and Dickson

Channel 7 are a disgrace .. Long term injuries and name Dunkley , Stringer , Campbell. Seriously one player yesterday and the two others might play next week.
They do no research at all

Our backline's copped the brunt of it too. And our forward line's been necessarily makeshift as well albeit to a slightly lesser extent.

Of course we've got mids up the wazoo so that area's been left largely intact by the injury gods.

Re: Injury List - 2017 Season

    Fingers Crossed today on scans:

WESTERN Bulldogs defender Easton Wood hasn't given up hope of playing again this season, with scans to reveal how bad his latest hamstring injury is.

The Bulldogs vice-captain has a history of hamstring problems, but hadn't been affected this season until the first quarter of Saturday's win over the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba.

The 27-year-old missed six weeks with the injury last season before returning to lead the club to the flag in the absence of captain Robert Murphy.
Speaking at Melbourne Airport on crutches upon returning from Brisbane, Wood conceded he was "a little bit sore", but hopeful his 2017 campaign wasn't over.

"I'm disappointed but we don't know what the extent of the injury is yet," Wood told Channel Seven.
"I've done a few (hamstrings), and it didn't feel great, so we'll wait and see how bad it is."

With the Dogs needing to win at least two of their remaining three matches to qualify for finals, that scenario would give Wood a month to recover for a possible elimination final in the second week of September.

Like in 2016, the bye round before the first week of finals could again aid Wood in a tilt at the flag.
The extra time off last year allowed him to recover from an ankle injury - and several other teammates from varying concerns - in time for the elimination final win over West Coast.

"(The week off before finals) does give you that extra little bit of a cushion," Wood said.
"Once we find out what the damage is, hopefully there will be enough time to get back."
While the loss of the 2015 All Australian is a massive blow to the Dogs' chances of going back-to-back, it's likely to be offset by the return of Jake Stringer.

Sidelined for the past three weeks, the dynamic forward was also struck down by a hamstring injury but is likely to be available for Friday night's huge encounter against fierce rival Greater Western Sydney.

Midfielder Josh Dunkley could also come into consideration to face the Giants, after collecting 26 disposals and a goal in his VFL return from a long-term shoulder injury.

Premiership defender Fletcher Roberts has been dropped twice already this season, but he may be given a reprieve after the injuries to Wood, Dale Morris (broken arm) and Marcus Adams (fractured foot).

Star playmaker Jason Johannisen should also be available after being a late withdrawal on the weekend due to a back complaint.
