    RIP The great Lou Richards

Passed this afternoon at 94 years of age .. The kiss of death as he was known in the media .. The man who actually started the banter and fun in newspaper articles .. Will Always be my favourite media person.

RIP Lou. Remember him fondly during his commentating days. Loved the passion that he brought to the game and this really showed in the way he commentated.

Will never forget your voice, your crazy dares and the laughs I had with you Jack and Bob. R.I.P and thanks for bringing me the footy every Thursday on League Teams as a kid.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

And every seven days three wise men would sit in judgement of the young men of the city
And the names of these wise men were John, Robert and Louis.

Remember Lou's recipe at the end? He'd read out a recipe while Jack and Bob talked over him, distracted him, talked to each other, asked him questions and generally caused chaos. They'd read a team or two out every now and then too.
Have you been reading those Roddy Doyle books again, Dougal!?

Re: RIP The great Lou Richards

Lou Richards was the face and voice of footy when I was a kid. I love watching flashback games just to hear his voice.

Great man (particularly for a Collingwood person!) As a Dogs supporter, the biggest compliment I can pay is that he did more for footy off the field than our own EJ. Ted promoted state footy, but Louie the Lip promoted footy, itself. My dad was there the day Louie "mowed" Ted's lawn in Hampshire Road, Sunshine after the Dogs upset the Pies in the late 50's or early 60's. Dad told me at least 5,000 turned up to see it! It was a big day for us, but something Lou did week in, week out.

Also looked at the parallels of Louie and our own Charlie Sutton. Louie was just over a year older than Charlie, started his career a year earlier and captained what was the Pies' '53 premiership side at the age of 30 - 12 months before Charlie captain-coached ours at age 30. An inch and a half also separated them in height.

Two little giants of the game and most most importantly, great family men.

What I liked when Lou was commentating games there were no special comments people to ruin the call. He and his co commentator would just call the footy.

    RIP

Yeah you're right. I remember once Peter Landy breaking off in mid commentary and saying "thanks Lou, that's the back of my hand not the ashtray" I hope Lou just flicked ash onto his hand and didn't try to stub his cigarette out.
