Re: Western Bulldogs vs Hawthorn - Community Series 2/03/24
Some good learnings tonight
Backline; Looked good. Richards and Jones were awesome. Love the way Coffield goes about it. Reminds me a bit of James Frawley, no fuss type.
Bramble isn?t a lock down defender, looked better as an attacking type, his low in that pecking order though behind the likes of JJ and Dale. Duryea showed he still has a little bit left. Khamis played well, good in the air, maybe we can get away with him as the 2nd key defender against certain opponents.
Midfield; For a top midfield we sure have some lapses. Slept in 2nd quarter, dominant in 3rd. Bont, Libba, Treloar, Sanders were supreme. One little thing for Sanders tonight to improve on is sticking some more tackles. Gallagher was ok, he needs to learn how to get involved more. Harmes was serviceable, he adds a bit of intensity to us. Vandermeer was ok early, not sure if his night ended prematurely?
Forwards; Goalkicking woes are obvious. Ended up being a handy night in the end. Weightman is better value to us closer to goal, I don?t think he needs to play so far up.
Like the approach to utilise Naughton more. Get him in the game as much as possible like Cats do with Jeremy Cameron etc. I think coaches know this, hence why he even started at a centre bounce. Jamarra showed good signs, Lobb played his role enough to retain his spot.
West > McNeil today
Daniel has limitations but needs to play imo, I think it?s at half forward

Khamis - played nicely, I'm still not confident about him as the genuine second tall defender though
Coffield - I think he's a back 6 lock now. They seem confident for him to play small or tall and his intercepting was fantastic.
Bramble - 50/50. I'd keep him in and have Dale replace Duryea. His pace and ability to go past a tackler is second only to JJ.
Daniel - Too good not to play. Just need to find a spot.
Vandermeer - I think he's behind McNeil and West, so I don't think there's a spot
McNeil - he's built on a solid pre-season and is starting to look like a genuine small forward. I think he plays against the Dees

You need to realise Sanders weakness will be tackling he is 18 up against hard bodies, that will take one or two more pre seasons , at the minute he is an inside mid with great vision , use his strengths.

West had 5 assists tonight to go with his 3 goals. Very very good output for a difficult role

Have you not seen him tackle? I mean it's not a Tony Liberatore level but he's strong in a contest.

McNeil
Khamis - Thought he was solid in the backline, didn't drop any of his marks - 8 for the match - plays round 1
Coffield - Thought he got better as the game went along - plays round 1
Bramble - ditto but not round 1 - have to fit Dale in.
Daniel - when he has the ball, he hits a target. Not sure what is going on. see how he trains
Vandermeer - a no for me
McNeil - 14 disposals to half time and only 2 in the second half. should have nailed the two set shots. Sub in round1

McNeil was probably our best player in the 2nd quarter. He was able to find the ball and lay some good tackles- seemed to be playing up the ground a bit more as well. Given Hawthorn?s dominance in that2nd qtr I thought it was a fair effort by McNeil (bar the two set shots).
We were more direct in the 2nd half and stopped their run on as well. Thus negating McNeil?s effectiveness.
Him and Westy are lock ins for round 1

McNeil and Coffield absolute locks, no doubt in my mind.
Khamis a good chance.
Bramble and VDM may lose their spots to Scott/Baker, depending on how roles are shuffled around.
We looked better with Daniel on the field. I think we find a spot for him.

Agreed,
One of best games for us I reckon.
