Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 19, 2023 vs Essendon

This is the Round 19, 2023 edition of the weekly Bankers and Anchors thread. Once this evening's game against Essendon is concluded post your nominations for:

The Bankers = 3 guys/aspects of the game that we banked on to do the right thing during the game
The Anchors = 3 guys/aspects of the game that weighed us down by their errors or poor play

Please limit it to no more than three of each player or aspect of the game, but feel free to make honourable/dishonourable mentions. As usual try to make it constructive criticism.

Try and restrict it to individual players rather than aspects of the overall match - I will allow more freedom now as the thread seems to be going down more of the aspects of the game path so you can have 3 for each made up of aspects of the game and individual players.

The thread is named in honour of a popular WOOF Contributor, The Banker, who passed away on 22/04/2012 after a six month battle with cancer

    Bankers

Libba - absolute herculean performance tonight.
Bont - that was a real Captain's knock. So many moments from him all night in offense, in defense at crucial times too.
Daniel - his calmness and sureness by foot tonight was important

    Anchors.
    Marra's goalkicking . He could've, should've had a monster night
The first quarter. I thought we were cooked.
Bruce could've ended up with 7 or 8 kicked on him, if Essendon hadn't decided their best chance of winning was playing kick to kick in the back half.

    Bankers

Midfielders answering the challenge at Quarter time.
A good spread of goal kickers
Disciplined but also an attacking defensive effort.

    Anchors

We still haven't solved our 2nd ruck role
    Our slow start

    Bankers
Tom Liberatore and Marcus Bontempelli , two classical displays, should split the brownlow vote for tonight.
The return to form of Bailey Smith.
    Cody Weightman, maximized his opportunities.

    Anchors
Josh Bruce, too slow, looks past it imo.
Buku Khamis, tried hard but looked far too slow for the AFL pressure.
Alex Keath, a serviceable game but indecisive in releasing the ball.

The midfield were impressive tonight. It was about as good an effort as I've seen from them this season (1st qtr aside)

Bont's all-field game. Has there ever been a better all-field player when on song? Takes intercepts down back, plugs holes, wins clearances in the middle and kicks goals up forward. Sometimes within the same play. That goal was sublime by the way.

Intensity right to the final siren, after our concentration lapsed early it didn't again for the rest of the game. Impressive and something that's been missing.

Poulter's composure and decision making at AFL level, he's making a very strong case for continued inclusion towards the pointy end.

    Anchors

Essendon fans howling at every potential free kick.

Allowing the Bombers to dominate in the air early.

Baz's set shot, he deserved a goal with his fierce tackling tonight.
    'And the Western suburbs erupt!'

    Bankers

    1. Libba was every where, 36 disposals including 12 clearances

    2. Bont - what a performance. His goal in the third was special

    3. Team - Great second quarter performance

    Anchors

    1. Third quarter turnovers - we just kept kicking the ball long and straight to Essendon players. Lucky they weren't good enough to make us pay.

    2. Like others said the Essendon supporters were annoying - crying for frees

    3. Set shots - we missed some easy ones.

Can vouch for this for sure. Was right next to our cheer squad but sitting next to an Essendon supporter. Always good when we beat them. A local derby as well.

    Bankers

    Bont, Libba, Daniel
JUH's increasing danger means that opportunity sides can't triple team Naughton any more
Some bottom six guys played played quite well, eg Poulter, Scott, West

    Anchors

    Kharmis looked lost
    Bruce terrible
    Mids switching off in quarters
The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride.
