Courtesy of Tradeweekradio twitter account it's just been confirmed by McLachlan that Richmond and Carlton will open the season yet again. Why do these clubs seem to have first rights to this clash? Has there even been a good match by them to start the season yet?

Another tweak on next years fixture is that no side will get 2 games against both Gold Coast & Greater Western Sydney.

You may get 2 games against one of them, but not both.

WTF?

How arbitrary is this rubbish? When will they decide when this 'principle' no longer applies? When GC win their first premiership? Why even bother to call it a 'draw' anymore? It's a pre-determined fixture list that takes into account marketing requirements, Eddie's complaints, fitting in as many contrived and artificial 'blockbuster games' as you can for the so-called 'big clubs', and stadium deals. Things like fairness or 'running a farking competition' are just old-fashioned distractions to be ignored.

It's like telling lies. Once you make something up you have to just keep making up more and more lies to cover for the first one, consistency be damned.

I thought AD said that the blow-outs weren't a problem and it was a slow news week? It's funny how he slams people's opinions as ridiculous on the one hand and then acknowledges that wait, maybe they had a point after all, by fixing things on the sly. Why can't he just admit these things openly when they happen? It shits me how lying is so intrinsic to the DNA of the current AFL administration.

While we are on it, if there are any byes clubs should be pulled out of a hat. It's just another advantage/disadvantage to add to the other ridiculous list of inequalities in the fixturing.

I am not sure if anyone saw it, but earlier in the year on AFL 360 Brad Scott was asked when he thought the best time to get the byes would be. His answer:

"Collingwoods.."

Haven't the AFL repeatedly say the draw isn't even?

I think we need to accept that. Until the entire structure of the competition changes (if it ever does) where by you can play home/away every team - or a portion of them in a conference type system - you're not going to get anything near equality. But that's, in part, why the AFL give us millions each year.

You won't get it perfect but you could get it 100 times fairer than it currently is.

I don't think they will totally abolish the bye. It will certainly look different from last year with even teams now, but reports were that clubs liked having two byes especially when the players were more fatigued with only three on the interchange.

Very smart move by the AFL. I thought the dumbest thing they did this year was kicking off Gold Coast a week late. They need to build excitement, and as the first game of the year, every diehard footy fan will be watching, not just the supporters of either club.

If it (GWS v Syd) is anything like GC's first game this year most footy fans will be changing stations at 1/4 time.... but I guess that's no different to what happens with the traditional opener.

No we are contracted to play there. The AFL made a deal with NT government to play something like 6 games there over 3 years. The teams would be Melbourne, Richmond and us. Richmond have asked to pull out for 2012 and have off loaded the game to Melbourne. Pretty sure its our turn as well for 2012.

I think no matter what, if a team is good enough, the draw is their least concern. The main thing for us is trying to get supporters to games and make some money.

Looks an OK draw given we don't play the teams who should be challenging twice (outside of Geelong).

The 6 day breaks is a real issue though. I'd like to know how other sides field in this issue, we seem to get screwed by it every year ... and there's quite a few in this one.

In terms of difficulty of the Draw the most significant fact is who of the top 5 teams do we play twice.
