I thought it would be a good idea to create a membership numbers thread for this season.

Today on 10/12/11 our website is showing that we have a total of 16360 members.

I can't find a post on what it was for the equivalent time last year but for the 2010 season I had reported from our club's website that our total membership was 14980 as at 9/12/09. As we reached our record ever figure in 2010 we seem to be tracking well.

Just checked BF and it was reported there on 8/12/10 that our membership was 15068.

Still early days.

I had to scale back my wife's membership as she will be popping out a new addition to the family come season start, i'm assuming a 3 game membership still counts the same?

In that case i will guess 32,784 based on a good start to the season, a debacle like this year and it will get much more than 30,000

Is this the third or fourth season it has been in effect? But it is a good point you raise.

Either way not a bad start.

It's an interesting thought indeed, I would think that most of these early numbers are people that like it easy and automatically renew.

The real test will come in Feb when the pre season stuff starts, No Rocket or Hall whos going to get the media attention and keep us in the papers, after a poor season last year the dogs need to come out of the blocks firing on win games.

Not come out in losing games and say they are getting use to a new game plan.

Maybe they've started signing people up for it regardless. I didn't become a bulldog for life but it didn't stop them from charging me for the membership.

Fair point. Our 2010 annual report stated that the number of Bulldog for Life members was 11455. The 2011 version says 12504.

Of course some may have opted out and some others who have now signed up for the Life program may have have manually renewed by the equivalent time last year. Overall we are probably tracking identically to last season.

Agreed. The club tries as hard as it can to build the membership base but the end result is very much linked to our on field performance. Under 30,000 would be a disaster.

Just was interested in people's thoughts about ways to increase membership. Obviously being successful is the main way to increase it but I was thinking that the Bulldogs could go to all part of Melbourne (South, East (where I am) and North) from time to time to promote the club and get some new supporters along with the supporters we have in the Western Suburbs.

I think the old man goes to the club to renew in October or early November - and we got our tickets about 2-3 weeks ago - which is fine. You'd think that all memberships should be received by mid to late next week at the latest - otherwise they'kll be fielding plenty of calls.

The Club have obviously had issues this year with their membership card distribution.

A number of us received the following eMail from the Club today.

Dear Doc26

Thank you for choosing to be part of the Western Front in 2012.

On behalf of the Western Bulldogs, I would like to sincerely apologise that you are yet to receive your membership card.
The delay is a result of an error in the card fulfillment process. I would like to reassure you that both the Western Bulldogs and it’s third parties have been working closely together to ensure that this error does not occur again.

We have received confirmation that your membership card will be mailed to your address on Monday afternoon, to be received in time for Round 1 of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

I look forward to seeing you at the footy and sharing an exciting and successful journey in 2012.

We paid to renew our membership last year as well and yet to receive our membership cards. We asked many times but was told to wait for a bit longer. Last week my wife followed up with them at the Whitten Oval office again and this time they told us that the contractor company who print and supply the membership cards had stuffed up 'a file'. We were also on that list.

In regards to today game, please read this from the WB website http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/westernbulldogsnewsfeatures/newsarticle/tabid/4112/newsid/130547/default.aspx ... I have a reserved seat at the Footscray End & there are usually quite a few spare seats around us. I would think that you could get an upgrade to a seat (ie use your membership for entry to the ground & just pay the extra for a seat) and just buy a seat for the day for your 'misses'. I'm not sure how much they are for level 1. Good luck!! :)

Last year we were selling General Admission priced tickets in the Footscray End at the gate, due to the low number of membership numbers in that area.
It was easy to get mates in to my reserved seating area, without cheating the system of course! :D

Latest numbers at 24,923 on the website.

While improving it's still low. I think we would be the lowest victorian side at the moment.
North is 2000 ahead of us and Melbourne further again (helps with their MCC count these days).

Considering richmond are at 43000, hawthorn 53,400 we are a mile off most other clubs.

Yes especially comparing against another struggling club. North supporters are worst than ours and I think they are pretty buoyant about the up coming season, whereas, once more our supporters will wait to see how we go in the next couple of rounds. Beat West Coast and Adelaide and watch them hop on board.

The difference with north is that even if they have good membership numbers they simply dont turn up to games. Our crowds on ave would be much bigger against the smaller drawing/interstate clubs.

True but it's never a good thing to be at the very bottom of membership numbers in Victoria. You are always the first name anyone brings up when talking about handouts or culling teams because the league is all of a sudden too big.
You are right i think a lot of people are very apprehensive about this coming season.
A lot of bulldog supporters identify with key individuals, ie Barry Hall, Jason Akermanis, Rodney Eade, Grant, Whitten, Johnno etc, and a change like we have had can bring uncertainty. We have no real famed heroes of the club at the moment, our two best players barely played last year and there are doubts over if they can return to form ever again. Also a brand new coach with a famous face or name after getting rid of a successfull one.
All of these points would explain our slow membership sales, and hopefully a good start will get them signing on.

Knocking off WCE at home would be a great start, follow that up with an away win in Adelaide after they won the pre-season, and then beating a team that have the wood on us in StKilda would be perfect. 3-0 here we come. :p

Knocking off WCE at home would be a great start, follow that up with an away win in Adelaide after they won the pre-season, and then beating a team that have the wood on us in StKilda would be perfect. 3-0 here we come. :p

The jumper has been a big change too; not to be underestimated.
We will be fierce in the stoppages this season and that's going to win a lot of hearts.
Predicting a bit of a membership spike as new heroes become known to the fans.

Looking forward to:
Callan Ward V Clay Smith
Brian Lake V Buddy Franklin
Luke Dahlhaus V anyone who can catch him.

Hopefully it doesn't have a negative effect, the robodog on the front of our previous jumper was quite attractive to kids.

Good point with the jumper change chef although I do like the fact that we have gone back to our traditional jumper. Hopefully Round 1 against West Coast can be a first up win at home for us which would be a very good start. It won't be easy though as many people predict West Coast will be right up there at the business end of the season.

We're still close to 5K off that figure. If we don't jump out of the blocks and win some games we'll be lucky to get 27K.

That will be a factor in whether or not we get 30,000 members this year. Good start = Members will get on board, Bad start = Members won't sign up. It is as simple as that.

There's a cut off somewhere around Round 10 or 12 (?) -- someone will correct me soon -- when they stop counting and publish the official membership numbers, which is from memory the same cut-off for social club members getting a guaranteed GF ticket.

As an aside, as far as things go, having a pretty much permanent social club membership in case of a GF appearance (not that it's why I do it, but other social members will probably agree that you don't get a heck of a lot of extra value for what you pay) is probably the worst deal I've ever signed up to in my life :D.. hopefully we start making a whole lot of them one of these days to make all that extra investment worthwhile!

That hurts my head to think of it like that.

I like to think of it as a little something extra I can give to the club, and an awesome insurance policy in the best case scenario. It's got far better dividends than paying something boring like car insurance :D

What does it cost to get a GF package deal seat these days off the street?, $1000?

compare that to SC every year of $100, then if we do make it you would pay around $350? for a ticket anyway. If i had a piggy bank and managed to keep it from my wife it would probably be a better deal financially, although the club wouldn't get any of it.

I've never understood that either. Maybe we need salesmen on foot around the grounds to lure these supporters in. I'm sure a lot look at it and think they can't afford it. If we had people walking around the ground trying to sell memberships then they could explain some of the easy payment plans as well as how important a membership is to the club.

When the Bob Murphy phone recording was issued out to all the people who have not signed up they both made the comments of "if that was actually Bob on the phone i wouldn't have been able to say no to signing up"

Maybe we could get some players to ring up people who have not renewed.

I think the problem with new people not signing up is, they don't understand how easy and cheaper it is to be a member.

I've been a member for 5 years now, but before that I never actually considered joining up cos I didn't know how, didn't understand the pricing, options etc.

Maybe the ads they have on Fox Footy should explain the costs and ease of signing up. Not just tell people to sign up

It'll be disapointing if it doesn't. While we may not win a huge number of games this year, you can't doubt the players are having a crack which is what supporters want in a development year, plus there's been clear signs that progress is being made. I'm certainly enjoying this year more than last.

As I just posted on BF:

After 34 years of being a Bulldogs member, this year almost didn't happen. Financial worries regarding my hospital stay in March forced me to delay a decision, but everything was settled this week so... I just renewed my membership online - my 35th year. And yes, I did convince my cat, Lily, to renew her Pet membership too, though after Geelong's Grand Final win last year, Lily was quite keen on joining them. However, through gentle persuasion(I threatened to throw out her favourite catnip toy) Lily agreed to give the Bulldogs another chance and become a member for the second time, keeping the tradition of my late cat, Jordan's ten+ Bulldogs Pet Memberships alive.

So I guess we now have 29416 members.

Hopefully I'll be over for the start of the 2013 season to renew my membership in person. I really miss doing that.

Interesting you bring that up heard a bit of Eddie McGuire on SEN, thinks the AFL might be undermining the clubs screaming for people to get on board but then offering more in AFL membership, was something to do with AFL members getting finals tickets over team members I believe.

No only Foxtel but live matches on Ch7.

I tend to agree more with SS, the AFL is killing our game. The worst thing is they are still thinking of making more changes like the bench, zones where you can't enter before the bounce in the centre. They have already but wiped the contest from the game (or heading towards total obliteration)

Alarming figures and yet not surprising.

A few years ago, it was common for most of my social circle to sit down and watch the footy right throughout the weekend. Sometimes we'd even pay to go see a good neutral game.

Aside from watching our own respective teams, there's nobody I know who intently watches the footy anymore. Everybody says the same thing; the game has changed, and it's not for the better.

The footy has now gone in a direction so far away from the grassroots. It is now all about the AFL making a profit wherever they can and not about what's best for the clubs and supporters.
