THE father-son rule has helped the AFL fuel the romanticism between supporters and players of yesteryear. But there's one rivalry the Sydney faithful hopes will not be passed down to the current generation.

There was a time when the mention of the name Liberatore would send the red and white army into a rage, but it's unlikely the Western Bulldogs' Tom Liberatore, son of Tony, will have that effect tomorrow.

That is no slight on Liberatore's ability, for there are big raps on the Bulldogs youngster, but rather a reflection on the difference between his playing style and his father's.

''We're similar in some ways that we both play in the midfield,'' Liberatore senior said. ''Certainly Tom's a lot better user of the footy than I was.''

One major contrast is their role in the side. Whereas Tony became better known for his controversial tagging tactics in the second half of his career, Tom is carving a reputation as a hard-nosed in-and-under ball-winner.

Hear, hear! Quality young men, quality footballers, and (elite) leaders of the future. Both sons of guns and best mates to boot - it's a Bulldogs dream come true. The future is in good hands with these blokes and a few of the others coming through at varying rates of development - Dickson, Roberts, Jong, Redpath, Campbell, Austin, Skinner, JJ - all quality young men who may not have the pedigree, but they can all play. Add our early picks and, perhaps, a couple more smokies from this year's draft and we will be in for some exciting times ahead.

It worked. I love that Wally's son is running around wearing red, white and blue.

One thing I didn't like about that article is the same thing that always perturbs me when other fans (and some Bulldogs) speak of Libba Snr. He used controversial tagging tactics in the later stages of his career, sure, but he bled red, white and blue his entire playing career and gave so much heart, and won the Brownlow in 1990. They always forget to mention that when they're going on about his later tagging methodology.

Snr Libba was excellent in 90 91 period in particular
