I just thought I see peoples views on playing todays footy and the longevity in it.

Just having a browse over some stats I noticed that our current crop of senior players that are about or are close to hanging up the boots are all under 250 games and maybe Murphy may make the 250 but it will take a full season next year and if not another year after that. Giansiracusa may also make it if he can put a full season in next year but I can't see anyone making it to 300.

Current players that have made 300 games are:
Dustin Fletcher 364
Brent Harvey 342
Adam Goodes 313
Simon Black 311

Then:
Luke Power 299
Jude Bolton 297
Matthew Scarlett 281
Matthew Pavlich 275

After this lot it drops down to players hovering the 250 mark and are very close to finishing up.

So will we ever see another 300 gamer for the dogs in todays football?

Some fine players there. Scarlett's not going on past this year but the others will get there.
If the game gets quicker then it's going to be harder for players to have these sorts of careers.

It might be a while before we see another Bulldog player get there.

Very difficult with so many injuries etc. Griffen sitting on 160, but would need say 7 more seasons, which would give him 150 games including missing some through injury and may be some finals as well for some extra games to get there. Six more seasons wouldn't do it. He would be going on to 33 years old, which maybe unlikely in this day and age.

300 is mammoth. I think I read that Brad Green was only the 5th person to play 250 games at the Dee's (only Neitz > 300) - and they are the oldest club in it. We are not going to have another group who come through together (Grant, West, Johnson, Smith) make it to 300 ever again...

200 games is pretty darned impressive let alone 300. I don't think it is the changing game - it is just the nature of playing 300 games in any era.

We're about to head into a new world of free agency which could in fact see contract durations increase as Club's compete for the services of unrestricted agents who would likely be nearing or have passed the 200 game mark.

The rules of the game will evolve, player management will improve and with this the players themselves will adapt. Durable players will continue to exist and through free agency we may well find an increase in 300 gamers. Our next 300 game player may well be a player currently at another Club.

You would need an extremely good run these days to get to 300 games. Anyone reaching 300 games would have to be a regular in the side in his first year - and then continue on year after year barely missing a game.

Cooney for instance - played most games in his first 3 or 4 years - and looked like he would roll along to 300 games with relative ease. In his 7th year - he was playing his 155th game as a 24 year old when he got injured.

Now he looks a 50/50 chance to make 200. It doesn't take much to get knocked off course.

Griffen is at 161 games - but is 26. A good result for him would be 250.

Heppell from the Bombres might be a chance.

If Murph gets two years, he gets to 290 odd. Shattering, he deserves to be in the 300 club.

The longer we stay at Etihad the longer we will wait.

Libba is so hard they could remove the grass and he'd still hit 350.

:D ok he is the exception. Seriously I bet depending how many weeks in a row a team has played there. Or how many days break before Etihad. Two weeks in a row with a short back up and its hard to get up. It would shorten certain careers thats for sure.

It's like world records — someone will do it.

I'm more interested in seeing if Fletcher can hit 400.
