BROWNLOW Medallist Adam Cooney is set to undertake cutting-edge treatment in Germany on the troublesome cracked patella that has jeopardised his career.

Cooney will fly out to the club's European training camp on Sunday, October 28, to visit a specialist in Dusseldorf.

The Dogs are highly encouraged by the progress Cooney made with his knee this year and his form in the last weeks of the season.

The treatment is worth several thousand dollars but will not involve surgery and has the club hoping it might further allow Cooney to train and play to his undoubted potential.

He will join the Dogs after his three-day treatment process at their London base, as they train there before their exhibition game against Port Adelaide.

Cooney is not attending Munich's Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt, the controversial specialist who injects calf blood into patients.

He has helped Geelong's Max Rooke and Richmond's Mark Coughlan and Dylan Grimes with their soft-tissue problems.

The 27-year-old has battled for years with the effects of the cracked patella, which limits his ability to train regularly.

"The treatment has been used by elite athletes around the world in basketball and gridiron and other sports, so we have explored it," football manager James Fantasia said.

Fingers crossed we can see him get back to something like he can be. His form in the Geelong game late in the season was very encouraging, just need to be able to do it for 15+ games a year. Not much detail regarding the treatment though.

Exactly - he's not seeing this guy, who's done this. Ummm irrelevant Ralphy. But interesting to hear they're trying something and sounds like its used by other professional sportspeople so encouraging.

Great the club is trying something new, would be sensational to get get on the track somewhere near his best.
Hope its not to controversial and this is why the Doctor or treatment has not been mentioned.

Don't be ridiculous, thats the way to treat OP not a cracked knee.:D

I don't have any inside knowledge on this, but suspect the treatment is the intriguing use of your own tissues after they are manipulated and refined - I posted this piece on Kobe Bryant's knee treatment (http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7796225/kobe-bryant-dr-chris-renna-regenokine-knee-treatment) awhile ago, but am reposting it for those who are interested.

I would assume with scarce resources the club was wanting to make sure it had something relevant and likely to be effective beyond current management of his injuries before it committed the funds.

It might turn out however, that the treatment he's about to undertake is still experimental but unique, and still a leap of faith. The club may have explored other treatments thoroughly since he first injured his knee in 2008 knowing that they'd not be effective, or having had Cooney rejected by the treating specialist.

With medical treatment at the somewhat experimental, radical, or non-conventional tip of the spectrum (if this current treatment Cooney is undergoing actually is) it's often at the specialists discretion as to whether a candidate might be suitable.
