View Full Version : Scarlett and Mooney get down

Pedro Sanchez

Two handy part time coach appointments... Fair effort to get both Cam Mooney and Matty Scarlett to the club. Hopefully they can have an impact on our guys and give them some much needed confidence to get stuck in.

I think it can only be a positive to get such stars of the game from such a successful club. B-Mac is doing all the right things - just needs to string some decent wins together in season 2013, draft some budding guns later this month and we'll be away.

If true then they are very good appointments. Our team will learn a lot from them as they are both experienced premiership players.

Agreed. Two of my favourite non-dog players.

A game from each of them is etched in mind, when the Cats were crap but each (in different games) really stood up.

Terrific appointments by the club. We are really starting to some structure behind McCartney and I certainly see this as a positive. If Scarlett can improve Roughead as a defender then that is a huge win for us.

Wow.

Kudos to McCartney.

He knows what he wants and he is going out and getting it.

Congrats to the board and whoever has continued to fund the footy department for 2013 and beyond. At least we are using Eades wage rather than just banking it.

Good stuff dogs.

I'm not sure 'Eades wage' comment rings true. I'm sure Eade would have loved to have the resources the club is now supporting McCartney with.

What I mean by that is Eade would be on a lot more than McCartney and rather than banking Eade's wage they are still actively using it, rather than put it to the bottom line.

No doubt Eade would have loved more resources, who knows what might have been if he had them.

My comment wasn't meant to be a dig at Eade at all.

Yes, we went with a bare bones coaching staff in 2012, and we've added some numbers with Hansen, and upgrading Smith, and now the addition of two valuable PT resources.

I think the players will enjoy working with both Mooney and Scarlett

Its hard to imagine that Talia, Markovic, Roughie, Austin, Roberts, Wood, Pearce etc would not benefit from having Scarlett watching them play and offering them some feedback. The impression most get is that Scarlett is not a man who wastes his words, but when he speaks you'd suspect the defenders would listen.

Jones, Grant, Redpath, Cordy etc now have two former CHF of considerable experience to offer feedback.

That announcement has a wow-factor.

Takes me a lot to be excited about specialist coaches, look what we've managed to grab over the last week - 3 Premiership Players including arguably the best full back of the past decade.

Future looks bright out in the west.

Wow. Far out. Draft Scarlet. Make him put the boots on.
When a few of us discussed getting more premiership experience in the box yesterday, was exactly the sort of move had in mind. Blue chip coaches, Blue chip players involved with the club.
Well done!!!!

Only ONE downside ( Overall, I am wrapped so not being negative! ) but like it says, only one day a week, so hoping they work really hard when they come!

But, great news to wake up to. Scarlet in a Bulldogs top....LOVE IT!

But best is all....put your gloves back on folks....He's back.

Agree with the above sentiments. Fantastic to have Scarlett and Mooney on board. Our younger guys will learn a hell of a lot from both of them. Kudos to McCartney and the club for seeking the assistance from some experienced and seasoned finals performers in not only these guys but also the appointments of Hansen and Smith.

The AFL has tipped in more funds for the footy departments of several clubs, but perhaps extra from Gordon.

We have ramped up the footy department with extra coaches and extra fitness staff.

Obviously early days in the coaching careers of these two but would seem a win win, permitting them to put their toe in the water in a coaching capacity. For us, Scarlett and Mooney should bring immense insight to our young list in how to set themselves up and in particular in how to play key defensive and offensive roles whilst bringing a Team first mentality which both appeared to pride themselves on. Further, it should help to bring further support and credibility to Brendan and his Team's agenda as they look to build the Club up.

Very much looking forward to this year's National and PreSeason Drafts now to see the path we take.

I'm not hearing perhaps... I'm hearing he and one other backer tipped in big money to be used by the footy dept.

And as someone else alluded too it wasn't our outgoing Prez.

One of the better news pieces to come out of the dogs in the last few years. Even though its one day a week to have that calibre of player and I think in particular Moons has proven himself in the media this year to have a really good handle on the modern game and he really speaks with passion which I like.

No offense to smith who is a great clubman and love his passion for the dogs but when he commentated on Fox he was poor to say the least and I'm sure to have Scarlett to help him out with the defense will help his/players development no end.

I did read somewhere that he will be putting his own money in and the footy department was is main focus area. I'm pretty sure it was his first press conference.

Great appointments, I must say i always thought Mooney was a bit of an empty head, but I also admit that his special comments on SEN this year have made me change my attitude.

I think it speaks volumes about how B Mac is regarded by players who had long term contact with him. I dont care that its only 1 day a week, if they like it and are successful, there is no reason that cant grow to a full blown assistants role. Matty Scarlett is also playing next season in the Geelong Footy League at his old club of South Barwon, so it is good to see he is giving back to the game after finishing his career at the highest level.

The other positive is more exposure for our sponsors. Having 2 recently retired premiership players wearing the clubs apparel with the sponsors name prominent is a good thing. With our draw & results sponsorship may be more difficult to attract in future, so any additional exposure is great.

We lost Lake but got Scarlett to help out with teh defence (even though it is only coaching them). Mooney will be great for Jones and Cordy, look what he done with Hawkins who is now considered 1 of the best big forwards in teh comp.

That kind of honesty is exactly what we need. When we all focus on one club it's easy to accept shortcomings in players as just being the way they are. They are laconic, or their shortcomings are so glaring that we've just come to ovelook them in our assessment of their value. Somone coming in from a successful culture and casting a critical eye over the people and structures we have can only be a good thing.

Absolutely fantastic from our new president if true - goes to show how much we were treading water in the last few years off the pitch. In a game of inches, a little extra footy dept spending in 2008-2010 might well have made the difference to us winning a premiership - we really didn't do a hell of a lot wrong in that 3 year stretch (running out of steam late in 2010 notwithstanding) aside from botch our 1st round draft picks from 2000-2002 to get that elusive flag.

BMac can have absolutely no complaints whatsoever about the level of support he is getting from the club in terms of footy dept expenditure - fingers crossed that support leads to a successful outcome in 3-5 years' time.

Seems it would be hard for us to muck it up though. I'm no expert, but it appears there will be some pretty good prospects available for us to chose from at 5, 6 and 22.

Great appointments. Very impressed by Mooney's footy brain on radio and the feedback on Scarlett is that whilst he's relatively quiet, his ability to convey his knowledge to team mates is outstanding.

Hopefully they both do well, enjoy it, and are upgraded to full time positions. I would hate to see us 'develop' these two and then lose them to other clubs, as it seems to happen regularly (ie. Cordy).

Along with Hansen, three very impressive coaching recruitments.

Welcome Scarlett and Mooney. Hopefully you will add to the greatness of the club, as others have contributed before you. Ted Whitten, Charlie Sutton, Georgie Bissett, Royce Hart, Chris Grant, Doug Hawkins, Simon Beasley.......

You could take that two ways. Initially I thought he said months ago he was a 200 game great FB. Now he's not sure. It not like when he's gone forward this year he's been Jeremy Cameron like.

He's always been a lovely field kick, but he's a 50-50 proposition at goal even from the goal square. He never misses by much, he just always misses. 12 goals 21 for his career is pretty horrible.
