THE Western Bulldogs want to liquidate a new-age "cryotherapy" company over a $70,000 debt.
The legal stoush comes as AFL football clubs are under intense scrutiny over their training methods.
ONE40Below claims as little as 90 seconds in a "cryosauna" can reduce fatigue, muscle soreness, injury and surgery recovery time and anxiety by lowering skin temperature by about 2C and body temperature by about 0.5 C.
A blast of nitrogen gas at -140C is used to chill a person standing in a circular cubicle, or "cryopod".
The treatment costs up to $55 for 90 seconds, and $10 for each additional 30 seconds, to a maximum of 180 seconds.
Documents lodged with the Supreme Court by the Footscray Football Club, trading as Western Bulldogs, seek to have administrators appointed to the company for failing to pay $71,046.10, as ordered by the Melbourne Magistrates' Court in December.
The debt is said to include about $25,000 in unpaid rent, plus legal costs.
ONE40Below's David Farrington said his company and the club had "a memorandum of understanding and a bit of a handshake agreement" to offset rent at the Whitten Oval against services provided.
He said the club had never paid for using the machines.
The club said it had never received a bill, and there was no agreement to exchange services for rent.
The company's website claims it treats "many elite sporting professionals" and weekend sports enthusiasts, including AFL players, golfers, cricketers, tennis players, netballers, and basketballers "with genuine results and benefits".
Mr Farrington said his company was no longer trading.
