Jason Johannisen will have a big task on Sunday against West Coast, providing run and carry on the expansive grounds of Patersons Stadium - but Western Bulldogs’ Development Coach Ashley Hansen believes the 20-year-old is set for the challenge.

The running defender has come of age this season, providing plenty of rebound from the Bulldogs’ back half and is growing in confidence with every match.

“JJ is starting to really mature as a player, and even just his calmness and his composure to make a decision and assess options down the field and then make the right decision is really important,” Hansen said.

“He is maturing really well JJ,[he’s] still got a lot of work to do but he is really buying into the program at the moment, so hopefully we will see the best of him soon.

“It is going to be even more important this week going over to Subiaco which is a big ground which needs some run and carry.”

A highlight of Johannisen’s standout game against Geelong on Saturday was his ball use – playing out the game with 79.2% disposal efficiency from 24 possessions (18 kicks).

His six rebound 50s and four inside 50s also proved he was a catalyst in a number of the Bulldogs offensive plays.

“It’s so important in that part of the ground that our backs do use the ball well and going at 80% was definitely a highlight,” Hansen said.

“I think his balance between his rebounds from 50 and going inside 50 was up too, which was really good - because as much as he has a defensive job, if he can start our attacks from back there it is going to be really important to the side having success.”

While speed is by far Johannisen’s greatest asset, Hansen said the East Fremantle recruit still needed to hone his defensive craft and remain accountable as part of the back six.

“First and foremost, JJ’s gotta keep working on his one on one defence… he’s going to be on some pretty quick forwards, so [the] defensive side of his game is probably his number one thing he has to focus on at the moment,” he said.

“But on the back of that, as soon as we win the football back [or] we get a turnover, we want him really getting involved and use his leg speed and run and carry out of defence, because it is so important.

“We have a couple of good stoppers in (Dale Morris) Moz and (Liam Picken) Picko down there, so we need his creativity to… give us balance in our back six.”

With just seven games under his belt, Johannisen has made strides in his development this season, and is quickly becoming an integral member in the Bulldogs’ defensive line.

With the excitement about our emerging forwards, it could be easy to overlook JJ's game but it was just as important. That efficiency stat, against a team like Geelong, is really impressive, and he's not afraid to run and create. Terrific game, and nice wrap up.

(side note): does anyone else remember Ash Hansen as one of those guys who specialized in playing his best against us. He seemed to always return from injury just in time to destroy us, but maybe that's just a trick of my memory ?

Like you I kind of overlooked his performance. He's developing really well.

Surely he's close to a Rising Star nomination? Like O'Meara, you generally have to perform well for a few weeks to get the nod and he's had more than one good game.

Soothes the pain of losing Harbrow - JJ seems a better kick already

A couple of those kick-ins were Gilbee-esque. That pass to find Tutt on the run at half forward was an absolute ripper.

Love watching him kick on the run.

Great to see Gilbee at the club as a specialist coach.

JJ is getting better by the week, his running ability and delivery are just what we need in the backline. As GVGjr asked in another thread, has he put on some bulk since round one?

He has established himself in our best 22.

He'd be in our best 15 now and rising fast. His improvement has been phenomenal.

JJ a sneaky chance for a NAB Rising Star nomination this week?? Didn't see any standout performances from any of the other eligible players this weekend and JJ has been very consistent this season.

Vlaustin seems to have had a good game last night and given he's "higher profile" could see him getting the nod this week. JJ should be a lock before te season is out though.

Didn't realise that, sorry. JJ should be in with a very strong chance then.

Hope he gets a rising star nod. He's fast becoming my new favourite player. I really missed Harbrow when he left but JJ is filling the void pretty nicely :). Feels like our rookie strike rate for good player development must be close to the elite catagory by now.

Gee did well in that 2010 rookie draft.

So the recruiting staff pre Macca weren't that bad after all :D

Hmm, our late picks in Schofield, Skinner and Hill were all reasonable punts as well, given they were taken at 74, 87 and 88.

Perhaps knowing we were committed to F/S picks in the first two rounds meant we didnt waste time focussing on the top end talent and spent the whole year concentrating on long shots. It paid off.

Maybe every year we should have one recruiter whose only focus is the tail end of the draft and the rookie draft.

Interesting view point - and I like it.

If we had the money that could be money well spent.
It again all comes down to resources.

Really enjoying watching JJ having a break out season and developing quite nicely, i really now prefer his game to that of Easton Wood if it was up to both fighting for that one spot in the side as the rebounding running defender, seems to have more poise than Easton who really is just a bull in the china shop most of the times with blinkers on. JJ can kick a nice goal on the run as well.

A few times i've seen Easton take a ping from 40 or 50 and just blaze away, hope for the best style.
