In all our etimations, Just how big was our home ground advantage. How many goals was it worth, or how many games a year out you bank on winning?

From going to the Western Oval as a kid, it seemed, a wet and windy fortress and my spiritual football home. Love Danny Southern telling Gardiner, "welcome to the kennel".

Yes, I went to the first game in 1925 on my 25th birthday. It was nearly as good a day as my 112th birthday last year. :D

Yes I did. Very young for the Fitzroy game but I remember we had a bloke called Ian Letcher playing that day. Funny how things come back to you.

My family normally arrived at the ground during the last quarter of the Reserves game and my father would make way for my brother and I to move down to stand behind the people sitting on the seat which circled the ground.

I remember that day for the first and only time actually getting a seat because so few were there because it had rained for so long leading up the game.

And all you ever see is Leigh Matthews breaking the post. I loved the little post they put up to replace it - it was from the Little League.
