Ditto. I think he's being a little forgotten. Everyone's so excited by Libba, Macrae etc, but I'm excited to see Clay come on.

Is that a good idea? Hamstring ACL repairs take 12 months for the graft to completely heal and turn from tendon to ligament...

No need to rush, let him do his 12 months and play it safe.. I'm a massive clay fan and would like to see him back but a couple of months is worth the wait.

SlimPickens

His tendon will never turn into a ligament but will simply act as a ligamentous structure. Each case is different but Clay hasn't missed a beat in his rehab. The Intraclub gives him a good run around in a controlled environment, I have no problem with Clay playing this week.

As a side a traditional ACL graft takes roughly 6 months to reach max strength. This was the time frame in the AFL until David Schwarzt decided to rip his knee in half 3 or 4 time in quick succession.

Thanks Slim, great to hear re Clay - really looking forward to him returning and seeing what role we look to play him in this year.

Overall the injury list looks very good for this time of year and we should have a full squad available in the early stages of the season which is great news for competition for spots in the side.

Doc Larkins says: The Bulldogs are also in good shape with their injury list. Grant is ahead with his return to training but will need protection for up to two more weeks. - 26/3

From Bulldogs Medical Services Manager Andrew McKenzie,

Jarrad Grant is one step closer to his football return, after Western Bulldogs medical staff today gave him the all clear to progress to the next level of his rehabilitation program.
The forward injured his foot in January but Medical Services Manager Andrew McKenzie said Grant received the best possible news after seeing a specialist on Friday.

“Jarrad was reviewed by the specialist on Friday and had scans and they have come back really good,” McKenzie said.
“The surgeon was happy with how he recovered, he’s given him the all clear to keep progressing – he’s running outside and he’s feeling great at the moment.”
Another positive from the weekend was Ryan Griffen who played his first game for the Bulldogs this season, and got through unscathed.
“Ryan got through the game as we had hoped, the amount of time he played is what we were looking for,” he said.
“He’s come in today feeling really good so we are in a positive place with him.”
Tom Liberatore suffered some cramping against North Melbourne on Sunday but McKenzie said the soreness had subsided today.
“Tom had some soreness during the game but that’s cleared up today, he’s come in really well,” he said.
“He will train on Wednesday and be available this week.”
A heavy tackle also saw Koby Stevens receive a knock and the midfielder will be monitored throughout the week.
“Koby had a heavy tackle that he got hurt with, he had some whiplash,” he said.
“The doctors have been monitoring him and we expect that he will be available to play.”

How has Grant gone from being 1-2 weeks away on 19/3 to 5-6 weeks away on 1/4?

Doesn't make sense given he has started running.

I guess you have to be pretty careful with these foot injuries. By "running outside", I'm guessing that means he's run a couple laps. Will take a while to build into full training probably.

Spoke to Sam Darley and got some injury info.

Darley had been playing a few weeks with pain in his stomach, played through it but eventually they had a look and he had a twisted bowel, so is still recovering from that.

The club did have gastro or a sickness like it at some point recently which could explain the mysterious non playing of Bontempelli.

And Smith and Howard both had a bout of salmonella and lost a considerable amount of weight very quickly thus not playing this week as they recuperate.

And Roughead is reported as havin a dislocated shoulder and being out for 6-8 weeks on twitter.

Thanks Soupaman - does anyone know if Smith & Howard live in same shared household? Food poisoning not good - hopefully not the Pound Cafe. Perhaps food handling training of players required, if not not already in place.

Sad about Roughhead. Hope Talia and/or Roberts get a go. Young perhaps too - he played alright in the 2 qtrs I saw of VFL match today however I think he is not as tall.

Salmonella can be horrendous - never felt anywhere as sick as I did when I had a bout of it back in 2005, but it doesn't hit everyone so hard. Still, Smith and Howard might take awhile to get back some strength. Is Darley's 'twisted bowel' similar to what Hargrave had early on? Finally, pretty amazing of Roughead to play through that injury.

Andrew McKenzie said Roughy had surgery Monday night and will be out for 8 weeks.
Josh Prudden will miss a month after he sustained a knee injury when playing for the Bulldogs' VFL team on Saturday.
"There is a low-grade injury to his MCL and some bone bruising – it should settle down but he will miss four weeks," McKenzie said.

INJURY UPDATE: Good news for Dale Morris, scans have cleared him of any major damage to his left ankle.

Scans have cleared defender Dale Morris of any major damage to his left ankle after receiving a knock in the 27 point win against the Giants yesterday.

Morris collided with Giants' Will Hoskin-Elliot in the first quarter and was subsequently subbed off.

Morris did however sustain a sprain to his ankle and will be monitored closely over the coming week.

Grant set for football return

Jarrad Grant is expected to make his football return this weekend in the VFL, Medical Services Manager Andrew McKenzie says, in what will be the forward’s first game for 2014.

The 24-year-old has been sidelined for weeks with a foot fracture but has been given the all clear to return to competitive football ahead of round six for the Footscray Bulldogs.
“Jarrad has completed his full rehab, he’s back into the training group and we are looking forward to seeing him play in the VFL this week,” McKenzie said.

McKenzie said the positives continued in the Bulldogs’ medical room this week, reporting a clean bill of health from the weekend’s games.
“The good news is [on] Saturday we had no injuries so the guys have come in well today,” he said.
Jordan Roughead has also made strides in his rehabilitation program after requiring shoulder surgery as a result of an injury endured in round three against Richmond.

“Jordan’s program is going really well, he’s outside training, he’s in the weights room going well,” he said.
“We’ve got to tick off with the specialist next week and hopefully that is positive news.”

The Bulldogs also expects Josh Prudden to return from a knee injury after the AFL and VFL bye in a fortnight’s time.
“Josh has been tracking well and with the bye next week we are looking to take that time to really build him up and he will return following the bye,” he said.

Tory Dickson will meet with a specialist tomorrow after injuring his pectoral muscle in the Western Bulldogs 16-point win over Melbourne on Saturday at the MCG.

Medical Services Manager Andrew McKenzie said the forward will have a clearer picture tomorrow where the appropriate course of action will be determined.

“Tory has ruptured his pec muscle, that will need a repair so he’s going in to see the surgeon tomorrow,” McKenzie said.

A calf injury troubled Tom Williams during Saturday night’s clash against the Demons and McKenzie said scans this afternoon will determine the full extent of the injury .

“Tom tightened up in his calf in the second quarter and he was taken off to be assessed by the doctor,” he said.
“He looked reasonable when he was assessed, so we were able to strap him up to support the area and he managed to play out the game.

“Tom’s calf is still tight but it hasn’t aggravated any further and he came into recovery yesterday and he felt reasonably good.
“We are getting some scans on him this afternoon to see what has happened.”
I
n the VFL, Jarrad Grant made a successful return to football for the Footscray Bulldogs and McKenzie said he pulled up well.
“Jarrad’s come in well, he’s happy to get back and get playing again,” he said.
“He’s got some usual soreness which is expected but he’s feeling really good.”

Defender Matt Fuller, however, endured a minor shoulder complaint during Footscray’s clash against Sandringham and will be monitored throughout the week.

“Matt Fuller he aggravated his shoulder during the game, he managed to play on with it reasonably comfortably,” he said.
“He’s come in today and he’s a little bit sore, so we will see how he goes over the week and we will take it from there.”

Dickson had surgery to reattach the pectoral major muscle torn from his left shoulder. He is likely to miss 8-10 weeks.

Williams played on with a right calf strain but may now miss 3-4 weeks.

Roughead has progressed well and is now in week six after an AC joint reconstruction. He will probably train full pace this week. - 14/5

Forward Tory Dickson will miss up to 8-10 weeks after having surgery to repair his left pectoral major muscle on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old sustained the injury in the second quarter of last Saturday night’s win against Melbourne, and was subbed off prior to half time.
Surgery to mend Dickson’s pectoral muscle was considered successful, and will allow the forward to begin rehabilitating the injury from next week.

Tom Williams received favourable results from a scan on Monday, suffering just a slight strain to his right calf that will be monitored after returning from the bye weekend.
After his calf pulled up tight in the second quarter, Williams played an integral part in last week’s win with three goals, two of which were in the second half.

Jordan Roughead looks set to resume full training this week, following rehabilitation to an AC injury which has seen the key defender sidelined since Round 3 this season.

From Bulldogs Medical Services Manager Andrew McKenzie

Gritty midfielder Clay Smith will undergo scans late Monday after injuring his AC joint during Sunday’s match against the Gold Coast.Smith in his first game back in the senior team from an ACL repair in July last year, received a heavy knock to his right shoulder in a marking contest, yet bravely continued playing.

Western Bulldogs Medical Services Manager Andrew McKenzie said the Club would learn more of Smith’s fate in the next 24 hours.
“Clay had a direct blow to the right shoulder in the third quarter, he did manage to play through the game,” McKenzie said.
“We’ve had to send him off for scans and we’ll get a report on him later.”

Also in his first game back from a lengthy absence, key defender Jordan Roughead has recovered well, reporting no significant soreness to his existing AC injury.

“He’s pulled-up very well considering his return for the first time on the weekend,” McKenzie said.
Tom Williams will be monitored through the training week ahead of Sunday’s round eleven match against Fremantle as he rehabilitates a minor calf strain from the Bulldogs’ round eight win over Melbourne.

“Tom’s been training fine, he’ll be in training this week,” McKenzie said.
“We’ll just have to assess how he goes later in the week.”
Meanwhile Josh Prudden has incurred another setback in his rehabilitation from a knee injury earlier in the year.
“Unfortunately Josh did injure his hamstring in a training session last week and it looks like he’ll miss a few weeks with that,” said McKenzie.

Clay Smith is scheduled for surgery this afternoon and will miss up to two months of football after injuring his AC joint against Gold Coast on Sunday.
Smith received a heavy knock to his right shoulder in a marking contest in the third quarter, but managed to play out the game.
Western Bulldogs Medical Services Manager Andrew McKenzie said Smith would undergo an AC repair, like Jordan Roughead before him.
“Clay will have surgery this afternoon after scans yesterday revealed some damage to his right AC joint,” McKenzie said.
“The procedure is not dissimilar to Jordan Roughead’s, who was able to make a fairly swift recovery, with some meticulous rehabilitation.”
“Clay is a determined young man, and will approach his recovery with the same professionalism he did with his recent ACL injury.”

I keep reading that it was in a marking contest but I would have thought it was in the ground level contest with O'Meara, but perhaps I am mistaken?

Shocking luck to do an AC joint first game back. This year is almost a complete write-off for him now. Hopefully he can get in a couple of games at the end of the season and build towards 2015.:(

Shaun Higgins has been cleared of any injury, while medical staff will continue to monitor Matthew Boyd’s hamstring tightness as the Western Bulldogs prepare to face Collingwood on Sunday afternoon.
Higgins came from the field late in the final term after taking a heavy knock to his abdomen in a marking contest with Brisbane ruckman Stefan Martin.
LATEST INJURY LIST: View the complete Western Bulldogs Injury List as of Tuesday, 10 June 2014. (http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/injury-news)
Western Bulldogs Medical Services Manager Andrew McKenzie said despite initial concerns, Higgins has emerged ultimately unscathed from the incident.
“The doctors assessed [Higgins] and monitored him throughout the game, and he was a little bit sore following, but over the night and the next day at injury clinic he pulled up really well and hasn’t missed a beat since then,” said McKenzie.
“He’s available to train this week, and will be available to play.”
Meanwhile Matthew Boyd will continue to be managed conservatively, as the veteran midfielder works his way towards a return form hamstring tightness after two matches on the sidelines.
“Matt still had some soreness in his hamstring at the end of training last week, so we’ve taken a cautious approach with him,” McKenzie said.

“He’ll train this Thursday and we’ll assess him after the session.”
In the VFL, half-back Daniel Pearce has made his match return from a medial collateral ligament knee injury initially incurred during a pre-season match.
“Daniel played his first game back, played 70 per cent game time and got through really well, so we’re very pleased with where he is at,” McKenzie said.

From website:

The Western Bulldogs have emerged from the weekend’s AFL and VFL games without any major injuries to report, Medical Services Manager Andrew McKenzie says.“It’s been a good week, no majors out of the AFL or VFL teams this week,” McKenzie said.
In further positive news, Club medical staff will assess Ryan Griffen during Thursday’s main training session, after his back complaint has begun to settle.
“Griffen’s back has settled down and he’s done some running today and some football work,” he said.
“We will monitor him throughout the week and look to do training on Thursday and assess him from there.
“We are optimistic about him.”
Fellow veteran Adam Cooney, however, will spend at least one more week on the sidelines – although he is progressing through his rehabilitation plan as planned.
“Cooney’s hamstring has settled down, he has started running - he will miss this week and we will assess him from there and see how he’s progressing,” he said.
The Club will have more information on Jordan Roughead after he receives a medical review tomorrow.
“Roughead’s review is tomorrow, we will know more from that review and can update further.”

Ryan Griffen is likely to return to the Bulldogs side this weekend against Essendon after illness forced him to withdraw from last week’s game in Cairns, Medical Services Manager Andrew McKenzie says.

“Ryan just had a gut complaint prior to the game and he was monitored by the doctors over a period of time and just thought he wasn’t going to be right to be able to play the game,” McKenzie said.

“Since then he’s actually improved a lot, and he’s come back and he’s been training today so he will be back up and going this week.”

Adam Cooney is another experienced player who is in the mix to return against Essendon on Sunday, pending fitness tests at training this week.

“Adam has been tracking really well, he’s got through some really quick speed running on the weekend and he will be a test to train this week and test his availability,” he said.

After injuring his pectoral muscle in round eight against Melbourne, Tory Dickson has continued to increase his training load and could be in line to return to football as soon as this weekend.

“Tory has also been out for a little while, he’s been building his strength over the last month, that’s coming along well,” he said.

“He’s a test to play this week to so he needs to get through another training session and we’ll assess him then.”

Josh Prudden injured his knee against Box Hill Hawks in the VFL, and will be also closely monitored this week.

“He landed on his knee awkwardly during the game but he was able to play on for a little while,” McKenzie said.

“We’ve assessed him over the last couple of days, we are just letting things settle down and we will do some more tests over the week and see how it goes.”

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-07-22/smiths-acl-fears-realised

THE WESTERN BULLDOGS' worst fears have been realised with scans confirming midfielder Clay Smith has ruptured the ACL in his right knee for the second time in 12 months.

The promising 21-year-old sustained the injury in the VFL on Sunday during the third quarter of Footscray's 53-point win over Essendon at Whitten Oval.

The club has opted for a traditional reconstruction, instead of a LARS procedure, with surgery to take place over the next few days.

"It has been confirmed with MRI (scan) that (Clay) has injured his ACL – he has had a specialist review yesterday and it was confirmed that he will need that repaired again." said club medical services manager Andrew McKenzie.

It has been a frustrating 12 months for Smith, who first ruptured his ACL against the Bombers in round 16 of the 2013 AFL season.

In April, he and teammate Christian Howard contracted salmonella poisoning, and then in the only senior appearance since his reconstruction, Smith injured his AC joint in the round 10 clash with Gold Coast, sidelining him for several weeks.

Smith has played 31 senior games since being taken with pick 17 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft.

The news comes just a day after a serious foot injury ended the season of fellow young gun Mitch Wallis.

Scans revealed that the 21-year-old had suffered a break in the fifth metatarsal bone in his foot against Essendon on the weekend, with the recuperation period expected to take at least six weeks.

Real shame about both Wallis and Smith. Both first round draft picks, Smith's career probably over.

We can't take a trick.

Yeah a strange thing to say .. Royal did two knees before he came to us and played heaps if games and that was when knee ops weren't as good as now.. Redpath also has done a knee before he came to us, plenty if knees done and still have successful careers

I was right in front of the incident and my heart sank......I know it's not much but I'm going to write a letter to Clay supporting him with his rehab. He is one of my favourite players and I just hope this is his run of bad luck will be over after this one. I think he will become a beloved club champion if he can only stay on the park.

That's a good idea Josie, I'm sure Clay will appreciate it.

Anthony Morabito is a case in point. If we can keep Tom Williams on the list for 9+ years while injured for half of it, due to the potential upside, then we can afford the same support to Clay.

Clay Smith is one of the most exciting players I've seen in a few years at the dogs, just incredibly amazing in the VFL, wish he could get a good run at it because once he cements himself in the AFL there won't be another hard nut like him going around.

Wallis is a bigger loss than we think as well, his closing down of Heppell and capability to still get out a handball in the heat is a big plus. I think he is under rated.
If he didn't get injured we win that game.

Clay Smith will now go in for his second knee reco and will have a revision traditional procedure using hamstring graft tendons from his opposite leg.

Agree that Wallis's injury hurt us in the last quarter, after a slow start he did great job on Heppell.

Agree - considering players like Harvey and Ablett do nothing but complain about close checking midfielders.

Have heard from a Leongatha local that Heppell is a great bloke, comes back to his old club and gives up his time. Jarryd Roughhead on the other hand is apparently full of himself. Fortunately Jordan doesn't seem to be like his cousin.

Certainly a cracker of a footballer but also sounds like a decent sort of bloke, heard him on the radio last week and he seemed quite grounded and quite modest.
I know we have bigger gaps to fill and would never happen but would love him at the Dogs.

WB website still hasn't updated the injury list from two weeks ago and the AFL injury list shows per post number 168. That is what I call poor.

Edit: Website now updated. Fuller out for the season as well.

Easton Wood has been ruled out for the remainder of the season, after sustaining a broken hand against St Kilda on Sunday.

The 24-year-old injured his right hand in the final term in a marking contest, and scans last night revealed a fracture.

Club Medical Services Manager Andrew McKenzie said Wood will have surgery later today to stabilise the area, and will now look towards returning fit for pre-season training.

While it's a big shame for Easton I guess it's pleasing it's not another soft tissue injury. His body seems to be really holding up now which is great.

Hopefully Tommy Young can really show something these last 3 weeks.

Tom Campbell was substituted in the second term against Sydney on Sunday with concussion but the 22-year-old is expected to be available this weekend
Medical Services Manager Andrew McKenzie said the versatile tall was recovering well after receiving a knock to the head and having his sight momentarily impaired.
“Tom got a hit to the head during the game, there was a bit of concern due to some blurred vision and that being related to some concussion signs,” McKenzie said.
“The doctor did review and thought it was best that they sub him out of the game and take that cautious approach.
“Consequently he has pulled up quite well and he is improving and he will be monitored over the week and will be expected to play.”
Fellow talls Liam Jones and Jack Redpath were also late withdrawals to the Footscray Bulldogs side in the VFL, citing soreness.
“Both Liam and Jack had slight niggles from the previous game, we decided it was in their best interest to have the week off,” he said.
“They will be back into full training this week and again expected to line up.”
Defender Easton Wood has successfully undergone surgery to rehabilitate his fractured hand and is recovering as predicted.
“Easton has had a pin put into his hand and the surgery went really well,” he said.
“He’s feeling great now and getting along and into his rehab so he’s going fantastic.”
