View Full Version : Draftee turned Biggest Interstate Sook

I will be clearer now, name the players from VFL/AFL history that were just mopey sooks at their draft club. For example, Jeff White was such a sook at Freo and seemed to spend every second counting down until a return to Victoria, with seemingly no regard for the club who invested in him.

I'm sure we've had a few, I think Nat Brown was originally from Richmond before Bendigo. :)

Edit: To play for another club, not personal, health and/or family issues.

Would you count Nathan Buckley in there?

Couldn't get out of Brisbane soon enough.

Good call... I would. And the quote of leaving to play in premierships trumps Brown's quotes when leaving us. :)

Jon Riley.

Came over from SA in 1984(?) Big name recruit. We even gave him a car as a signing on bonus. He played one game, jumped on the car and drove it back to Adelaide. We never heard from him again.

I think a few of the indigenous players have found it hard to cope with the big smoke.

Does that make them different from white players from the country who have found it hard to cope with the big smoke?

Yes, mainly due to cultural differences. Should not be under estimated.

Liam Jurrah, sitting in a cell with many members of his extended family, says yes.
For Zeph Skinner and many others, English is not their first language. Add that to weather, and a myriad of cultural complexities, you would have to say it's a bit tougher.

Most of Brendan Goddard's family are in jail.

It seems a bit ridiculous to be potting white kids for being Mummy's boy's but giving everyone else a leave pass. Especially when no one knows the real cultural background of any of them.

Of Course not - Melbourne/Sydney is the Big Smoke or don't you understand?

Not sure why you are asking me these questions. This thread is a fun thread not an indepth analysis of why players leave.

I watch him play (almost) weekly for East Fremantle. Average player at best now.

True, but he didn't even last the preseason.

Tony Lockett still struggles with it now, hence nobody's seen him for years.

Andrew Purser ?

No way known. Polly was enormous for us. Joined us as a young, undersized ruckman in a strong era and was rarely beaten. His body took a battering as a result. I think he was out of work after the '87 stock-market crash and decided to go home.

I don't believe he played another game of senior footy after he left WO. Albeit I think he did a pre-season with West Perth after having his arm twisted.

Post retirement, I believe he's been a scout for us, attends games and is Bulldogs through and through.

Yep surely one of our best rucks over the past 30 years (and we've had some good ones!) Won the Sutton medal too I think...

A couple of years ago Malthouse rated him the best ruckman he has coached.
