View Full Version : Who to blame

Time for some light-hearted banter. Clearly this is the new logos fault - everything was going swimmingly under the careful stewardship of robo-dog.

Or maybe it was the cheersquad's fault? Every time they make a banner with the word ''master'' in it, everything goes pear-shaped.

Can we blame the boot-studder as well?

I was thinking about this earlier, unlike the "Up yours Oakley" campaign we really don't have anyone to vent our anger at.
If we blame Griff, stiff bickies he is most likely gone and If we blame Macca, stiff bickies he has gone.
We could blame Stinky and Gordo but they are the ones who are most likely going to have to put the pieces back into place.
It's a real shit for T-shirt and memorabilia sales.

I posted this on my Footscray page...

While we are not a successful club, I like to consider us a (in most parts) proud club. The last few days have been shameful. Whenever something goes wrong, it can be easy to fall into the trap of automatically thinking ‘who was in the wrong/right?’ Unfortunately for us, I believe all major parties involved are in the wrong to some degree.
Ryan Griffen- I do appreciate that players sometimes need to stand up to the coach for the best of the club, however the delivery was terrible. Griffen was always a reluctant leader and how he handled this makes that glaring. He goes into the review meeting to represent the apparent enormous concerns of the playing group. He then meekly backs down, virtually saving McCartney’s job. A couple of weeks later, he again goes to water and gets the coach sacked.
Brendan McCartney - prefer not to call someone by their nickname post sacking) whatever the situation lost a very large chunk of the playing group. I think a good coach balances constructive feedback and maintaining positive relationships, especially one who is all about education. I am very wary of people who sell programs and I think McCartney fits into this category. While it is not all about wins and losses, it’s a massive mark against his name. He was also the one to anoint the reluctant leader who both saved and got him sack in the space of a fortnight.
Peter Gordon- I love the guy, a real Footscray man in charge and that’s great however going from baking Griffen to McCartney’s presser in the space of about 12 hours wasn't his greatest moment. I really feel for him as he was let down greatly by Griffen as a representative of the playing group.
Simon Garlick- Time for him to stand up.

What this random guy on the Internet thinks we should do next…
I’m sure a few of you have heard about how the Chinese link crisis to opportunity. I think a crisis is best avoided however we might as well make something out of this mess.
The divisive group- As mentioned, whether or not sacking McCartney was the right decision or not, the means to the end was wrong (and I believe self-serving). Retaining Griffen would at best messy. He would lose the captaincy and head into free agency land. At 28 I see this as a blessing in disguise. If we do the right things, we should win long term.
The forensic team at Whitten Oval probably isn’t in the best shape but I believe we need to identify the divisive members of the group so this does not happen again. E
Let’s forget trading them for players. They won’t come, not yet. Sure Lonergan was loyal but the offer we put in front of him was truly once in a lifetime. He mentioned the turmoil was massive part of why he rejected us. Lets get as many good picks as we can. Our drafting is hot at the moment, we need it to continue.

Leadership and PR-
In one of our club’s darkest hours, we need guys who bleed red, white and blue front and square. I would go with Bobby and Morris as co-captains. I believe they compliment each other and would help share the load going into retirement. In a year or two hopefully one of our younger guys will be ready to lead.
PR wise as much as I love him I think there’s a bit of Gordon fatigue. I would love to see Granty, Bobby and Morris front and square.

The coach-
Get a good one please? As I mentioned earlier, I am over guys selling programs and great PowerPoint presentations. Look at some of the successful coaches at the moment. Clarkson, Hinkley, the Scotts and Lyon. A bit rough around the edges, but they are real.
I really rate the lost art of a coach actually coaching their own side. Clarkson won premierships at SANFL level before entering the AFL ranks. I am not necessarily saying Nathan Bassett but I definitely like his prototype.

The kids-
It needs to be all about them. The leadership, the coaching and the trading. As I mentioned earlier, we won’t get any players to the club this trade period unless we offer crazy amounts. Lets get as many picks as possible.
Bonts, Stringer, Macrae, Libba, Dahl and Hrovat. It’s a great group of kids.
As hard as it is, I think it's massive we all try to stick with the club. Get angry, think of Bonts, rant to loved ones who don't really care, think of Bonts, get blocked by my new swear filter but stick with us. I am a bit stuck as to why but I guess you have your reasons if you have made it this far.
If you have made it this far, thank you for reading/sorry for wasting your time. I am off to do something more fitting of this beautiful day.
