FOOTBALL’S most expensive appendix was removed in emergency surgery on Wednesday night as Tom Boyd’s dramatic life as a Western Bulldog continued.
The Dogs $7 million man was at home in Ringwood with his parents when he reported feeling sick in the stomach.
Rather than make a fuss with his new club, Boyd’s mum Anita took him to their local GP who quickly suggested he should head to the nearby hospital.
It was on this journey that the former No.1 pick figured he should at least let the Dogs know about his medical drama.
You can imagine the reaction from the club’s medical team when told someone working the late shift at an Eastern suburbs emergency ward was going to be slicing open their prized recruit.
Mrs Boyd was politely informed to turn the car around and head immediately to the Epworth Hospital in Richmond where the Bulldogs medical team were waiting anxiously.
We can report the surgery was a success and with a two-week recovery period, Boyd will be clear to go for the start of pre-season training.

It's fair to say it's been an eventful off season. Good luck to Tom for a healthy & speedy recovery ... and from a selfish point of view, good to have it happen now!

If he can't stand up to a small bout of appendicitis how can he be expected to live up to his contract.

Waste of cash.

Lucky he was home with his mum when it happened! Imagine if he'd been languishing in some GWS share house… Shudder to think...

do we get a discount as not all the parts we ordered have arrived?

How can this not have been picked up in his medical! What a joke the bulldogs are! Can't they do anything right! Whatever happened to due diligence! This is what happens when a lowly club gets ideas above its station! Etc etc, ( insert sarcasm emoticon)

I thought for 7 mill he would have the skill to remove his own appendix

Can we bronze it and display it? (Ted reference)

Whilst they were at it they should have removed any other superfluous body parts (tonsils, wisdom teeth, etc) and replaced them with cybernetic implants to make him the ultimate footballing machine.

Sell it to Griffen to replace the heart he's missing.....

Seems it a bit paranoid not to let him use the public system. Pretty routine procedure & should recover fine.

Dramatic life as a western bulldog ?
He has signed a paper and had his appendix out , what's dramatic about it?
Sounds like this writer watches too much home and away.

Dave Matthews insisted the appendix was not to be removed
" under no circumstances"

Smart lad to call the club.

Smart lad to call the club.

Stuns me how many don't do it when they hit strife.

In any line of work, the first thing you do when something goes wrong is let someone up the food chain know, so that they can start resolving it ASAP. If you stuff around and try and hide stuff until its too late you don't get that support.

Clearly, you have never been to Maroondah Hospital.

Wait - is this all a ruse for our medical staff to keep the appendix, so that we have his DNA?

It all makes sense now... the partnership with VU, leading "sports" scientists on site.. we're front loading Boyd's contract so we can add multiple Boyds to our list

This cloning thing will give us a massive advantage.

Three Boyds, 5 Bontis, 6 Macraes, 7 Stringers and a few Libbas and Dahlhauses = guaranteed premierships. No need for a backline, the ball will never get down there.

Glory boy.

Do you think Brett Kirk would have phoned the Swans if his appendix hurt? He probably would have just ripped it out himself and gutted out 30 touches the next day.

I think we should play his appendix in the midfield.

Hush down Jeemak . We don't want Robbo reading this and giving him a theme for his next roll of toilet paper. :D

Good luck to Tom and his recovery. Now for him to have a great pre season and to come out ready to go by Round 1.

Hows he supposed to play with an appendix!?

And this means that Griffen must have had a heart attack.

On a serious note, I was disappointed in the private health insurance angle that crept into the article. It was a bit like something you'd expect to read in a "family club" article, not a WB article.

We can't just play every appendix through the middle. If Appendix Boyd’s talents are as a forward, we would be mad not to keep him up front, it'll straighten up his whole internal organ structure.

On seven million, a responsible person uses private health care so someone of lesser means can have that public bed.
