Dogs head into Christmas break with near full list in trainingEarly signs suggest the Bulldogs are on track to have close to a full playing list available for round one, with several players making promising starts to their preseason campaigns after post-season surgeries.

Jordan Roughead and Fletcher Roberts both underwent shoulder reconstructions at the conclusion of the season, and have resumed training.

Speaking with the Herald Sun, General Manager of Football Graham Lowe said he was confident they would be able to fulfil the majority of their pre-season obligations.

“Jordan and Fletcher are progressing well from their post-season shoulder surgeries and have resumed training. Both were able to complete good levels of endurance-based work through the early stages of their rehabilitation, which will hold them in good stead for the remainder of the pre-season program.”

Roughead injured his shoulder in the round three win against Richmond and battled bravely through the season, missing just two games, and averaging 11 disposals at 82.5 per cent.

Roberts spent most of the year in the VFL honing his defensive craft, but starred late in the year up forward with a match-winning performance in the final round, kicking a goal from outside 50m after the siren to secure a home final.

2013 draftee Matt Fuller and Clay Smith were the other two Bulldogs to undergo post-season surgery.

“Matt Fuller who also had post-season shoulder surgery is not too far behind and is on schedule to commence full-contact training next week,” Lowe said.

At this stage, Smith will be the only Bulldog not in full training after Christmas, after an ACL injury sidelined him for the second half of the season.

“Clay Smith is tracking well in his recovery from an ACL repair back in July. He has started straight line running, and most importantly for us, he is pulling up well from those sessions.”

The Bulldogs playing group will break on 19 December for the Christmas period, and will resume back training early in January.

Perhaps Roughead may have declared himself fit to play each week, apparently he is viewed as a leadership type at the club - this is probably evidence of why he is. He put the team ahead of his own pain.

I think he's only done about 1 pre-season with us that didn't involve limited work due to his shoulders.
You would think that would limit the guys chances to develop his body somewhat.

Clay Smith on the up as he returns from injury (http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/2015-01-13/clay-on-the-up)

Western Bulldogs midfielder Clay Smith is back on the training track after challenging 18 months of injury setbacks.

After returning to football in April last year after Smith ruptured the ACL in his right knee, he then injured the AC joint in his shoulder in his return to the senior side in round 10 and two months later reinjured his ACL in a VFL match.

Smith, now in his 25th week of rehabilitation since injuring his ACL, has completed four weeks of high end speed training and has now commenced straight line football skills.

Bulldogs Head Physiotherapist Chris Bell says the way he has conducted himself is a credit to the 21-year-old.

“He has been incredibly diligent, focused and enthusiastic towards his rehabilitation.

“Clay continues to absolutely apply himself to every aspect of his rehab, always pushing the boundaries of his training restrictions, and striving for excellence in the gym and on the track.”

Smith recently finished fourth in the Club’s two kilometre time trial and is set to start controlled football training in early February.

“Clay has embraced the physical and mental challenges of being in long term rehab, and continues to attack each day with enthusiasm and ferocity.”

Good news on Smith but he shouldn't be rushed back, might be best if he just builds slowly in the VFL starting from about mid season at the earliest.

He is a top extractor in the middle and at stoppages, he has shown he can play other positions as well, particularly in the forward line. There certainly is a place for him in our best 22 when he is cherry ripe to go again.

People have forgotten how good this kid was tracking. One of the best performed from his draft up to his injuries but just had a shocking run of luck. Might be a big call but I reckon he'd be our second best mid behind Libba right now if he never suffered that first ACL. Make no mistake though he will be back, agree that we shouldn't rush him though.

Cordy to miss start of season (http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/2015-01-23/young-dogs-shoulder-blow)

Western Bulldogs father-son recruit Zaine Cordy will miss the start of the 2015 season after having a shoulder reconstruction.

The 18-year-old defender, who arrived at the Bulldogs via pick No.64 in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft, had experienced discomfort during his first pre-season and the club decided it was better for him to receive immediate treatment to fix the issue.

The rehab period is expected to be at least four months, with the Dogs hopeful he will resume full training in the early part of the season.

"Zaine had some instability in his left shoulder when he was drafted and after a short period rehabilitating the area, the club decided that to avoid further damage to the shoulder, the best approach was to intervene surgically," the Dogs’ general manager of football Graham Lowe told AFL.com.au.

"As with all of our younger players, we make these decisions with a view to the long-term and we look forward to Zaine getting back to full training in the early parts of the season."

Cordy, the younger brother of Ayce - who has played 20 games for the Bulldogs - is a promising defender who is expected to eventually play on talls and smalls.

Fremantle made a bid for him under the father-son bidding system but the Dogs were able to secure him at pick No.64.

The Bulldogs were aware his shoulder would need some treatment when he was drafted and have been working through the options since he joined the club.

Cordy couldn’t attend the club's annual general meeting on Thursday night at Whitten Oval due to the operation as new coach Luke Beveridge unveiled a long list of recruits including Tom Boyd, Toby McLean and Shane Biggs.

The Bulldogs have most of their list training, with Fletcher Roberts still recovering from a shoulder reconstruction and Clay Smith on the road back after a knee reconstruction last season. Big man Tom Campbell remains on a running program.

Beveridge, who was appointed coach in November, told members at the AGM the club would not be looking in the rear view mirror as the group strove to become a force in the game.

Could certainly explain why we got him cheaper than expected. If we were aware there were shoulder issues prior to drafting then other clubs did too. Those clubs would've also looked at Ayce and seen a long line of shoulder problems as being a possible outcome and re-ranked Zaine accordingly.

Bulldogs midfielder Tom Liberatore injures knee, likely to miss season (http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/bulldogs-midfielder-tom-liberatore-injures-knee-likely-to-miss-season-20150228-13ro5y.html)http://www.theage.com.au/content/dam/images/1/3/r/o/q/2/image.related.articleLeadNarrow.300x0.13ro5y.png/1425126980473.jpg

One reigning club best and fairest has already had his season ended, and another faces the same grim news.

Both West Coast defender Eric Mackenzie and Western Bulldogs midfielder Tom Liberatore suffered awkward falls which marred the opening weekend of the NAB Challenge.

Liberatore hobbled off the Whitten Oval during the first quarter of Saturday's clash with Richmond, grimacing after injuring his knee during an attempted tackle by Tiger Tyone Vickery.

Dogs coach Luke Beverdige said the club was bracing for a likely knee reconstruction, the result of a suspected torn anterior cruciate ligament.

"He'll need a scan tomorrow, but it doesn't look good at the moment," Beveridge said after the match.

"If there's a remote chance obviously we're hoping for it, but obviously it doesn't look good."

Young Western Bulldogs midfielder Nathan Hrovat spent Saturday night in hospital with breathing difficulties after breaking a rib in the team's opening NAB Challenge game.

The Bulldogs do not have a NAB Challenge game this week but the small running player will miss the Dogs' next game on March 14. However, he could be available for NAB Challenge round three and then for round one of the season proper.

Hrovat came off the ground and mentioned to the Doctors he couldn't breathe. Just as he was given an Inhaler Libba went down clutching his knee. All the doctors raced to Libba, so Hrovat decided that he would just go back on... He ran 10 metres and looked liked he had just ran 2 marathons. He came off and was wheezing pretty badly. It didn't look great for him at all. Sounds like he should be back for Round 1 though which is great news

It's going to be really sad seeing Libba - Knee - Season in every updated on this thread :(

Must be very disappointing for the young man, after having a good first pre-season at the Club. I was quite optimistic he'd play early in the year and become an important part of our new look game plan.

Hamstring setback for Shane Biggs (http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/2015-03-10/shanes-string-setback)

The Bulldogs playing group has emerged from Saturday's intra club hitout unscathed, leaving Senior Coach Luke Beveridge a near full compliment of players to select from for the weekend's NAB Challenge match in Ballarat against Melbourne.

Speaking with BulldogsTV, GM of Football Graham Lowe said the Club's coaching staff were pleased to get through the weekend's internal fixture without any injury concerns.

“It was great to get the work into both groups of players, in fact all players, they got through it well,” Lowe said.

“It’s really pleasing, (we can) now build towards NAB (Challenge) two against Melbourne.“

Midfielder Josh Prudden was one player to make a successful return in the intra club match after being concussed in the Bulldogs’ opening NAB Challenge match against Richmond.

“He progressed well in terms of his symptoms through the week, and put himself in a positive place (to play in the intra club match),” Lowe said.

“It was good to be able to get him out on the track, get him playing, and he came through the game really well.”

Key defender Fletcher Roberts is another on the verge of returning to full training after a modified program in recent weeks due to groin soreness.

“There’s a chance to bring him back towards full training, and manage his training and game loads, and bring him back towards the season.”

Meanwhile, half-back Shane Biggs looks set to miss remainder of the NAB Challenge, after injuring his hamstring at training last week.

The 23-year-old former Swan didn’t take any part in Saturday’s intra-club match, and will be closely monitored as the Bulldogs prepare for their Easter Saturday home season opener against West Coast at Etihad Stadium.

“(Shane’s) unlikely to take part in the NAB Challenge, but we’ll keep on top of him and build him up in the appropriate way,” Bulldogs GM of Football Graham Lowe told BulldogsTV.

Tom Liberatore successfully underwent reconstructive surgery on his left knee late last week, with Lowe telling BulldogsTV that the reigning Sutton Medallist will commence his rehab program next week at the Club.

Claymore: A claymore (/ˈkleɪmɔər/; from Scottish Gaelic claidheamh-mòr, "great sword")[1] is the Scottish variant of the late medieval two-handed longsword. It is characterised as having a cross hilt of forward-sloping quillons with quatrefoil terminations. It was in use from the 15th to 17th centuries. [source: Wikipedia]

Bulldog Wood cut down by hamstring injury (http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-04-16/bulldog-wood-cut-down-by-hamstring-injury?utm_medium=RSS)
WESTERN Bulldogs defender Easton Wood has suffered a hamstring injury at training on Thursday, just one day after re-signing with the club until the end of 2018.

The club described his latest setback as a minor hamstring injury that could sideline him for only one week.

Wood signed a one-year extension at the end of last season so both he and the Bulldogs could ensure his body could hold up to the rigours of AFL football.

The 25-year-old battled persistent hamstring injuries early in his career, with a serious hamstring tear restricting him to five games in 2013.

He played a career-high 18 games last year before a broken hand ended his season in round 20.

Wood has undergone a biomechanical assessment of his running and focused on building strength at the top of his hamstrings in an effort to get past the soft-tissue problems.

He had impressed in the first two rounds of the season attacking off half-back under new coach Luke Beveridge, racking up 20 possessions against Richmond in round two.

Wallis apparently deep bruising to the back, 3-4 weeks.
Morris torn pectoral muscle, without surgery 6 weeks, with maybe 8-10 weeks.

Not a great injury to have for a defender when you have to spoil and use your strength.

Dale Morris has undergone surgery today to repair a pectoral injury sustained in the first quarter against the Hawks on Sunday.

Bulldogs General Manager of Football Graham Lowe said the defender is likely to miss at least the next six weeks as a result.

“Dale suffered a significant injury to his left pectoral so he’s got some damage there.

“After further consultation today with a specialist we’ve determined the best course of action is for him to have surgery so he’ll be unavailable for six to eight weeks.”

I suggest 8+ weeks for Morris. Torn pectoral is a biggie, unfortunately.

2 weeks at most for Wallis. He'll be sore for a week, but will make quick progress in week 2. Might even slip in for a surprise return for Sydney, but I'd be confident 3 weeks is overs.

Injury Update after round 4

The Western Bulldogs have come through their 57-point win over Adelaide with minimal injury concerns after forward Jake Stringer recovered well from hamstring tightness.

Stringer was subbed out of the game as a precaution in the third term after a six-goal haul and Bulldogs General Manager of Football Graham Lowe said the Club held no concerns for his fitness.

“Jake had some hamstring tightness and as a precautionary measure we chose to use the sub with him.

“We have no concerns at this point that he’s not going to be available for us for this weekend against the Swans.”

Apart from Stringer, Lowe said there were no other injury reports after the round four match.

“Obviously a really positive performance and the players have come in well today after last night’s game and other than bumps and bruises we’re looking to have presented well.”

Bulldogs rookie Jordan Kelly will undergo surgery after he injured his finger in Footscray’s win over Casey in the VFL on Sunday, but was the only injury concern from that match.

“A frustrating day for Jordan, he sustained an injury to his finger and after specialist advice we’ve determined that surgery’s the solution and he’s got an injury to a tendon in his finger so he could be 6-8 weeks”

Dale Morris (pectoral) and Mitch Wallis (back) have both progressed according to plan after sustaining injuries in the Club’s round three match.

“Dale’s had surgery his surgery which went to plan and went well and he’s back around the Club… he’s tracking to the timelines as we’d expect,” said Lowe.

“Mitch has certainly freed up quite a bit and our plan is to progress his training over the next couple of weeks with a view to getting him back after that.”

Are they going to put screws or plates in Jong's hand I wonder? Gerard Whateley, I think it was, said it was his wrist. I broke my fifth metacarpal four months ago and its still bad and stiff but I'm 61. Jong is going to be impossible to replace. What's his name Cryin Gryphon was the closest; he was nearly as good.

I read it was fractured and he had the operation yesterday. Fractured I guess is not as bad as a break.

Fractured and broken are interchangeable words in medicine. There are certainly degrees of fractures though, and with over 27 bones in the hand it's hard to know exactly what his exact injury or management will be.
Obviously the doctors and physios are content that Lin's break is on the minor end of scale, potentially in a bone with minimal movement meaning a pin to hold it in place will be enough. I'd imagine that for Lin to get back within two weeks he will need quite a lot of painkillers, and given bones take around 6 weeks to heal there would be ongoing risk of re injury.

Hope it all goes well, his burst speed and physicality around the contest is hugely important.

Injury News from WB website:

Lin Jong and Jordan Kelly didn’t line up for the Dogs in the VFL after not being named in the side due to minor injury concerns.

“Lin’s had a bit of general soreness just in terms of total playing load and he had tight adductors so just really in a precautionary sense we managed him out of the game so we need to make some good decisions around him and make sure he finishes the season strongly.

“Jordan had a low grade adductor strain so we’re just making show that we get that settled down and looking to welcome them (both) back pretty quick.”

Footscray also rested rookie Roarke Smith but Lowe expected him to be available this weekend.

“Roarke’s a young player and he’s played a lot of game time so just from a general management perspective we want to make sure that we manage him through the season and to the back end of it well so we made a decision for him not to play.”

In positive news, young defender Zaine Cordy is moving through his rehab after fracturing his thumb.

“Zaine’s progressing really well and we’re looking to welcome him back in the next two to three weeks, so he’s doing well, it’ll be good to have him back out on the track.”

Maybe we could elevate Smith? For the regular VFL watchers has he done enough for a selection? From what I have seen I think he's close. Disposal still a little questionable at times but he's not far off. Pearce is also starting to put together some good games.

I dig what I have seen of Smith, he is obviously going to be promoted at the end of this year. Pearce could yet surprise. There will be opportunities, that is for sure.

Realistically we won't see him in the seniors again this year but Graham Lowe said 6 to 8 weeks so he may play some VFL finals

From memory if there is danger of a punctured lung the player can't fly for a certain amount if time. I remember someone getting injured in Sydbey once who would have been in strife had he flown down with the rest if the team.

If that's the case (which it most probably is not) Koby could be set for either an extended stay in lovely Cairns or a very long drive home.

I think Hawkins is very slow so if you put pressure on the ball deliverer he will be in trouble, if Roughy plays he will get the job done , don't forget we have the glove, height is no problem for him.

There are 8 games left. Toby McLean is said to be 5-7 games away from recommencing. He could be back for the pointy end of the season. If it were, say, 6 more weeks that would give him two home and away matches to re-establish himself. Could be just right and could be exactly what we are looking for if we make the finals.

Doc Larkins' injury update: round 21 (http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-08-24/doc-larkins-injury-update-round-21)

THE WESTERN Bulldogs will be sweating on the availability of experienced defender Dale Morris as they search for the match-ups to contain North Melbourne's in-form tall forward line on Saturday.

Morris was subbed out at three-quarter time of the Dogs' loss to West Coast in Perth on Sunday due to chronic Achilles soreness, and leading medico Dr Peter Larkins believes he is in some doubt to face the Roos.

"He's a veteran player so the Bulldogs looked after him and protected him," Larkins told AFL.com.au.

"I would've thought in a few days time he's going to settle down and he'll train later in the week.

"He's in doubt because it won't disappear but if it settles down well enough he's a good chance – he's not a definite miss."

If Morris is ruled out, the Bulldogs will have to find opponents for North talls Drew Petrie, Jarrad Waite and Ben Brown as they look to break the Kangaroos' seven-game winning streak.

Larkins also said:

- Tiger Ivan Maric and Bulldog Jarrad Grant, who both broke their noses at the weekend, should be fit for their respective matches.

A badly broken nose ended my football for Beverly Hills in the VAFA, despite having the temptation of continuing playing with Mark Browning, latterly of the Swans and Chris Smith latterly of the Lions. I was a hippy and didn't appreciate the violence; it was a round arm assault from their ruckman that shattered my nose and I was semi concussed.
The bridge of the nose is like an eggshell and like Humpty Dumpty. It sounds like Grant has a similar break. You'd need a fair bit of adrenalin to overcome the shock and tentativeness but it is the highest level and beware the injured player.
If the Dogs need me, I'm ready.

Wow, that is terrible news.

Talk about footy highs and lows... One week you make your AFL debut, then the next you do your knee playing VFL.

Looks like Kobe's heel isn't healing which is a common issue but disappointing none the less.

The Club will retain him on the Rookie list so he will have a lot of support

Not Bob - say it aint so! :(

WESTERN Bulldogs captain Robert Murphy could be in doubt for the club's first final.

Murphy pulled up sore from training on Thursday and coach Luke Beveridge said it wasn't worth risking the skipper against the Brisbane Lions.

Beveridge said it was a new issue with some high tendon soreness around the groin area.

Earlier this week Murphy had indicated he was certain to travel to Queensland.

Way to get everyone's heart a mess - did anyone hear Bevo say he's in doubt for next week during this morning's presser, or is the media doing it's usual 2 & 2 together thing?

LB: Murph started training yesterday, it's the same with Boyd,we thought they were going to play. But we made the decision not to risk them.

Asked if Murphy could be in doubt for the side's first final Beveridge said: "I hope not, but if it persists then he might be. It's new, but we hope he's going to be OK."

Was at the club yesterday and saw plenty of the players getting around in the café. No sign of any of them hobbling around (including Roughead who was rumoured to have an ankle I think).

Unfortunately it looks like the VFL side have lost Jordan Russell, as he was in a sling walking out with the doctor.

Bad AC joint injury. Say he is done for the year.

Bad AC joint injury. Say he is done for the year.

Huge loss for the VFL side. Such a big influence as a player and a leader of a young side.

Really feel for Koby. He was having his best year to date and had become an important component of our side. A tough, hard working mid who could shift forward.

All things being equal (and touch wood) he and Libba are two big inclusions next season.
