There’d be no tougher first-up assignment for a debutant than a match-up with the reigning premiers, and that was the task presented to young Dog Lukas Webb on the weekend.Webb debuted in red, white and blue against Hawthorn on Sunday, and while only managing ten disposals, impressed with his composure with the ball in hand.
The young defender, speaking with Sportsday Radio on Monday night, said the experienced Hawks surprised him most with their on-field chat.
“They were pretty incredible, I guess I didn’t really know what to expect when I was running out.
“They were just so prolific with their voice, they were yelling directions here and there, they didn’t leave anything in the balance they just said what they needed to say to each other.”
Webb, who was recruited to the Dogs in the 2014 NAB AFL National Draft, said the lead-up to the game and the match itself was a “surreal” feeling.
Although the Dogs went down by 70 points, Webb was pleased with both his own, and the team’s ability to play the game out in difficult circumstances.
“It was pretty tough, coming in for my first game.
“I just stuck it through. I think the boys put up a pretty good fight considering the circumstances.”

I really enjoyed listing to these two perspectives, from opposite ends of the age spectrum, on our team's performance.
Even at this early stage Marcus Bontempelli is showing all the attributes of a future club captain. So articulate and assured in his responses with a lovely sense of humour. No braggadocio - just tells it like it is and gives fulsome praise to his team mates and the coaching staff. And Matthew Boyd: one senses the enjoyment he's experiencing as a new buzz envelopes the club. He's loving the return of the excitement and I'm sure he's looking forward to the ride. Western Bulldogs’ list manager Jason McCartney says that his side are still improving despite having already claimed premiership success in 2016, and also shared why the club decided to recruit Travis Cloke.

The former North Melbourne player says that the influence of coach Luke Beveridge pushed the Bulldogs to success far earlier than expected, but considers the development of the young side has not halted due to their surprise flag this year.

“When you stack up where we were against what’s gone the last decade, we were a fair way short on that games experience but when Bevo came in last year, he just didn’t want to put a ceiling on what our group could do,” McCartney said on SEN’s The Run Home.

“He was quite bullish even from day one about what this group could do so, it’s fair to say what we did was with a really inexperienced group and hopefully holds us in good stead for a few years yet.

“Some of (our players) are going to be young and developing so it won’t stop us. We know we can’t stand still, we’ve always got to make this group better because everybody’s now coming for us."

McCartney hailed the work of lead recruiter Simon Dalrymple as outstanding, calling him a major factor in the Dogs’ 2016 flag.

The former Roo says that the club’s draft strategy has always been focused on picking up the best available player.]

“Predominantly it has been just trying to get good players. Good players that can play and fit well into our system,” McCartney said.

“From there we’ve been able to build a group that now we feel like we still have that same philosophy.

“We’ve predominantly gone best available. We’ve got trade, free agency and those mechanisms to look at needs if you really have to.”

The recruitment of much-maligned forward Travis Cloke to the premiers raised eyebrows of many around the competition, but McCartney believes what the 29-year-old can bring will make him worth the little cost it took to get him to Whitten Oval.

“We’re really light-on in that area, obviously we’ve drafted some kids in that area over the last week who’ll take some time, but when Jack Redpath went down with his knee, we just felt we needed to bolster that area of the ground and someone that could actually play now,” he said.

"In the GWS prelim final at times they were intercept marking. It just felt like if you had that bigger guy who can cover some ground but can also compete and bring the ball to ground, it’s just going to be an asset to have on your list.

“Obviously we didn’t have to give up too in terms of a trade transaction which is really important so we were able to protect our draft position for the kids.”

It's March 19. Nearly 6 months have passed. I just listened to this again. Jesus, I am a big sook. I'm smiling so much while I listen and my eyes fill with tears of joy. That was such an overwhelming experience, that day. I don't think I will ever get over it. If I listen to these highlights again in 20 years time I'm sure my reaction will be the same. Bob Murphy is a member of the 300 Game Club, the spiritual leader of the Western Bulldogs and one of the most beloved players in the AFL.


In 2016 Bob went down with a ruptured ACL in the dying stages of a match against Hawthorn at Etihad. As fate would have it the Bulldogs went on to win the Premiership with Murphy watching from the sidelines, but it was a gesture from Luke Beveridge to Bob at the end of the game that became the iconic moment of the Doggies triumph.

Didn't let much out , but reading between the lines all this bravo from the so called "know all" journos is just them trying to compete for a headline.
Eg who's out of contact let's pick on them as a story to be unhappy and leaving.
Admittedy they will get the odd one right but that's just a pectantage thing . Make up 20 and one will be right then claim to be on the inside and knowing everything but ignore the 19 they got wrong.

No problems. Yes it was, played a pretty straight bat. The most I took out of it was that we'd been at the draft in the previous few years so maybe would be more active in the free agent/trade area.
