This is the round 7 2016 edition of the Weekly Bankers and Anchors Thread. Once the game against Adelaide is concluded post your nominations for:

The Bankers = 3 guys that you we banked on to do the right thing during the game
The Anchors = 3 guys that weighed us down by their errors or poor play

Please limit it to no more than three of each, but feel free to make honourable/dishonourable mentions. As usual try to make it constructive criticism.

Try and restrict it to individual players rather than aspects of the overall match.

The thread is named in honour of a popular WOOF Contributor, The Banker, who passed away on 22/04/2012 after a six month battle with cancer.

B:

Stringer & Redpath combo. Can't wait to add Boyd in.
Engine room. Dahl, Wally, Libba. Awesome.
Winning a high pressure game!!!!! And a kid like Bailey being crucial in the last 5-10 minutes.

A:

Betts knocking the ball out and appealing for deliberate out of bounds. Then the umpire paying it...
Roberts & Adcock, unless your VFL form is brilliant for 2 months, thanks for your service. 21 of our players laid a tackle, but not Adcock...
Capitalising forward entries and goal kicking. It won't be raised too much with a huge win, but we had a heap more for a slim margin.

Jack Redpath's inclusion.
Liberatore's 1st quarter tackle on Sloan.
The free kick count 28 to 12, sorry Adelaide they were justified.

Anchors
Roberts - alas, totally outplayed.
68 inside 50's to 37 and we won by just 15 points.
Jack Macrae's inability to kick long - although the effort is there for sure

Yep it finally went our way. So important for our group.

B:

- Bonti. Huge game from him and the fatc that he nailed the sealer after missing them in the EF was really pleasing.
- Redpath. He gave us structure, took pressure off Stringer and finished really well.
- Dale's last quarter. He had a big impact with some class and composure.

A:

- Roberts is not AFL standard and I'd have him as a strong delist candidate. No point holding onto players because they're tall, and he's had enough time to put together more than he has to date. We have better options out of the side and I'm confident we could even find better representation in a state league.

- The game has gone past Adcock. He's very slow by foot and he goes to ground constantly - two traits of a player who can no longer keep up. I was a fan of the decision to rookie him but it hasn't worked.

-Our incessant, stupid, frustrating propensity to handball handball handball. It gets us into so much trouble. We over possess far, far too much.

Bankers

1. Matthew Boyd's tackle on Jenkins in the goal square plus his two big marks with 5 minutes to go.

2. Stringers 4 goals plus creating at least another 4

3. Roughy, Campbell and Redpath took 16 marks, plus Stringer 5. We haven't seen that for a long time.

Anchors

1. Allowing Adelaide to kick 17 goals from 37 inside 50s

2. Roberts inability to compete in the air and some poor decision making costing us goals.

3. Macrae refusing to have a shot at goal and passing off to someone in a worse position - really frustrating

I thought Roberts' one on one contest were quite good. Structure caused us to leak goals not Roberts alone.

Bont - did some very good things at important times, feels like he's going to explode over the balance of the season
Dale - justified the faith shown in him by the MC tonight, played a hand in winning the game for us (a big hand) with some important touches, tackles and marks
Redpath - good to have him back and demonstrated the benefit of having a big forward who can lead at the ball carrier/into the space

A:
Adcock - I'm losing faith in his ability to become a player for us
Me - for not tipping us

Hey Easty, is this new? This thread has always been about areas of the game, not just the best & worst 3 players. It also appears to contradict your anchors

Anchors

The umpires in the last quarter

Bankers

Another win in the hitouts against one of the league's best rucks
Dominating clearances & contested possessions
Better ball use going inside 50

Anchors

Getting outmarked in defensive 50 - we can't allow someone to kick 8 goals and expect to win every week
Eddie getting out the back in the last when the game was on the line
Umpires trying to even up the free kick count in the last with the game on the line

Bonti- just brilliant. Ridiculously clean hands. Trust me, the tv version didn't do justice to how good his one-grab was of the footy when he kicked his first goal. 10 important last quarter possessions including the match winner.
Wally- almost single handedly turned the game back in our favour in the third. Huge.
Woody- was just grand in defence.

Anchors:
The bloke (who hasn't sat in our area previously to my knowledge) who sat behind me and near on ruined one of the best h&a games I've seen. Just sat down and teed off on Macrae, hunter and Roberts the whole game, was a broken record about how easily Adelaide were getting goals and how stupid footballers all our players are. Just non-stop absolute ear cancer for 2 hours. I'm really not too sure if he was happy we won, or was disappointed that he couldn't continue to rant about what failures we are.

Don't really want to anchor anyone after such a great win. Roberts and Adams probably struggled a bit- but the were left wide open by the mids and high backs over committing forward at times, so it would have been bloody tough.

Bankers - The fans! For egging the boys on and making Etihad a genuine hot-house for the opposition. The boys' gutsy effort with the song at the end. Topped off a grand night. Special mention for Baily Dale - does he shave yet? The youth in our team is incredible, their courage.

Anchors - Doubters.

Bankers - Boyd, cops a lot of flak for his missing of targets, but he was immense in that last term
The Bont ,the match winning goal, and he took the game by the scruff of the neck.
Stringer, I think mentally Redpaths inclusion really helped him
Anchors - We were scored against to easy. Roberts had a mare of a night
- The social media Adelaide whinge. They were second to the ball for the majority of the night, and hence why we got the most free kicks .
- Channel 7 commentary, it was awful! Brian Taylor just consumes his own bath water constantly . Another name to the blooper files, Fraser Dale! Taylor had Jake doing his "String", and even after showing the replay he was adamant he'd done his hammy.
You could see from 200 metres away he'd been corked .

Ill allow freedom to put areas of the game as bankers or anchors along with players who were bankers and anchors. It does seem the trend of this particular thread is going that way.

I thought Roberts' one on one contest were quite good. Structure caused us to leak goals not Roberts alone.

Our structure saved Roberts' bacon by restricting their inside 50s. I can recall at least 3 or 4 one on ones that he lost that turned into goals, I'm sure there will be more when I watch the replay. There will also be plenty of contests that he neutralised but that's his job.

His one on one work is woeful right now. That last goal where he and Taylor were one out, he had position on Taylor and decided to half heartedly mark rather than kill the contest was unforgivable.

Had the same issue a couple of weeks ago when I came down for the Brisbane game. Although it was just a bloke in my case, it was a lady and a bloke who just continually commentated on the game , for the majority criticising the team and how poor they were. It was non-stop and kinda spoilt what was a good night. They were so knowledgeable that they thought Adcock was Dunkley (and gave him a serve). If i wasn't with the family I would have clearly let my intentions be known.

Although he had some bad moments, it is worth noting that Roberts was left to compete one out with Walker about 5 times in the first 7 or 8 minutes of the last quarter at half forward and he did manage to halve the contest in all but one- meaning it saved us from concede clear inside 50s.

Our ability to cut off the ball 70-80 from the crows goal (particularly Boyd and Wood) swayed the inside 50 count even further. The +31 inside 50s stat needs to be tempered by remembering our aggressive half back positioning - which will mean we'll almost always reduce actual inside 50s, but the level of risk also means teams can get out the back of us at times also, and therefore potential to score at a high % when they do get over the zone.

Yes I also battled the urge to say something - being unsure whether this person will become a regular fixture in that seat, if they are it become awkward every week!! With any luck it was a one off!

Our structure caught us out many times and we bleed goals because of it. We almost lost the game because of it and lost the Hawks game the same way. As for Roberts I saw him play on Walker for most of the game and thought he competed well. Always seemed to get a hand on the ball in contests. I'm not a huge wrap on Fletch but don't think he deserves to be canned so calously like he has in here.

Bankers-

The midfield - Our clearance work for most of the game was excellent.

Morris & Boyd - Led the way in defense

Adjustments - much stronger focus to take the game on than last week, sure it hurt us at times, but it was great to show we can change things up successfully in one week.

Anchors-

Wasteful - Really should have had the game iced a lot earlier. To win the inside 50's by almost 30 and only be up by less than a luck with 2min to play isn't good enough

Handball - Just too many to players under pressure.

Free kicks - Whilst Adel were clumsy with their tackling I'm not a fan of our players throwing their heads back as they are tackled.. It's a shithouse look and we need to be better than that.

Wallis- massive game for Mitch, just a beast around the ball.

Dahlhaus- no player in the AFL works harder then this bloke.

Kyle Cheney- Noted that every single dogs player went up to him after the game and gave him a pat on the back. Obviously a huge amount of respect for the guy from our playing group.

Anchors
Adams- had a pretty bloody ordinary game, missed way to many handballs and was scored against heavily.

Hunter- the blind kick forward to an Adelaide player on multiple occasions had me fuming, dumb football.

Adelaide Supporters- absolute nufties.

Bontempelli - he was outstanding inside the contest with extracting the ball. Clean hands and keeping his arms free from the tackler. Clutch goals. He was back to his best that has his player ranking 8th in the league. I said to my daughter that he's the only bloke I wouldn't have a problem with her marrying.

Libba - he's been ok off half back in a new role for him over the past few weeks but he was a welcome addition back in the middle last night. His clearance work is first class. He was back to his pre knee form.

Boyd/Morris - the old fellas were huge in defence tonight. Let's face it, we sucked down back. Boyd and Morris were so calm and clean back there. Their experience shone through.

Anchors

Adcock - did he actually play? I barely sighted him. He needs to do more.

Roberts / Adams - Adelaide are so clean and efficient inside 50 and there talls were making Roberts and Adams look like they had played 28 games between them. That's just it though, they are both pretty raw and had a very hard job against probably the best forward line in the comp right now. They were soundly beaten.

Goal kicking - Adelaide showed us how it's done. Whether it's not taking the shot when they should (Macrae, Roughead, etc) or fairly straight forward set shots (Campbell), we need to be better. We were pretty unlucky with a few posters though.

I actually thought Adelaide fluffed some of their shots on goal that they would normally nail. Douglas missed two in the space of a few minutes, Betts missed one on the run that he would normally nail and there was another who missed from about 25 metres out on a slight angle. Jenkins was the exception kicking 8 straight.

Agree though that our kicking for goal still needs a heck of improvement, though our set shots were better last night than in previous weeks.

We did get a bit lucky with some frees they gave away. They were undisciplined and it cost them. I was annoyed at how close this game actually was considering our entry count.

Bankers:

Adams and Roberts, I thought they spoiled enough contested marks when they were exposed by some incisive forward moves by the Crow-eaters to hold their heads up if not high. Most of Jenkins' goals came from very hard to stop leads where good work had been done upfield or from being on the end of overlapping plays that gave them a numerical advantage close to their scoring end. Taylor Walker was held. Likewise, Lynch was a good contributor but not a match winner.

The Quintet of Doom: Wallis, Libba, Bont, Dahl, Macrae great all night in the stoppages.

Dale Morris: Still got it.

Anchors:

Adcock, sorry but I just can't see how he is getting a game ahead of Jong, Webb, Honeychurch or Dunkley. Last night sort of confirmed this for me.

Macrae's kicking: he has a strange sand iron or chipping wedge technique and unfortunately it limits his effectiveness by foot. Needs to get a straight forward long kick into his repertoire.

Betts' brilliant play on the boundary: sorry Crows fans, he had clearly gone way out of bounds. Your whinging on that one put some of your other complaints about the umpiring into context.

always right

B:
Boyd.....many claim he is falling away. He was huge last night....all game....and his disposal was exemplary.

Roughy and Campbell.....really pleased with their combination.

Redpath.....as usual he drifted out of the game late but his impact on the side structurally makes us a better side.....and he kicks straight.

A:
That goal to Jenkins when Eddie snuck out the back late in the game. How could we not have learned from the Sicily goal against Hawthorn?

Same passage of play....Wood tries to body Walker instead of jumping and spoiling the contest.....as he would normally do 99% of the time.

Adam's handballing. Love the guy but hit your targets mate.

Big moment players. Boyd, Bont, Stringer and Dale made significant plays in moments where I feel we historically have been found wanting. Great to see.

Redpath's conversion in front of goal.

Jenkins, dominant display from a big man. Almost dragged them over the line.

ANCHORS:

Betts' goal after the Tex mark in the middle. Almost a carbon copy of the Hawks game where Bob did his knee. Needed to kill that contest.

Pyle and AFC soaking over umpires. Norf like.

Handballs inside 50.

Bankers:

1. Toby McLean played a great game, head over the ball when it was his turn to go and judicial in hanging back for the crumb.
2. Umpiring. And no, not because the free kicks went our way (honest!) but because it was a pretty well-umpired game. Frenetic pace and the high tackles and throwing of the ball from both sides were mostly picked up.
3. Luke Darcy's wife for still loving him despite that dancing.

Anchors:
1. Like others I thought Fletcher was poor but I'm not on the delistment wagon, remember Wood was a pretty poor one-on-one defender until he got it all together. Not giving up on Fletch yet.
2. Adelaide's very existence. Shit stains.
3. I got nothin' else. Great game.

Stringer - answered the critics, turned it on as he can do. Played the game out with a bad corkie too.
Bont - that last goal is something I've been looking for for some time. Someone who wants to stand up and take the game.
Moz - rock solid. Boydy too, I've been a critic but he picked up 27 possies at 85% efficiency.

A
- Adams - love his game overall, but some ordinary moments. I'll forgive him losing that early mark in the lights!
-Fletcher - we just need him to be better.
-The blokes behind me. Could've been anchors, but their very vocal efforts turned in the last few minutes to abuse. I'd much rather hang it on Radelaide fans. Likewise the idiots throwing chips and assorted rubbish onto the Crows fans nearby. Just poor form.
