I can't believe more isn't being made of the GWS Freo trade. What a mess by GWS.

IIRC last year Freo offered them last years first round pick (15ish) and the future year first round pick (turned out to be pick 3)

But no they decided to 'make a stand' well played GWS.. Could have had pick 15 last year and pick 3 this year for him, instead Freo have now made out like the bandits.

True you are. But I guess it's kind of like spilling some Bollinger or Dom Perignon from a glass when you're sitting on a crate full of it. Not ideal to waste some, but who cares, they'll just open another bottle and keep on drinking from the AFEL and the rest of the competition.

However, the loser was also Cam McCarthy who thought he can just walk out of GWS and go where he wants when he has a contract. Missed a whole year of footy.

Contracts don't seem to be worth the paper there written on.

Contracts don't seem to be worth the paper there written on.

If players want to leave, contract or not, then they will in 99% of the cases.

I wonder if clubs will begin pushing back by offering shorter contract terms - what's the point of locking in players for long term contracts when they can leave and potentially, a poor season can mean better ability to manage the list and TPP? Port Adelaide are a good example, the massive contract with Hartlett is causing a few issues and making it more difficult to move him on. Swans probably the same with Tippett and Reid - without those long deals they would've been better placed to keep Mitchell.

It may end up that only franchise players (if I can steal an American sport term) are given contracts with 3+ years.

Pretty excited that Geelong have very little wriggle room re. the Lids trade. Lachie Henderson clearly a master stroke. Looking forward to them losing a good player in Caddy. Richmond will be fair in the guts with Caddy, Cotchin, Martin and Prestia next year.

Even more so they have a pick to grab Hamling now.

Pick 23 for Hamling that's a massive upgrade for two years work. It's like buying a run down ramshackle house in Craigieburn and reselling to a middle class family in Carlton. It's not a Toorak return, but it's far better than what we paid for it and it may assist us with the Deledio trade and we keep 18.

Hamling was good for 4 games remember. He's been ok in the past and dropped off. I'm not sold on it but I wish MJP could give us his thoughts on it as he's rated Hamling for a long time.

If they lose Hartung as well they'll be worse. Hartung may be a best 20-22 player but he's quick and and will improve. Losing him and Hill means they lose a lot of pace and ripping the heart out of your midfield for next to nothing has to have a detrimental affect on their performances next year.

Can someone explain how the Hawks think they can on trade pick 10 to GC for Jaeger after trading next year's first.

I thought there were clear restrictions about trading first rounders 2 years in a row. If that's the case, will the AFEL approve the deal and Hawks will just have to manufacture a first rounder down the track somehow.

If so, seems to go against the spirit of the rule. Not that it would stop the AFEL or the Hawks.

Don't know why they're not prepared to take a whack for a year or two and regenerate. Swans showed it can be done (albeit with academy help), we took 3-4 years to go from basket case to finalists to premiers.

From the outside, it looks like they've completely de-stabilised the playing group by bringing in big money recruits into a team that has prided itself on taking cuts to stay together.

Port are idiots. They are at best a 50-50 shot of playing finals. Meaning they are very likely to be trading a pick which is at worst pick 10 in return for 19 and 30. That's not worth it.

For Stevens it would have to be a future 2nd round. Saints should improve again.

You'd assume North / Carlton will fall and remain the same.

75 and 76 are very unlikely to be used. 61 is probably earmaked for Cloke.
It depends on what we get for Stevens (I think the Saints are offering pick 50) and Hrovat if we can put together a late move on a player or to move up a few spots in the draft.

Dogs: 18, 43 & 50 (rumoured Stevens trade) = 1,640 points
Suns: 24, 26 = 1,514 points

If we can can swap second rounders with Carlton for Hrovat, that's pick 25 (giving them back 35).

Picks 24, 25, 26, 61 on Cloke

In: 4 - players/picks
Out: 4 - Minson, Hamling, Stevens, Hrovat

It's not us. He and his manager have met numerous clubs and he's happy to be traded to North or Carlton. North may give us 33, but if Carlton trade second rounders 25/35 then that may be a good result if we can do a points trade with GCS.

Why would it look like a poor deal?

We've done a deal that helps a well liked and respected player get to his home of choice. Uncontracted and has played very little footy over the past 2 years.

We're lucky to get anything for him, yet it reaffirms our reputation as fair dealing and builds a relationship with another list manager.

AFL admits to making a mistake in the massive trade which sent Jaeger O’Meara to Hawthorn (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/afl-admits-to-making-a-mistake-in-the-massive-trade-which-sent-jaeger-omeara-to-hawthorn/news-story/e5b34107a511d81bcae89b09cf81669e)

SAM LANDSBERGER, Herald Sun
October 25, 2016 7:00pm

THE AFL has admitted to making a blunder in this year’s biggest trade — Jaeger O’Meara to Hawthorn.

Confusion surrounded the blockbuster deal until the AFL clarified on Tuesday that the Hawks had been allowed to part with their first two selections in next year’s draft.

AFL rules state that once a club trades its future first-round pick, it cannot trade any additional future picks.
The week before the O’Meara trade, Hawthorn sent its future first-round selection to St Kilda in a deal that also raised eyebrows.

But the league told the Herald Sun it had “interpreted” its own rule to mean the O’Meara deal was legal.
The AFL said Hawthorn was permitted to trade its future second-round selection, so long as it first acquired another club’s future second-rounder.

Moments before the O’Meara deal was lodged, Hawthorn secured Greater Western Sydney’s future second-round pick, courtesy of a trade with Carlton.
Under the league’s interpretation, that allowed Hawthorn to trade its own future second-rounder to the Suns as long as it held onto the Giants’.

The AFL’s interpretation allowed he Hawks to pull an ace when they appeared snookered on O’Meara entering the final day of trade period.

Compounding the mess, the official paperwork distributed by the AFL after Thursday’s deadline incorrectly stated that the Hawks had on-traded the Giants’ future second-rounder and kept their own.

That outcome would have fitted neatly with the wording of the AFL rule.
But the Suns and Hawks both believed that Hawthorn’s future second-rounder was part of the O’Meara trade — and the AFL confirmed that on Tuesday.

O’Meara was one of eight deals lodged in the frantic final 16 minutes of trade period, with several processed after the 2pm deadline.

The O’Meara bungle adds to what some clubs have already labelled the “dodgiest” trade period yet.

It began with Hawthorn publishing a statement declaring free agent Tyrone Vickery had accepted a three-year deal, only for that to be deleted and quickly replaced with a statement saying it was two years.

Sources close to Vickery told the Herald Sun before the deal was done he was expecting to stay at Waverley for at least three years.
The Hawks were routinely quizzed by the AFL and rivals wondered whether Vickery’s contract was structured to help Richmond land a better compensation pick.

Geelong recruiter Stephen Wells then admitted he was unaware the Cats could trade their future-round pick to secure Blue Zach Tuohy.
Geelong had already traded its first pick in 2015 and 2016 — to secure Patrick Dangerfield and Lachie Henderson — and AFL rules state clubs must use two first-round picks in every rolling four-year period.

Recruiters across the country believed that meant the Cats had to keep their first pick in 2017.
Instead, the AFL decided Geelong could punt its top 2017 pick, so long as it uses two in the next two years.

“I must admit, there was a perception here myself that a deal like this couldn’t be done, but we did check with the AFL,” Wells said.
The Herald Sun reported on Saturday that clubs were left “bewildered” by the guaranteed draft windfall for St Kilda in its pick swap with Hawthorn and were surprised at Carlton’s generosity in brokering the O’Meara deal.

The Blues gave Hawthorn the Giants’ future pick — which will fall between 19-36 — in exchange for picks 48, 66 and 70 on November 25.

Hawthorn will enter this year’s draft at pick 88 and next year’s draft at the Giants’ second pick, but was thrilled to land O’Meara, Vickery and Tom Mitchell.

THE AFL’S RULE

“Should a club trade its future first round selection, it may not trade any other future selection for that same draft.”

WHAT HAPPENED

— Hawthorn traded its future first-round selection to St Kilda on October 14

— AFL paperwork after trade period stated Hawthorn on-traded Greater Western Sydney’s future second-round selection to Gold Coast in O’Meara deal

— Hawthorn and Gold Coast informed supporters that the deal instead involved the Hawks’ future second-round selection

— AFL yesterday said its paperwork was wrong, and Hawks traded their own future second-round selection to Gold Coast, as the clubs stated

AFL’S EXPLANATION

“They traded in the GWS future round two selection first, which meant they had a selection in the round that they could trade out, and they elected to trade out their selection, and keep the GWS selection.

“The AFL has interpreted the rule as that they had to retain a round two and round three selection, after trading out round one, so they had to trade in a round two before they were allowed to trade out a round two.”

Normally the AFEL take longer pretending they've investigated something legitimately. Interesting.

This Carlton thing is hilarious. How many draft picks will he give away before somebody thinks to stop him?

Mick Barlow has reportedly been signed as a DFA by Gold Coast Suns. I am pleased for him as he is clearly AFL quality and seems like a good bloke. Pretty good pick up for GCS who can use another big bodied, hard at it mid.

Sensational pick up for them especially given Jarrod Garlett's departure back home to WA.

Not the same quality but Barlow is a handy replacement for Dion Prestia.

Josh Green signed by Essendon as a DFA. Xavier Richards training with them as well.

Collingwood looking to rookie list Will Minson to mentor their young ruckmen, like they did with Ben Hudson. Don't do it Will!

Delidio to GWS

So glad we didn't get him.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-03-03/giants-rule-deledio-out-of-round-one-as-calf-flares-again

BRETT Deledio has been officially ruled out of contention for Greater Western Sydney's season opener against Adelaide after aggravating his troublesome calf injury during the week.

Deledio played just 11 games for Richmond last season due to persistent calf and Achilles issues, and the latest setback is a massive worry for the Giants and the 29-year-old star.

Speaking after the club's JLT Community Series loss to the Swans, GWS coach Leon Cameron revealed that Deledio had been close to getting back onto the field but broke down at training this week.

Giants go down to Swans in the wet

"He had six really good weeks with us then hurt his calf a few weeks back, then he looked like he was going to get going again, but he's re-injured it," he said.

"It's disappointing for him, it's always hard when you're a new player from another club that wants to get out there and impress.

"He just wants to get out there and play, as a professional athlete, so it was disappointing to cop that news during the week."

Deledio was always going to struggle to prove his fitness for the Giants' first game of the season against the Crows after hurting his calf in early February.

He still hadn't joined the main training group on a full-time basis, instead limited to some running exercises and gym work, but Cameron said he has faith the club's rehabilitation experts can work their magic on the former Tiger.

"I'm confident that our medical staff are doing all the right things.

“Yes, over the last two years he's had setbacks in terms of his Achilles, calves and quads, but I'm confident they can get him right," he said.

"It's about finding out what he can and can't do at this stage, but we're confident that he can get up and running and play some good footy for us."

Cameron said the Giants wouldn't be looking at placing Deledio on the long-term injury list.

"Right now we've got a full book other than a couple of injuries; Brett is one of them and Matt de Boer (hamstring) is the other, that aren't available to play round one," Cameron said.

So he's done his calf twice in 2 months. Not a good sign at his age. Richmond must be happy.

He's magic beans is Deledio. He would be perfect for us except he only gets on the park every now and then.

Not the only ones, so glad we didn't pick him up after a last minute attempt to lure him our way.

Two first rounders next year for a bloke who is cooked - not bad trading at all.

Geez. Two first rounders for Deledio and we get SFA for a premiership fullback. Let's see who plays more games from here on in.
