LUKE BEVERIDGE (Western Bulldogs coach)


Is it the greatest single coaching performance of all time? It's pretty hard to argue otherwise. In his first two years as a senior AFL coach, Beveridge has taken the Bulldogs from 14th at the end of 2014, to eighth to arguably the most romantic premiership the AFL has seen.

His man management skills may also have helped change the face of coaching, Beveridge eliciting new heights from a score of players not many would have believed possible, names like Liam Picken, Jason Johannisen and Lachie Hunter.


He's fostered a level of depth and flexibility across his list superior to all his rivals. And he's cajoled a side which finished only seventh on the ladder to four successive against-the-odds finals wins to land the ultimate. All whilst retaining a humble and self-effacing persona.

I don't get people who get so upset by people choosing to use inclusive language. Like it personally offends them.

Not upset, we just think it's funny. We are old enough to remember how silly things got back in the day when people wanted to use non-gender specific so badly they were happy to mangle the language.


I'm all for inclusiveness but it doesn't mean that I'll take it so seriously that I won't take the chance, like I would with anything else, to tease it a little when it gets too precious.

You would have loved young labor and the inevitable hour long heated discussion about the etymology of the word chairman that kicked off every meeting. "It's got nothing to do with gender. It's from the same root word as manager, and I should know because I'm doing an English major!"

Football person would have been less clunky. Apart from anything else Footballer denotes someone playing football. That would mean that the award can't be awarded to anyone who isn't actively playing football.

I had a different impression from Greystache but that's been coloured by people announcing on Facebook that they won't ever vote for a politician because they were sent a card that says 'Happy Holidays'.

Ultimately both extremes are stupid.

I've seen that in junior cricket. They can't call the kids batsmen anymore, so it became batsperson, but some people have claimed it's unconsciously sexist, so they have to use the neutral batters. What's even better is when they refer to the craft of batting it's referred to as battersship.

Rather than turning the English language into non-sensical gibberish to placate the vain permanently outraged, we may as well start a new language that only has a few hundred words to avoid offence.

You'd have to leave a lot of stuff out if your vocabulary was limited to only 300 words. I couldn't see a case for football or TV for instance.
