Every rational faculty suggests we'll knock them over, again, but something in the guts says they'll get us tonight.

Hoping for an encore from Stringer, and a bit more key-moment authority from the Bont.

If they're omitting players on form i.e Libba, Bont needs a spell. He has only given frees away. IMO he's keeping his spot based on the fact he MIGHT have a good 15 minutes.

Yet again find ourselves behind the 8 ball. To a 3-7 team that has struggled at home this year.
We usually find a way to pull things back at some stage; but we are still nowhere near playing the type of consistent football that a premiership team should be playing.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
08-06-2017, 09:29 PM
English is a great prospect for sure, but not on this type of track, not against this big bodied team and not at his current weight.
Our midield is getting killed and Sydney's pressure is like ours was in September last year. Our pressure around the contest is nowhere near where our game style requires it to be.

The Bulldogs Bite
08-06-2017, 09:32 PM
The decision to play English was very poor, but the crux of the issue is that we arent even a shadow of the team we were last year. Hunger? Motivation? We look flat and disinterested and it's been present in every game we've played this year - GWS game the exception.

I'm wondering when the heat will come on us because we've served up some real rubbish in games consistently.

These blokes are playing for their place in the side next week;
Cloke......just no impact on the contest.
Boyd......looks like an old man out there
Suckling.....one trick pony

Jong playing his worst game of the year. Has made fumbling an art form tonight.
Roughy having zero impact. Show some physicality FFS.
Midfielders letting their opponents run goalside unchallenged.
Defenders giving Adams zero support against Buddy.
Stringer gone missing.
Bont ineffective.
Caleb, Adams and Wallis only ones who can hold their heads high.

They all need to do something in the second half. Caleb playing a lone hand. The delivery to the forward line has been pathetic to say the least.

jeemak
08-06-2017, 09:35 PM
The strategy of having Bontempelli play for the Swans for the first 45 minutes was clearly not a good one.

Why Jong lay limp on the ground leading up to that holding the ball instead of thrashing around is beyond my talents to understand. He's been playing football for ages, he should have known better. I nearly spat out my food.

We are really slow to adjust to the conditions sometimes. Our over handballing not only increases our chances of turning it over, but it allows numbers to get back. It seems with this approach we have a huge cluster of players close enough to the ball to get a handball receive, and when we finally kick no players where the ball eventually ends up.

Hunter, Stringer, Cloke and Dickson need to be better.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
08-06-2017, 09:35 PM
There has to be some KPI's that Libba is not yet hitting to remain out of the team. I'm hard pressed to see what they are when compared to what some of those currently in the team are dishing up.

Very few clean entries. We're under constant pressure and need to be quicker making a decision. Closing the gap on this horrible ground is a pretty easy task, hesitate and the gaps close up pretty quickly.

I know Bont has been largely ineffective, but its misleading. He's getting caught because those options for quick release by hand are not available. Its meaning he is holding on to the ball longer in tight and having to scan for the 2nd, 3rd and even 4th iption.
Not good enough from a team whose success is built upon 100% effort from all at all times.

The Bulldogs Bite
08-06-2017, 09:40 PM
Umpires not worth bringing up IMO. Sydney have had the run of the green but they're the ones making the play, when you make the play inevitably you get the good fortune of free kicks. They're proactive and we're reactive.

Happy Days
08-06-2017, 09:41 PM
We just aren't affecting enough contests. There's far too much waiting for error rather than playing to a body; it's not that we aren't playing the conditions, more that we're overthinking them.

Adams is being isolated far too often. Wood needs to get on his bike and give him a better chop out.

Fancy Papley telling Biggs he shirked a contest. I can't stand players who aren't elite talents and haven't achieved anything trying to "get under guy's skin".

The game is also objectively horrible.

Something doesn't seem right and hasn't for much of the year.

Whether it's just complacency (a little like the Hawks in 2009) or something more sinister I'm not sure. I get the impression that a number of our players are very very happy with themselves and think they're the bees knees. I also get the impression there's a significant party culture within elements of the playing group, and it wouldn't surprise me too much to learn that a number of them got completely wasted quite often.

An atrocious performance across the board, by any measure. Really went against the identity of this team which was the hardest part to stomach. We were not persistent, we were not dogged, we were not tough. They came out with the intent to bully us and we rolled over. Shameful.

The inability to take a contested mark anywhere from the wing all the way forward killed us. Just upped the degree of difficulty beyond belief. Same issues that have hurt us all year got us again. Poor kicking, poor coverage at the coal face, poor ruck work. It was a circus.

Are we similar to Hawthorn in '08 and '09?Snatching an unlikely flag then dropping off significantly the following year? Or can we find some form coming into the 2nd half of the year? I think we are gone and will struggle to make the eight. Can Bevo find a way to lead us out of this slump or is Bevo also struggling with tactics and selections?

I don't like the comparison because it diminishes last seasons outstanding result as a bit of a fluke. I tend to think we traded poorly and have tended to mess around with selections. We also haven't improved our foot skills.

I wouldn't write Bevo off on getting us back on track but it's to happen soon.

A few have commented on the lack of protection for JJ. Fair enough but I was really annoyed at JJ's feeble acceptance of his treatment. I know it's not in his character but FFS show some fight man. Thanks to your (lack of) response you can now expect every team to adopt the same approach. Hard to stomach that you were just owned my George Hewitt. George F**ken Hewitt.

Agree with this, and it goes for Jong too. Each of those blokes just passively accepted the bumps etc. I expect our players to either up their intensity at the contest, or bite back, hard. No one made them accountable for it. I get that footy is different from when and where I played, but I would've gouged Jones' eyes out in a pack for his bullshit niggle.

I'm concerned about Adams. Not even coming to sit on the pine the last half.

Moon boot post game in the rooms.

Even though we've not been at our best, we have been nothing short of honest in every game this year until tonight - whilst I'm really disappointed with our performance I'm prepared to write it off as a collective shocker, which to be fair the players have hardly delivered in 2 and a 1/2 years under Bevo. And it came after a very strong performance against St Kilda, which to be frank we let slip a potential 10 goal win.

I expect to see a strong response next week.

Well that was a bad one. Did not look like it tonight. There were some brief moments in the 2nd and 3rd quarters that looked a bit more promising but the negatives outnumbered the positives.

The good: Dahlhaus, Wallis, Adams when he was playing and Mclean in the 1st quarter looked quite good.

The bad: M Boyd could be nearer the end very shortly, Cloke and Stringer very poor tonight - Stringer the opposite pretty much compared to the last game where he kicked 5 and look really good up forward. Bonti and Picko are out of form.

We did not have clean hands tonight and dropped the ball quite a lot and the turnovers no good.

We have a lot to do to get out of this hole and hopefully this is an abberation like the Cats game around this time last year and we get on with it and push on and get into the 8 first and foremost before thinking of the top 4 until we are in a position to get in there.
