Ever since this kid came on the scene commentators have fallen over each other in their rush to rhapsodize over his "spectacular efforts" his "courageous efforts" his "desperate efforts" his "great second efforts" and his "desperate spoils". Dermie saw the ghost of Jack's old man out there today.
A standard paddle the ball a couple of times ahead of himself is described by Duh'wayne as "spectacular play by Silvagni. Give me a break please.
Are the commentators getting a sling from his manager?

I wouldn't take anything Dwane says seriously. Stringer kicked a goal in a game last year and Dwane starts yelling "Stringer's in the game, Stringer's in the game" no shit Dwane? A player out on the field has kicked the ball? Well *!*!*!*! me!

It still has me miffed how his old man was in the team of the century as fullback. All he did all day was hang on to his opponent and wrestle. His father was media darling and now they are on to him.

His dad was a pretty good player.

The guy he thinks is his dad wasn't bad either.

I actually thought Jobe was the greatest player ever. The gushing over him over the years has been Macavaney like from the media. I still don't know his surname!

Dench was a better full back.

Exactly. There were many great Fullbacks including Southby at Carlton. But because Silvagni was a media darling they put him into the team of the century.

At least Southby was a Bendigo boy!

Actually Southby would be close to the best player ever out of Bendigo and there have been some great players out of the Go. Jake Stringer and Tory Dickson (and Nathan Brown I suppose) included.

I'm thinking Jack Viney must now be the greatest player ever. Doesn't he have a father that could smash Boris Becker hands down on a tennis court.

Jab was amazing when he was getting 1,000 injections in his arse every month. He was a plodder before that and after that.

The thought of 1000 jabs a month in my arse would focus my mind too.

Haven't seen a lot of Jack but what i have seen i've been very impressed with. He isn't big or quick but the kids got great footy smarts. He will be a player this kid.

Steve Silvagni: fullback of the century has always miffed me.

I actually knew Silvagni. Dull bloke, only knew him
Professionally via his day job at the time, but having an acquaintance with him, I took an interest. Therefore this stands out in my mind:

In Round 1, 1994, Carlton (beaten Grand Finalist in 1993, who would finish top in 1994, before winning the flag in 1995... Point is, a very, very strong side) were hosted by Adelaide at Football Park.

Silvagni lined up at fullback on Tony Modra. Modra went on to kick 13 of Adelaide's 22 goals against the apparent fullback of the century.... At least a large chunk of them until Silvagni was moved away from the fullback position.

Couldn't really imagine Dench or Southby EVER being moved away from a dominant full forward. It really stuck in my mind.

Therefore seeing him named "Fullback of the Century" only two years later really raised my eyebrows. It just didn't seem to wash, for mine. Couldn't help but feel someone on the selection committee must've had a crush on SOS!

I always considered Southby to be a better full back than Silvagni even allowing for the fact that Templeton kicked 9 goals against Southby in a brilliant display of high marking at the Western Oval on one occasion in a brilliant display.

Southby also suffered serious bouts of depression during his career

I think Southbys daughter Should be lauded more than Jack . She has made a name for herself in her own right.
