Final game of the 2017 home and away season hopefully not the last one and we can play in the finals if all goes our way.

Will next year in the game day threads include the venue as well like I have with this thread.

Margin: Dogs by 4 points to keep our 2017 finals dream alive

First Goal: Bailey Dale to get our first and kick 5

Best On Ground: Jack Macrae to tear it up again

Why our defenders stand 10-15m in front of their opponents is beyond me.

Because we appointed Joe Bloggs as the defensive coach at the start of the year.

It's the big flaw in a zone defence. Opponents go and stand in other places.

It's quite funny how last year we were kings of out the back run on goals now every club does it to us with ease.
We don't have any plan to beat our own game when it's used against us.

Must say The Bont is killing it but no mention from the bias Hawk commentators to busy talking about Mitchell.
Lipinski getting a feel , quite a good first qtr from him.

25-08-2017, 09:27 PM
Bailey Dale has improved a lot this year. The next area he needs to improve on is collecting the ball below his knees. He's too fumbly and for his role he can't be.
Feel for Lewy, he's getting a lesson these past 4 weeks due to how our defensive set-up is exposed when we fail to stop quick ball movement from the opposition out of our forward line.
His first two games he was going for marks and impacting marking contests defensively. At the moment he looks bereft of confidence in every contest.

Apart from that we just let them run it round the wing, I know their are zones but not 30 metres from a player with the ball and the one receiving.

So far this game is just the perfect summary of our season, frustrating to watch because we just let 'just ok' teams find a way to get easy goals, whilst at the same time we find ways to self-sabotage our own opportunities to score as well as just fail to capitalise on periods of possession and field position dominance.

Lewis Young is a talent with a big future hopefully for our team but I'm not sure why he's been playing after he looked way off in the GWS game. Tonight it was almost like we were hiding him up forward in the second half not sure he touched it ? Tough season, hard to reconcile the drop off in intensity and manic pressure which was the hallmark of the side last season. Let's hope 2018 we can rediscover that spark. Thanks Bob and Boydy for all your efforts, legends.

Let's all put in and buy the midfield and forward coach a mobile phone number next year so they can contact each other.
Our forward leading patterns are just not existent . Compared to the hawks who seem Composed have a structure and some useful marks. He'll even schoemakers can take a forward leading mark . Young was smoothered at full foward tongiht

So many chances to kick goals but disposal was just pathetic. Running into open goals and spraying he ball.

I have no problem with our effort tonight......we just weren't smart enough. Some have mentioned it was a bit like the McCartney days.....multiple players running at the Hawks player with the ball only to see it released to someone else on the outside......time and time again. It goes a long way to explain the disparity in tackles. It seems like we were corralling rather than tackling but I think it was more to do with us having too many players committing to the ball carrier instead of manning up on the outliers.

Happy to wipe that season.

Name five bulldogs players who can consistently take an overhead mark in a contested situation? I struggle.

A mystery to me is Cloke being basically rested after his best game of the year. It was our most important game of the season and we appeared to be using a game plan which requires a tall forward and we had a small setup. Bizarre . Bont and Libba both look like they've got the worst OP ever too can barely run.

The lack of skill has been evident all year. The effort was there but we went into the game without two recognised key forwards and one key back man. The highlight for me was the final game of Matthew Boyd who with 33 possessions was outstanding in a defence that struggled throughout. As expected Hawthorn's disposal was far superior and a major factor in the win. They also had the best forward on the ground in Roughead which proved to be the difference.

Well, I've just read this entire thread and the pain, disappointment, frustration and yes, anger, that I am hearing mirrors my own sentiments exactly. I am just so hlad this year is over. I cannot recall a year as frustrating as this. The highpoint was the win against the Swans. It was basically downhill from there.

If stats were kept for fumbles, inept handballs, misdirected taps, missed tackles and missed goals at cricial moments in games we would be No 1 on tonight's performance.

Really disappointing. I feel gutted for Murph and Boydy who played their guts out. It was just so frustrating to see the effort applied wasted due to poor execution by hand or foot.

I worry about our prospects next year to be honest. We need Stringer, Bont, Libba, Crameri, Adams, Tom Boyd, Clokey, Easton Wood and a few others to have really good years and be injury free. If not we will be back with the pack. In other words - a fair middling team.

I really felt 2016 was going to be a watershed year for us. I could not have been more wrong.

There needs to be a thorough inquest into our season. Only the 2nd time for 19 years that the Premiers have not made the 8 the following year. That deserves serious, honest, appraisal.

Excellent point. Big blokes are supposed to take marks. Tom Campbell and Roughie between them - my gut feeling is they didn't snag half a dozen between them.

Tom Campbell has been a punt that has ultimately not come off. He has attributes that are good, and others that needed much improvement... He has not, at AFL level anyway, been able to improve those deficiencies in any significant way to make me think he's an AFL level player.

So far this game is just the perfect summary of our season, frustrating to watch because we just let 'just ok' teams find a way to get easy goals, whilst at the same time we find ways to self-sabotage our own opportunities to score as well as just fail to capitalise on periods of possession and field position dominance.

Last year we were really hard to score against and stayed in games during patches when we weren't playing well and didn't get blown away. This year though teams would score easy goals after we expended all our energy doing everything but kick goals. It's like other teams Rope a Doped us.

Well that is 2017 all over and in the end we could be better in the long run.

On the game tonight very frustrating again we were close for most of the night but just could not get the lead.

Players I thought did well Bob and Boydy put a top effort in their last games, Toby McLean, Bont, Campbell tried hard, Dahl, Daniel did alright, Zaine Cordy and Bailey Dale is our a reliable forward now.

There has certainly been quite a few improvers this year but more have gone back. If more can lift there games next year will be alright again. We didn't lie down tonight and kept fighting hard which was a positive aspect and looking over the season yes there were games we lost badly which took a hit to our % but there were other games were we easily could have won and it would have been a different story.

Our forward efficiency needs a major review over the off season along with our goal kicking.

Farwell to Bob Murphy and Matty Boyd. Bulldog legends.

Will be back in 2018!

I wonder if the Bont has been carrying some major niggle this year as this is his worst year for disposal.

Has to be. Just has to be.

Bont clearly carrying something, had his hip/groin worked on vigorously at 3QTR time and looked quite proppy most of the night.

Thanks to Boydy and Bob - certainly going to miss them representing us but both were instrumental in our flag last year and are forever legends of this club.

Plenty of work to do this off season.

Sad night to farewell a couple of blokes who have seemingly been around forever.

Summed up our year tonight, we've got a long pre-season now to implement change and come back fitter and stronger than last year. Hope we can do that.

He didnt come up with the 6 day break. I am sure Bevo wanted him to play. Campbell, although had 25 hitouts, he only touched the ball 3 times and was useless up forward when it was his turn.

A Bevo said in his press conference, we were well beaten in the big man department.

I felt his running style all year was a bit strange. He did hurt his hip in the prelim, so he may have aggravated again this year.

I'd argue Campbell's demonstrated himself to be exactly what we've seen, and that's his ceiling.

His development's been incremental at best and even as a basic depth player he's been found wanting. He's Minson-lite and frankly incompatible with both the modern game, and Bevo's game. Time to move on.

I was hugely disappointed in Campbell tonight. I'd said earlier that he had his best footy ahead of him. Well I'm wrong. I don'' think he can be a No 1 ruckman

Following his preseason injury, he just hasn't come up as fit as he would have liked to be.

It is hard to believe that we continued to play Suckling throughout the season at the expense of a Club champion in Matthew Boyd.

Boyd was battling an Achilles injury and we saw what that did to Johnno.
You might get one good one and then a couple of bad.
I'm not a fan of Suckling BTW.
