Great local footy story, especially the one armed playing coach

If you think things are bad, then this team puts things into perspective

I saw that on TV. Loved the attitude of the one armed captain coach.

The Eagles are a good, honest local club.

They've struggled for a long time but have never dropped their heads about being the 'poorer cousin' in town.

Ararat Rats play in the Wimmera League, Eagles play in the Mininera and District League, which is a considerably weaker league.

When I was working up that way one of the publicans told me that there were nights where the coach and/or president were doing the rounds of the pubs to see who could play for the Eagles the next day.

I understand that can be pretty common with country teams, especially toward the end of the season or when the fruit isn't ripe yet so nobody is in town picking it or its term break and half the team have gone on holidays or home to see Mater and Pater or a Defence exercise interstate for a club near an army base-all sorts of things impact on availability.

Heh! The rats.

Just watched the video, hadn't had a chance as yet.

Almost makes me want to move back and actually play for a club for the first time in my life.

'Nats' is a fine fellow. Got a rough exterior but a heart of gold. When we wanted to play a community rugby league game at Alexandra Oval a few years ago he couldn't offer up the Eagles Clubhouse fast enough.

The two clubs have separate social rooms, needless to say the Eagles room is somewhat more spartan.

Sounds like rockbank, they always have a sign on the Ballarat rd asking for players.
The signs had its share of years as well looking old and tattered.
With the populating about to explode in that area it won't be long before they become a team to be reckoned with though.

Like Avondale Heights in juniors when we were kids. Remember they had a few underage teams that were really bad in the mid 70s then they became a huge club.

Yep. Caroline Springs didn't exist 25 years ago and they are in Div 1 of the Western Region League these days.

Only because Wyndhamvale are horrid.
But yeah expect the Burnside bears to start the climb as well in the next few years,
My old club that started in 1999 Sydenham/hillside are moving up and they have their first player to be drafted this year in Cameron Rayner. Nice start he looks like going number 1 as well.
I'm told quite a few of them are playing at the western jets now so it could be a very good football farm between the deer park and Melton corridor in the near future.
The club should scream to go back to zoning the way it's taking off around the outer western suburbs.
