View Full Version : Ed Richards on the fast track to somewhere special as Doggies cherish recruits quick progress

IF JAKE Stringer was still a Western Bulldog, Ed Richards would be dazzling as a star of the future elsewhere.

If Richards wasn’t 45 minutes late to a pre-draft interview at Carlton, he might’ve been a Blue.

In last year’s frantic countdown to the 2pm trade deadline, the Bulldogs struck three separate deals as nine draft picks flipped around.
The wash-up for the Dogs was this; in came pick 16 (Richards) and Josh Schache and out went Stringer and two second-round draft selections.

They appear win-win-wins.

The Blues ended up with a selection to satisfy GWS for Matthew Kennedy, Brisbane was well compensated for Schache and Essendon eventually got its man in Stringer.

But in Richards, the Bulldogs appear to have a beauty.

“There’s something special about him,” fellow Red Head Cameron Ling said on Friday night.

Wayne Carey said Richards was “100 per cent” in the conversation to win the Rising Star and teammate Jason Johannisen praised the speed and power he plays with.

On Friday night Richards was the No. 1 ranked player in the final quarter, kicking two clever goals against Geelong and applying a defensive spoil that led to the Dogs’ last major. Each of Richards’ three goals put the Dogs in front.

“He’s made some big steps in a very short period of time,” coach Luke Beveridge said afterwards.
The Dogs ranked Aaron Naughton at No. 6 in last year’s draft and Richards at No. 7 and they got both — at picks nine and 16 respectively.

For any Bulldog supporter who felt heartache as premiership star Stringer was kicked out, Richards — who has re-signed until 2020 — eases the burn.

The Stringer trade was driven by coach Luke Beveridge and so much of it hinged on nailing pick 16.
Recruiter Simon Dalrymple, who has since joined Sydney, was “concerned” at who would be left.

“I was pessimistic (on Richards) because there were so many suitors between 10 and 15,” Dalrymple said on draft night.

“He was our next ranked player after Aaron.”
Driving from Glen Iris to the Blues to meet coach Brendon Bolton and list boss Stephen Silvagni, Richards was stuck in a traffic jam that helped them settle on Lochie O’Brien at pick 10.

If Richards was gone the Dogs would’ve tossed up Charlie Ballard (Gold Coast, pick 42) or Jack Higgins (Richmond, pick 17).
Right now, there aren’t many players from last year’s draft you would take ahead of Richards.

Similarly to Marcus Bontempelli, the Dogs loved Richards’ scope for improvement as a late developer.

The Carey Grammar boy was shorter than 160cm in under-15s, before growing 30cm in two years and shooting up draft boards.
He has balance, poise and pace and that’s a fair package to receive after losing Stringer.

We rated Richards a little higher than most others (correctly at this stage), but we rated Ballard way higher than everybody else. Maybe we can pick him up on the cheap in the coming years after Gold Coast have stalled his development.

So we got Richards and Schache for Stringer ?
If so I think we got the win on that front easily.
Yeah Jake has X factor but for effort and upside we have definitley got a better deal.

Dogs:

Out: Stringer for 25 & 30
Out: Picks 28 & 30
Out: Picks 25 & 40
Out: Pick 23 (2018)

In: Schache
In: Pick 16 (Richards)

So we traded Stringer, picks 25, 28, 30 40 & 2018 Pick 23 (5 picks from 23 to 40) - for - Schache (pick 2, first round drafted) & Richards (pick 16, first round drafted) - Another way to say is we traded 5 mid range picks, for two kids we rated top 7 in their draft years.

Not wanting to be pedantic, but just trying to clarify.

Out went Stringer plus picks 28 and 40 plus 2018 pick 2 (currently 23, but will be watered down by the Academy/Father Son/free agent Compo picks.

In Pick 16 (Richards), Josh Schache.

In hindsight we would be ecstatic to get Richards for 28, 40 and probably the 2018 2nd rounder.

That gives us Schache for Stringer and I am happy with that.

We eventually got Crozier who we rated, so we'll only have to wait.
GCS listed means he's 50/50 to want to come back at some stage.

I think Crozier is a huge get.
We had another good draft and trade no doubt.

So from last years draft

Naughton pick 9 - round 1
Ed - pick 16 - round 1
Schache - former pick 2 - round 1
Croazier - former pick 20, considered round 1 that year.

Out Stringer former pick 5 round 1

Yeah potato, potato. The end of the story ends us up with two kids rated top 7 draftees by the club, and a culture cancer vanquished. That's a nice ending considering I'm happy now, and both have a huuuuuuge amount of talent to continue to build their careers on.

Then not much for Crozier and Gowers in the rookie draft, plus Naughton, and last year is looking like a good off season's work.

Were some of us knocking the club for saying that we got our hands on the lads we rated at 6 and 7 in the draft?

Yes. And to be fair it is a rather hard statement to swallow at face value. However seeing Richards now it's not hard at all to imagine that he'd be our next picked after Naughton. If anything you could make a case that their order should have been swapped (but you wouldn't because then we maybe miss out on Naughton)

(I was just about to mention how much more believable this statement was before seeing your post too)

I wish we could win one. Just one trade week win. We lost bigly last year, and I mean that Tom Boyd trade year killed our chances of a premiership during his mega contract. :D

If only Robbo openly barracked for us and everything we do, including any really bad stuff...

Moreso that they ranked Callum Porter next
