Match preview: Melbourne v Western Bulldogs
Ben Guthrie
Jul 9, 2018 4:45PM

SUMMARY
Melbourne won its sixth straight game when it toppled the Western Bulldogs by 49 points when the teams met in round 11. At that stage of the year, the Demons were being discussed as legitimate premiership contenders and things were going swimmingly. Despite a comfortable victory over the Dockers in Darwin last week, there are major question marks over Melbourne's finals credentials with Simon Goodwin's side dropping three of its past four games. The injury-depleted Bulldogs are a dangerous team on their day – as they showed when they defeated Geelong in round 15 – but the year is catching up with them and finals are almost certainly out of the question (although Luke Beveridge's side is still mathematically a chance to feature in September). Melbourne has everything to play for as it tries to lock down a spot in the top eight.

WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Saturday, July 14, 4.35pm AEST
TV AND RADIO: Click here for broadcast guide

LAST FIVE MEETINGS
R11, 2018, Melbourne 15.10 (100) d Western Bulldogs 7.9 (51) at Etihad Stadium
R13, 2017, Melbourne 17.11 (113) d Western Bulldogs 8.8 (56) at Etihad Stadium
R8, 2016, Western Bulldogs 17.12 (114) d Melbourne 12.10 (82) at the MCG
R20, 2015, Western Bulldogs 24.9 (153) d Melbourne 8.7 (55) at Etihad Stadium
R8, 2015, Melbourne 15.13 (103) d Western Bulldogs 9.10 (64) at the MCG

THE SIX POINTS

1. The Demons are the highest-ranked team for contested possessions averaging 162.5 per game. They are a long way ahead of the Bulldogs, who are in 14th with an average of 140.7.

2. Melbourne has won its past two clashes between the sides, ending the Bulldogs' dominance of five wins from six games in 2013-16. The Demons haven't won three in a row over the Dogs since 2004-05.

3. The Demons are ranked first in the AFL for scoring, kicking an average score of 104 points. The Bulldogs are ranked 15th with an average score of 71 points.

4. This is the Bulldogs' first game at the MCG in 2018 with the team winning its past six games at the venue – a club record.

5. Jesse Hogan and Tom McDonald kicked nine goals between them when Melbourne defeated the Western Bulldogs by 49 points in round 11.

6. Melbourne co-captain Jack Viney averaged 18.3 Schick AFL Player Ratings points between rounds 13 and 16, ranked equal-fifth in competition.

IT’S A BIG WEEK FOR …
Jeff Garlett. The Melbourne goal sneak will be looking to keep his spot in the side after making his return against the Dockers. Garlett, who had not played since round five, gathered 14 disposals, laid six tackles and kicked a goal against Fremantle. At his best, his forward pressure and ability to snag a major when needed is vitally important for the Demons.

PREDICTION: Melbourne by 17 points

It almost looked a couple of times that lynch was pitted against hogan. I hope that was a glitch.

Once again more inside 50’s. A big disappointed with some of Richards decisions...thought he had a few opportunities to kick a goal but chose a dodgy kick to bad options where he should’ve just ran straight at the goals and let go.

I wonder what Biggs disposal efficiency is?

Don’t like to harp on about the umpires but gees they are red hot on us tonight. No prior. A legitimate attempt at the ball gives Hogan more charity and Bradshaw pull his kick because he see Doggies down the line and it not deliberate then a little five with the umpire. Give me a break

Here's s tactic to consider: play a extra man or two in defence and just give away a deliberate free kick at centre bounces. I'm sure we would be able to defend that better than just allowing our opponents to waltz the ball out of the centre time after time. Tom Campbell - anyone?

Are we just not fit enough to run our games?

I am sure that is part of our problem. Our second halves have been so poor. But there are plenty of other issues. A couple of years back I saw Tom Campbell and Tom Boyd blanket Max Gawn when he had been in top form. Why wasn't Campbell selected?
At times we seemed to have no game plan at all when coming out of defence. We are static to the max. We take a mark down back and spend the next 5-10 seconds looking for someone to kick to. There isn't anyone so we kick it to a contest and turn it over!
Our field kicking is just awful. In the 2nd half we rarely kicked to our advantage today. But I don't just blame the kicker. Often I see the receiver failing to lead up to the kicker thus making an uncontested possession more of a certainty.
Allowing a team to kick 8 goals in 15 minutes is a new nadir for us this year. I don't think we can get any worse so I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.

Eastdog

Dissapointing in the end but there are a lot of positives to take out. Very good 1st half. Schache is going to be a good player up forward. JJ, Wallis, Macrae, Dunkley, Hunter very good. Dale Morris as solid as ever. Brad Lynch made a few mistakes but has some good moments.

2nd half poor but not as terrible as the 2nd half last week I reckon.

A dissapointing turnout from our supporters but the timeslots and the fact we aren't doing great probably played a role.

Now onto next week against the Eagles over in Perth.

For the very few of us there, I can’t inagine even Ballarat will be colder, but we will soon find out.

My observations:
Hunter, not always a fan favourite, keeps growing as a player. You could hear his voice too. In a miserable year, we’ve probably forgotten his consistency. Works very hard to get back and help the defence.

Ed looks tired, struggled to get involved, unusually for him chose a couple of poor options.

Jack Macrae is a complete star.

Roughie - it is sad.

Schache is a great acquisition. Watch out for him next year. A natural forward.

I think the Q3 efforts are about lack of depth in the midfield, esp when the opposition mids get an armchair ride from their ruck. Our ‘rucks don’t matter’ approach keeps killing us. I’m praying Tim English comes on, quickly.

Melbourne supporters could whinge for England. Melbourne players have a cockiness that they haven’t deserved. They are front runners and unfortunately we gave them that opportunity to do what they do best.

Did I mention it was COLD?

So. Why so much love and sentiment for clay smith whilst Roughy just cops the pineapple?

He looks like he isn’t trying...I understand - but shouldn’t we just acknowledge what we see in front of us? He is cooked (or needs a ‘real break’ for a few months to get himself right) and it is because of being heavily raced and copping numerous injuries playing footy for our club. I’m not saying we shouldn’t appreciate smith - we should - just that knee recons are not the only injury in the world and sometimes fighting through so called niggles and still taking the field has an huge long term impact.

Roughy will always be a premiership hero. In terms of his future as a top tier ruckman though, I worry for him. I certainly don't wish him ill will for his form drop-off, but from a purely objective list management perspective he is simily not playing himself into a new contract at the kennel. By contrast Wally, who also had the heat put on him by the coach, has been fantastic in his application and endeavour to adapt to an unfamiliar role.

Roughy just doesn't have a body that can cope with the physicality of footy. He's a premiership hero and seems like a cracking bloke but his time is almost up as a footballer. I assume that he's planning on moving into coaching since he was heavily involved in our AFLW side so I think that's the best thing for him.

Are we just not fit enough to run our games?

In the third quarter the most inexperienced players didn't touch the ball.

In the third quarter when Melbourne won three centre clearances in a row through great tap work, Roughy didn't even bother jumping for the tap out. It was disgraceful. For god sakes, yeah, your opponent is tall, but at least try and run into him, do something.

The other area of his game, ie around the ground, he was always under the bal, he couldn't judge the flight. Very frustrating to watch him. As for the shot at goal, woeful to say the list.

Both Roughead and Campbell had clearly been left in the VFL for far to long with Roughy running out of steam after half time against the best ruck man in the League in Gawn. Campbell is our best tap ruck man and should be selected against WCE. Against the tall high marking Melbourne we simply played in to their hands by our inability to hit players on the chest due to shoddy disposal as you have described. We need however to look at the few positives to come out of the game. Hunter was terrific in his best game for the year. Macrae and McLean continue to enjoy fine seasons. Wallis again showed by his determination with 3 goals that his services are still required. The duel between Dunkley and Oliver was a highlight. A great effort by Dunkley to finish with 30 disposals against the talented Oliver who was again very good and ranks alongside Gawn as the Dees two best players. A word of praise also for Naughton who continues to impress.
Schache again showed promise and maybe just the key forward that we have been so desperate to find for a long time.

We desperately need a quality ruck who will win the hitouts putting it to our advantage and try and get it to Schache more often up forward. Tom Boyd when he comes back needs to play forward - that's why we got him not to play him mostly in the ruck. We were utterly destroyed in the 3rd quarter in this area. We really just need to consistently play 4 quarters. At the half time break will were doing quite good. In the first quarter we may have just been on top of them.

We need to get a jarrod witts or ben McEvoy type player who were behind their clubs number. 1 Ruck at the time
Witts was going nowhere because bucks was trying to turn him into a foward ruck. He had 29 hitouts same as bellchamber yesterday vs essendon . Witts not dominate but at least provides a contest .
McEvoy was cunning Recuriting by hawks as he was behind longer and hickey at the time . McEvoy is probably ahead of both of them , and is a way better mark than both. It’s easy talk in hindsight but hawks saw the GAP if ceglar went down.

It’s crazy to think that mckernan is having a half decent season atm . Not a pure duck but provides contest and chopout

We have the best young ruck on the list-English. I wouldnt be spending any $$$ on a ruck.

Boyd cant play forward because he cant mark. His body and hand position in marking contests is as bad as you will see.

Yeah in terms of the ruck I forget English another who has shown a lot this season and will hopefully come good in the future. What role then does Tom Boyd play? He took some excellent marks in the grand final Boydy.

Biggs didn't touch the ball in the 3rd quarter. Bevo threw him back as a spare after the first three onslaught by melbourne, but he was nil value. Not sure what has happened to him over the past two years.

Playing for his career why on earth would you wear long sleeves twice in a row?

I don’t rate him and I certainly don’t rate his disposal. His field kicking and goal kicking is up there with Dahl, and with lynch, smith, Williams, Richards, wood etc, we don’t need him. He’s also rumoured to be one of the party boys and I want that cancer cut out of our team immediately.
