Four things to watch: Carlton v Western Bulldogs
Troy Daniel
17 August 2018 6:00 AM

westernbulldogs.com.au looks at four hot topics ahead of Sunday’s clash with Carlton at Etihad Stadium.

History awaits

The Dogs will not only be shooting for five straight wins over the Blues when the two sides cross swords on Sunday afternoon, but a win will call for a minor re-writing of the record book: the Dogs having never beaten the ‘baggers more than four times on the trot since their first match back in July 1925 (we lost that one by 13 points for what it’s worth).

In fact, you’d have to go back to the mid-eighties for the last time they got close, between round 21, 1984 and round 9, 1986. The next time the two sides met didn’t go so well, the Blues handing out a 79-point lashing at Waverley Park.

It was the first time the two sides had battled out that way since 1981 and ended up being the last clash between the pair at the old VFL Park.

Probably a good thing.

-

Bulls on Parade

Broadcast legend Bruce McAvaney is prone to the odd burst of hyperbole, and he was particularly colourful the last time the Marcus Bontempelli and Carlton bull Patrick Cripps stood side by side in round 6 this season.

Cripps was dominant in the first term, picking up 10 disposals and five clearances, before Luke Beveridge sent Lin Jong and Bontempelli to curb the Carlton star. Bont then got busy himself, reeling off 11 touches, two inside 50s and two score involvements to help send the Dogs into the main break 23 points up.

It prompted this outburst from Macca: “The two young stars, the two young champs. Don’t you love it.”

Yeah, we do. Good for Dogs fans, good for Blues fans and good for the ‘state of the game’. It’s not often you see really good players go one on one all day but here’s hoping we see it at least for a bit on Sunday.

-

The Men’s Department

Despite some complications, Caleb Daniel is not only equipped with a fresh new haircut, he’s also in his best form of the season, last week racking up a career-high 40 touches.

It’s been partly instigated by a change in role, with CD spending more time in defence, or the ‘men’s department’ as it’s also known, and using his footy smarts and superior ball use to quarterback the Dogs’ drive out of defence. When he’s good, he’s very good, Caleb, and the Dogs are a better team when the former #46 pick is finding the footy.

It's a good excuse to roll out these highlights again. Daniel came on as the sub (remember them?) back in round 14, 2015 and had a debut to remember against the Blues.

14 disposals, five marks and one goal later, a cult hero, and genuine Bulldog weapon, was born.

-

Clearance Kings?

Now, while 10th v 14th in the second to last round might not scream appointment TV, even neutrals should pencil this one in, especially if you enjoy yourself some midfield craft.

It’s a bit of a cliché, but this one really should be won or lost in the engine room and the Blues, led by Cripps, are pretty good out of the middle.

Get this, who is the third-best centre clearance team in the competition? That’s right, it’s Carlton. The Dogs are 10th.

Cripps is a beast, but Zac Fisher is pretty good too and if the Dogs are to get the points they’ll need to win this battle. Stats, though, don’t always tell the full story and as Luke Beveridge said here, the Dogs’ midfield has looked formidable in recent times, so as Ed Richards’ great uncle Lou used to say, we could be in for a ring-a-ding-ding battle this weekend.

Is it Sunday yet?

Match preview: Carlton v Western Bulldogs
Riley Beveridge
Aug 13, 2018 1:46PM

SUMMARY
After a year to forget, the Western Bulldogs appear to have found their mojo. Now, Luke Beveridge's side will be hoping for its third straight victory when it meets Carlton at Etihad Stadium. The Dogs have displayed plenty of character in their back-to-back wins, overturning significant deficits on both occasions. Marcus Bontempelli has played a key role in both victories and will renew acquaintances with Patrick Cripps on Sunday in a battle of the game's best young midfielders. However, with Lachie Hunter, Jack Macrae and Caleb Daniel all racking up more than 40 disposals each last week, expect Bontempelli to have more support around the ball than his Carlton counterpart. Josh Dunkley is improving with each match, Jason Johannisen is providing plenty of run from half-back and Josh Schache is starting to find his feet at AFL level. Their recent productivity should lead to a comfortable Dogs win.

WHERE AND WHEN: Etihad Stadium, Sunday, August 19, 1.10pm AEST
TV AND RADIO: Click here for broadcast guide

LAST FIVE TIMES
R6, 2018: Western Bulldogs 11.14 (80) d Carlton 8.11 (59) at Etihad Stadium
R17, 2017: Western Bulldogs 12.10 (82) d Carlton 9.8 (62) at the MCG
R4, 2016: Western Bulldogs 13.7 (85) d Carlton 7.7 (49) at Etihad Stadium
R14, 2015: Western Bulldogs 9.10 (64) d Carlton 7.11 (53) at Etihad Stadium
R5, 2014: Carlton 18.11 (119) d Western Bulldogs 13.13 (91) at Etihad Stadium

THE SIX POINTS
1. The Bulldogs were too strong in almost every major category against the Blues earlier this season, winning the disposal count, tackles, marks, inside 50s and clearances.

2. The Bulldogs have dominated the Blues recently, winning seven of their last nine meetings. There have been some close finishes, with four games decided by fewer than four goals.

3. The two teams have played 14 times at Etihad Stadium, with the Bulldogs holding a clear 9-5 advantage. Carlton is 0-6 at Etihad Stadium this season.

4. In the last two weeks, the Bulldogs have dominated their opponents in the third quarter to kick a combined 16.8 (104) to 2.10 (22).

5. The Blues rank either last or second-last in scoring, disposals, uncontested possessions, inside 50s and marks inside 50 so far this season.

6. Dogs pair Jack Macrae (No.33) and Lachie Hunter (No.93) are having brilliant seasons and have both moved into career-best rankings, according to the Schick AFL Player Ratings.

IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR…

It's been a big couple of weeks for Marcus Bontempelli. After kicking four goals in a quarter to engineer a victory over St Kilda a fortnight ago, the classy midfielder won 35 disposals to go with another two goals against North Melbourne on Sunday. He'll go toe-to-toe with Patrick Cripps this weekend in what is set to be a pivotal individual battle.

That was just dreadful. An extremely unsatisfying win. We didn’t even romp away with a few cheapie goals once the result was certain.

We have so many appalling kicks. It was hard to watch.

I don’t know how many Woofers were there but sitting in the nosebleed section it was apparent that our work ethic was terrible. No leads, no overlap, no hard running, a ‘Leave it to someone else’ attitude across the board.

At final siren I’ve never seen a flatter reaction than from our guys and rightly so. I know it’s hard to get motivated for these matches but their lethargy and sloppiness today was pretty ordinary.

Awful game of footy, but happy to win. Will never watch or think about his game ever again though.

Disappointing to see so many punters put the boots into the Bont for an apparent dive when he was play nched in the back? People are deluding themselves. Think it's a reaction to the public convincing themselves that Cripps was "daylight" ahead of Bont and having that shown up fairly emphatically today.

I must be the only one that thought Bont was pretty poor today. Yeah, he got a ton of the ball and he was clean when under pressure by hand but he burnt it by foot more often than not.

Definitely not close to 100% so being able to play out the game and accumulate so much of the ball is a feather in his cap but I don’t think he hurt the Blues as much as he should have.

For those of us old enough to rememember his old man Terry (and everyone else), what did you think of Tom DeKoning's first game today? I thought he showed some good footy smarts and has a great ability to get in front in marking contests. I really enjoyed him and Naughton going at a few times man on man. DeKoning got Naughton the first time but Naughton made sure he won or halved the next few contests.

Carlton may have got a decent player in Tom.

Can't be easy playing forward for Carlton so DeKoning did well.

I was at the game and the movement of our forwards was non-existent. Carlton just folded back with extra numbers as they always do, and there weren't many options for the mids (who were dominating) to kick to. A bit of a mixture of the inexperience of the group, and the lack of a genuine marking target.

I think there is a tendency to jump to 'poor delivery' and 'poor ball use' - and while that can be right sometimes, I would say the lack of movement and lack of cohesion of our forwards is a far bigger problem.

The other issue is that at times our players try to be 'too perfect' and rather than take a snap at goal, they go for one more handball to the player with the 'easier shot' - who then gets closed down so its another handball and another handball until we fluff it.

There was one where Gowers should have snapped, hesitated, handballed and the moment was gone. Same with Richards, who was racing in towards goal and got within 40 metres but decided to pass it, but fluffed it. He should have had a shot, he is a beautiful kick of the ball.

It was frustrating watching the ball being bombed in, similar to the first half against North. Scacche, needs to bulk up a bit and attack the ball more in the air.

The Jack Macrae special.

Yep agree with all of that. I guess the reality is that our main forwards yesterday included a 20 year old Schache, 21 year old Gowers, and then a mix of Greene & Lipinski in their infancy as AFL players, and Dicko not having a great day second up from a spell and battling with a congested forward line.

We were younger and less experienced than Carlton yesterday.

Hit the nail on the head, the congested forward line did not help all those players

One particularly good bit of commentary:

"That's an unbelievable effort. From Bontempelli. If that doesn't get you off your couch at home, nothing will. What a goal!"

The Jack Macrae special.

If you give Jack the option of an open goal inside 50 or a handball to a teammate, you know he's taking the handball 9 times out of 10.

He's the anti-Stringer in just about every single way.

Agree on the young forward line when you add Lynch in who is both raw in terms of games played and forward line experience, but the age & games played figures whilst in our favour are a little misleading as Carlton had more under 50 & 100 games, but had a few more at the higher end (Simpson, Murphy & Thomas) which gave us a slight edge.

I forgot Lynch....easily forgettable yesterday with no influence.

Yeah fair call that there are elements misleading about the age/games played stats - but in any case, we are talking about 2 very inexperienced sides and I think most of the commentators and general footy watcher wouldn't expect that the two teams are so similar in overall profile.

He didn't make my votes today as he was very wasteful.

It’s funny, I felt similarly about Macrae. I thought his foot skills were really poor, but then I’m not sure there were many guys who used it well

Just watched the official highlights on the AFL app and it has to be the most hilariously lame highlights package of all time. It included such memorable moments as Lin Jong copping a few heavy knocks, a decent passage of play from Carlton that led to Harry McKay taking a simple chest mark near the boundary & finally Caleb Daniel laying a tackle and being awarded a free kick as the siren sounded.

Don't know why they'd leave out Naughton's floater across the face of goal that was intercepted. Champagne footy.

and very few Doggies goals.

The AFEL is getting on my nerves at the moment, I am getting really sick and tired of their blatant antics.

Compelling stuff. It's a shame they couldn't fit the bit when Cripps (I think) got hit in the nads with the footy.

I don't think he got it in the plums. I think Naughton's knee got him in the midriff.

I saw the aftermath and worked backwards with most likely.
